As I have been slacking off for a while, I thought it would be a good idea to write something for you, my dear folks. And here I find myself entertaining the thought of depicting the city I am working at the moment, Bucaramanga, the capital of the Santander Department, a capital whose economy has been compared to that of some developed countries, by a local newspaper. According to them, this is probably due to the fact that its economy is very diversified and it generates a large number of jobs; since many of its businesses come from family enterprises, the rates of poverty would be very low compared to other regions in the country.
Como me he encontrado perezeando un poco, pensé que sería una buena idea escribirles algo, mis queridos amigos. Y heme aquí, describiéndoles la ciudad donde trabajo en el momento, Bucaramanga, la capital del departamento de Santander, una capital cuya economía ha sido comparada a la de algunos países desarrollados., de acuerdo a un periódico local. Según este informe, esto es debido, probablemente, a que su economía es muy diversificada y genera gran cantidad de empleo; ya que muchos de sus negocios vienen de
empresas familiares, los índices de pobreza son muy bajos comparados con otras regiones en el país.
First of all, I have to tell you that there are two Santanders, the one in the north, where I come from, as you have seen from some of my entries, and the South, this is where I work, at present. Santander's name is taken from a famous Colombian general, Francisco de Paula Santander, one of our former presidents, better known as the Man of Laws. General Santander was born in Villa del Rosario de Cucuta, near the place where I am from. You see, I could've been a president myself, as I come from a land where people have the makings of a politician, that´s a thought... but what is true is that I wrap myself in the flag, or... maybe I was him, in one of my reincarnations, no but hold on, that would be too far for my nirvana, then, forget it. Anyway, he was a key character in our independence, and fought alongside Bolivar, our liberator; by the way these two, spent their time hating and befriending each other, but their actions marked the story of our
country.
Primero, tengo que contarles que tenemos dos Santanderes, uno en el norte, de donde soy, como lo han visto en algunos de mis escritos, y en el Sur, que es donde trabajo, por ahora. El nombre de Santander se tomó del general Colombiano conocido como Francisco de Paula Santander, uno de nuestros previos presidentes, mejor conocido como el Hombre de las Leyes. El General Santander nació en Villa del Rosario de Cúcuta, cerca al pueblo de donde soy. Como ven, yo hubiera podido ser presidente, pues tengo madera para político, mentiras! pero lo que si es verdad, es que soy leal a mi tierra, o debe de ser que yo fui Santander, en una de mis reencarnaciones, no, pero esperen, eso sería ir demasiado lejos para mi nirvana, mejor, olvídenlo. Bueno, Santander fue un personaje central en nuestra independencia, y luchó, al lado de Bolívar. Aunque los dos, se pasaron gran parte de su vida, odiándose y mostrándose afecto, sus acciones marcaron la historia de nuestro país.

Visita de Bolívar a Bucaramanga
Oleo de Javier Avendaño, de la Casa de Bolívaras people got fed up with the Spaniards and their imposed golden tributes; this cry, which as I described in a previous blog, originated from El Socorro, Santander, soon would be shared by other Colombians who would start organising ways to consolidate that very freedom.
Bueno, volviendo a lo del departamento, está compuesto de 87 pueblos, y el área metropolitana de Bucaramanga comprende los pueblos de Floridablanca, Girón y Piedecuesta. En Santander, pronto se escucharía el grito de libertad ya que la gente empezó a hartarse de los tributos de oro que imponían los Españoles; un grito que empezó a escucharse en otras regiones y luego ya se empezó a pensar en formas de consolidar la libertad tan buscada.
Bucaramanga, quite important for the country
Located at 959 MSNM, the 525,000-inhabitant city offers an awesome climate. Its name comes from a tree called the Bucaro, which is also an earthenware pot. The city was founded in 1622, and its metropolitan area is composed of three villages: Floridablanca, Giron and Piedecuesta. Bucaramanga served as stopover for some renown people, it was here, where José Celestino Mutis stayed for some time and took
the priest Eloy Valenzuela as his pupil to Bogota. Three years later, they would depart to their first countryside trip which would mark the beginning of the Royal Botanical Expedition. Simon Bolivar was another passerby, who had to kick his heels and stayed in the beautiful city. He was expecting a vital decision, nothing less than the formation of the Gran Colombia.
Ubicada a 959 SNM, la ciudad que 525.000 habitantes ofrece un clima super. Su nombre viene de un árbol llamado Búcaro, que también se le llama a una jarra de arcilla. Como lo describí en otras entradas de mi blog, fue en El Socorro, Santander, donde este grito mencionado antes parecía originarse. Bucaramanga sirvió como el sitio de pernoctación para algunos personajes importantes. Fue aquí, donde José Celestino Mutis permaneció durante algún tiempo y tomó como su pupilo a Eloy Valenzuela. Tres años más tarde, partirían para el primer viaje de campo que daría inicio a la famosa Expedición Botánica. Simón Bolívar fue también otro pasante por la ciudad quien se quedó en la ciudad mientras esperaba una decisión vital, nada más y nada menos que la formación de la Gran Colombia.
