Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Hello Colombia
Hello Colombia
My first Cervesa to christen my Colombian adventure
Goddamn, I knew I should have learned more Spanish. I am sitting here in El Dorado Airport and they hardly speak a lick of English. How cool a name is El Dorado for any airport by the way. It makes me think of Conquistadors and lost cities of gold. When I got off the plane there were zero signs in English, not even one word. The customs form was entirely in Spanish. I just guessed that the correct answer to most of the security questions was no and hoped I wouldn’t be sequestered away for mistakenly admitting to bringing in narcotics. [View Full Entry]

I met quite an interesting guy the other day. He was all about " en Colombia todo se puede" and when I asked him to be more specific he told me... Colombia has the best US dollars! The best US dollars? Yeah, that's what he said! the best counterfeit ones! Also the best counterfeit Euros, they seem genuine, it´s a real pain in the but to tell if they are fake or the real thing! Also it looks like the Pope's bullet- proof car is made here because they have in Colombia the best technology to make bullet-proof items! Imagine! Of [View Full Entry]

Back at altitude with attitude again but I must be getting acclimatised. Great Bogota. Home to Bolivar’s greatest and lowest moments and still alive with a sense of history, passionate, proud and over populated with beggars. A little scene setting, this morning I took off the damaged panier, you might remember from the dog crash ep, I took it over the road to a small ferreteria (hardware) and told them I needed to fix it….did they have drill, hinges, rivets etc, within 5 mins the boy, the boss and 2 passing bike riders had accumulated tools, bits and pieces, sent the [View Full Entry]

Popayán is sold as the white city and again as one of the most beautiful cities in Colombian (I gave up counting how many most beautiful cities they have here). To cut a long story short I didn’t like it that much. It has a lot of old buildings which are mainly white and the usual thousand churches but I’ve seen better in Columbia. Spent only one day here so there is not much more to say about it. One nice thing about stopping over in Popayán was that I could go to the Tuesday market in Silvia which lays [View Full Entry]

Well I've been back for a week now but thought I'd put some more pictures up. I would have done it earlier but the computers were soo slow in Colombia and I didn't have much time to spend in the internet cafes. Better late than never though. Cartagena was ok but a little dissapointing. After having spent the previous 2 weeks traveling through Colombia and meeting only a small amount of tourists, Cartagena was a bit of shock. This is beacause many cruise ships stop off at Cartagena and loads and loads of package deal tourists spill into the streets. This [View Full Entry]

With less than 2 months remaining on my trip, it is time for me to start thinking about where I’m going to live, where I’m going to work, where I’m going to back to school, and how the hell am I supposed to afford any of it. When sitting on the beautiful Playa Blanca near Cartagena, it struck me as to what my calling in life is… to be a model! In other words, watch your ass Marcus Schenkenberg! After a few months of daily body waxes, hours in the gym, a diet of nothing but bananas and tuna, plastic surgery, [View Full Entry]

This adventure started on Saturday morning when I left with some of the coolest AIESEC people Santa Marta heading for Baranquilla where we were suppose3d to spend the next 5 days. The event, SDL, Leadership Development Seminar, was absolutely great. Though we spent 5 days in a hotel, without the chance to visit Baranquilla, it was 100 % a success. The very best students in Colombia, some of the top minds, interesting debates, fun challenging activities, everything was new and fun and exciting. And after spending the entire day talking, exposing ideas , arguing on different issues concerning you [View Full Entry]

If you believe my guide book then San Agustin and Tierradentro are one of the most important archaeological sites in South America. Well they better be because the bus ride to San Agustin consisted of over 4 hours being shaken in a minibus as the road to the town is still not paved. Tierradentro is another 7 hours of which 2 are again on dirt road and on the way back there are about 2 more hours of the same. After all that you see statues carved out of stone in San Agustin and underground burial chambers in Tie [View Full Entry]
