Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade, and also the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Just a taste of the most beautiful colonial town in the WORLD! Don't let anybody try to get you out of the city to visit the volcano, or the botanical garden, or any other silly nonsense...the best is just walking around and looking at all the cute funky cobbled streets and the well kept houses.

Downtown Bogota
A quick shot as i try not to look to conspicous with my camera, map and blond hair... hmmm
This was supposed to be an entry on downtown Bogota, but unfortunately i managed to lose all the photos ... So we will now cut to a day out at the finca ... an amazing farm house about 2 hours drive from Bogota. I went with my volunteer friend Ben and the extended family of the family he is staying with. It was amazing ... a 5 hour BBQ with a lovely Colombian family and all the aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins etc etc etc! A real family gathering! The farm was set in the mountains, with amazing views, blue skies and [View Full Entry]

Nothing like lying back in your hammock reading your book while overlooking the night lights of the small fishing village Taganga, and then a complete electricity blackout. The four of us just rocked back and forth, helped by the strong winds and had some sporadic conversation, everything is understated in Techos Azures (where we are staying), nothing too stressful, our main worry is getting a nice hammock or space on the beach to see the sunset! I fell asleep in my hammock but as wake up was nearly falling out I decided to hit my bed instead. Taganga is beautiful and [View Full Entry]

1. English first 2. Español abajo I am now in London, about to start my new job, therefore this is the final blog on my Colombian experience. Here are the final reflections of a young British guy who went to live with his girlfriend in her tropical native land…. The photos I have chosen for this blog epitomise the effervescent nature of life in Barranquilla. Since I returned home to Scotland last month, some differences between the UK and Colombia have really dawned on me. I once spent a day at Notting Hill Carnival, which is probably Britain’s biggest and [View Full Entry]

A night with the Mariachis South America » Colombia » Bogota By pipincolombia February 10th 2007 The Mariachis are traditional Mexican musicians and special occassions are often spent at one of the Mariachi bars in Bogota, where traditional Mexican music is alternated with Colombian hits for a night of Latin beats. The special occassion in this case [View Full Entry]

Hey All, Well after two weeks on the continent of South America, now´s the time to fill you in on the Carribean Coast of Colombia... So we flew into Cartagena from Panama City and spent 5 days in this cool colonial city. Lots of history; Cartagena was the most important port city in Spanish Empire to move the gold off this continent. As a result, it has built up some impressive architecture including large elaborate cathedreals, huge stone walls, and numerous forts and convents scattered around the area. Highlights in Cartegena would definately be walking around the old city ceter, wh [View Full Entry]

The journey begins
Stepping off the plane to Leticia I remembered that actually I wasn't quite saying farewell to Columbia yet and that we had just entered the gateway into the Amazon, and 150% humidity. God was it hot and sticky; it was the sort of humidity that meant you were wetter when you got out of the shower than when you were in it. The next couple of days were spent preparing ourselves for the journey ahead, buying supplies (Vodka, Munchies, Oh yeah and what would be our bed for the next 4 nights a hammock!) The pousada (that's a guest house) where [View Full Entry]

Drama's in Bogota

South America » Colombia » Bogota
With only one day in Bogotá there wasn't much time for sight seeing but after meeting a few really cool peeps I decided that there wasn't anything else to do other than commiserate my last day in Columbia but celebrate the time that I’d had. However even though I was only there for one day it never made it uneventful. After traipsing around the streets trying to find a decent bar open in down Bogotá (It’s the capital city and I wouldn't have it that nothing was on) we found the pub at the end of our road open and I [View Full Entry]
