Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

5th September -8th September: Tayrona national Park Tayrona national Park, a little gem of paradise just off the northern Colombian coast of the Carribean. Blessed with crystal turquoise waters, it was a perfect escape from the days of strenuous exercise on the lost city trek! I moved three days ago, I live downtown now and thank God for that! I donºt mean that it was awful where I lived before, on the contrary, it was great, the only problem was that I was 5 minutes away from Eafit and I was in a way stuck in that perimeter. 27th August- 29th August: Taganga 29th August- 3rd september: The Lost City We made our way to the fishing town of Taganga, staying at a hostel called ¨casa de felipe¨which just had the collest vibe...but more about that in 2 entries. We started our time in Colombia with open minds but I think we were all secretly a little scared. Made the mistake of checking the foreign office website the day before and it didnt do much to make us feel better. The jist of it was, you can go to Colombia we recommend it only on business, dont go here, here or here, dont use roads,fly everywhere, and dont do the trek to the lost city. Hmmm... FERIA ARTESANAL....Hand-made jewellery, mostly bracelets,bangles and necklaces, earrings , and also home-made cookies, pies, and a bunch of other different sweets... a dozen of stands offering first-hand top-quality Colombian delights and souvenirs. It began on Monday and it will last for a week, I guess until Friday. Nice handcraft , quite cheap, if you are in Medellin you should have a look and go home with some nice souvenirs.
