Hi everyone, It's been almost a year to the day since my last blog, I didn't plan it that way, but it happened to be that way. I haven't had any chance to travel since I've been here which is sad, but I've been to Colombia many times as a tourist and have seen a lot of the places that many people come here for so it's ok. As I state on my profile the past year has been rough financially living and working here, but it has been a tremendous experience which I'll always be glad that I did make the choice to come back after a couple of years of traveling around the globe. For my own future in which I would like to retire in a few years, hopefully by my 40th I'd ... read more

Armero, a tragedy that has been referred as the second most deadly volcanic eruption of the 20th century Yeah, Armero, a town that was located on the shores of the Lagunillas River; its residents slept that horrible night comforted by the words of their priest on a loudspeaker and their mayor on the local radio. They, I guess, trying to calm the villagers down, told them that there was nothing to fear about, even though the Red Cross had given orders for an evacuation at 7 pm!. And that's how they ignored some of the threats and committed their greatest sin: overlooking the signs of nature, they had to face the consequences of a tragedy that was about to start, yeah that's right, the natives ignored an eruption, which according to reports, was hidden by that ... read more

San Sebastian de Mariquita La Capital Frutera de Colombia And then I went to the north of Tolima to see one of the cities whose name sometimes makes people laugh or frown their eyebrows, but I guess that´s why in 1997, they changed it to San Sebastian de Mariquita; described as the city of daydreams and hopes, as well as the fruit capital of Colombia, the city is so full of history, legends and myths that I thought, it would be worth a visit. So, I travelled to San Sebastian, oh yes, and after a 4-hour bus ride on a good road without any paying tolls, I found myself in the north of Tolima; shall I say I also felt like a king with the lovely weather at my disposal? The difference was, I wash´t provided ... read more

Such was the heat of the oncoming inferno that I thought I was in hell.

Last weekend (yet another bank holiday weekend, or puente), was one of my mate's birthdays so to celebrate a group of us went together to the Tatacoa Desert, about 8 hours by bus south of Bogotá. Having had some unexpected delays on the way there, we ended up having to spend Saturday night in a small town called Aipe. This was a very typical town, well off the beaten trail (as is the desert itself) and having wondered around for a few hours desperately seeking a hotel we finally got ourselves settled and had a brilliant night dancing salsa with all the locals, and drinking the local aguardiente. The next day, off we went on foot ith our tents and all our kit, searching for a river which we knew we had to cross. The scenery ... read more

And so my time at Manos Amigas/Lets Go Volunteer has come to an end. I’m so blessed to have met each and every single child; each one has touched my heart. They’re incredible groups of children, all so strong and so positive in the least desirable of conditions. They’ve confirmed my belief that you don’t need things to be happy. It’s just those around you and the experiences you create that make life whole. I thought it would be extremely difficult to leave these children, but I think it helped that I had to leave for my new job in Cartagena, almost as soon as I got back from my 2.5 week danger vacation. During that time, I was able to gain distance that has made it a bit easier to say good-bye. I’d like to ... read more

So I’m a bit behind but I’m going to try to give you the highlights: 1) Jane (proounced Jan-eh) got teeth! She was missing her four front teeth for quite a few years now. She’s already an ex-crackhead, so she’s crazy to begin with and without teeth just completes her nutty character. The Colombians can’t even understand her, and we have to interact with her everyday since she’s the cook! Berenice had bought her teeth for Christmas, otherwise she couldn't afford them. However, I had gotten used to her crazy accent, so now I can’t understand her all over again! But at least I don’t have to worry about meat flying out at me when she tries to use her gums as teeth, which of course doesn’t work. The meat winds up flinging out before her ... read more

Being here for a long time means getting to know the harsh backrounds of quite a few kids that come to both centers I volunteer at. Lots of reality checks and heartbreaks; most of which I've learned in the past month or so. One heartbreak is about Samuel and coming to find out his father beats him. I've always said since the beginning that I knew something was wrong at home. I thought his father had left, typical of a Colombian father to do, but instead he gives his tiny little boy a beat up face. The other is getting to go to the two girls' home that took a liking to me on Crackhead lunch day (I go to San Jose almost daily now, so I've gotten to know them quite well). It turns out ... read more

Last week, we decided to take the kids from Manos Amigas (my location) up a nearby mountain to one of the waterfalls to ring in the new year. Now this sounds like a grand ol' plan, but this is Colombia here, which means that this plan is really just a tricky situation. I actually almost didn't go that afternoon. The clouds were threatening rain, and I didn't feel like going on a really long hike up the mountain, sogging wet with about 35+ wet and cranky kids; especailly after my first experience with hiking the mountain (see the Stupid Foreigners post). But I decided to suck it up and go anyway, the kids were just too excited to say no, even though they would have gone without me. What started off as a great plan turned ... read more