It would have been nice to keep that colonial past intact, but as in most capitals, the city dwellers, welcoming modernisation, soon wanted to change many of the beautiful tile roofs and mud houses for concrete towers, and as a result, the city is developing upwards with tall buildings and losing its entire charm, I´m afraid.
Hubiera sido bueno haber conservado ese pasado colonial intacto, pero como en toda ciudad moderna que se respete, los habitantes tratando de darle la entrada a la modernización, quisieron cambiar muchos de los bonitos techos de teja y las casas de barro por torres de cemento, y en consecuencia, la ciudad va de p´arriba, y me temo que... perdiendo su encanto.
Some journalists state that as a result of mining and energy investments, Bucaramanga's future is quite promising; its economics, based on manufacture and the service sector, notably shops and restaurants, is undergoing a most envious period. This, together with the latest foreign interest that the city has awakened abroad, the lifestyle of people and the improvement of houses are now synonymous with high social standards and commercial development. Bucaramanga is the place to be in some years´
time, according to some local newspapers. However, we have to admit that the present growth of the city has been the result of private investments rather than family enterprises and that unfortunately, the intelectual minds of many graduates are leaving the city, owing to the lack of job opportunities. What´s true is that thanks to great health services, the city expects to cater to lots of potential tourists.
Según algunos periodistas, gracias a inversiones en minería y energía, el futuro de Bucaramanga promete; su economía, basada en la manufactura y servicios, especialmente almacenes y restaurantes, pasa por una etapa envidiable. Esto, junto con el reciente interés que la ciudad parece haber despertado en el extranjero, el estilo de vida de su gente y la mejora de las viviendas corresponde a unos mejores estándares de vida y desarrollo comercial. Bucaramanga es el lugar donde se debe estar en algunos años, de acuerdo a algunos periódicos locales. Sin embargo, más que de empresas familiares, gran parte del desarrollo se debe a inversiones de sectores privados y gran parte de los graduados han tenido que irse a Bogotá por falta de oportunidades de trabajo. Lo que si es verdad es
que gracias a buenos servicios de salud, la ciudad espera atraer muchos turistas potenciales.
Health Tourism
Thanks to two worldwide health centres: the Cardiovascular Foundation and the Foscal, Bucaramanga is to become a great contributor to our country´s tourism. The secret of the success of these two health enterprises are state of the art technology, procedures that enjoy high quality standards and the affordable prices for lots of foreigners who are coming here from different places, mostly from San Martin and the Pacific islands. It is expected that this tourist boom will spawn lots of new businesses and generate tons of jobs. As a consequence, the city has grown in shopping malls and to our pleasure, prices of clothes have decreased as there is brand competition, at last!
Nos fuimos de salud mundial, gracias a dos centros de salud, que colocarán a Bucaramanga como un gran contribuidor de nuestro turismo: La Fundación Cardiovascular y la Foscal. El secreto de estas dos empresas de salud son la tecnología de punta, los procedimientos de alta calidad y los precios accesibles para muchos extranjeros que vienen de diferentes lugares, notablemente de San Martin
y de las islas del Pacífico. Se espera que la bonanza del turismo creará muchos otros negocios y que genere gran cantidad de empleos. Por ahora la ciudad está creciendo en centros comerciales y para nuestra comodidad, los precios de ropa han bajado ya que al fin tenemos competencia de marcas.
Why living in Bucaramanga?
Personally, I find that the advantages of living in this city are the weather, commodity and quietness, more than a city, Bucaramanga is a big town. Well, we are far from other important cities and yet, there are great investment projects as it seems that lots of multinational chains want to invest here. But the problem is that due to this promising future of the city, the prices of houses skyrocketed and those, who are investing on property, are doing it on credit with low bank interests, which seems like a vicious circle.
Personalmente, pienso que las ventajas de vivir en esta ciudad son el clima, la comodidad y la calma, más que una ciudad, Bucaramanga parece un pueblo grande. Y aunque estemos lejos de otras ciudades importantes, han habido grandes inversiones porque parece que muchas cadenas extranjeras

I very much like the yard of the school, here I came to examine students as they started also using Cambridge exams in their curriculum. Good for them. quieren invertir aquí. Pero el problema es que debido a la promesa de tan preciado futuro, los precios de las casas están por las nubes y los que están invirtiendo en propiedad, continúan haciéndolo en crédito, con intereses bancarios bajos, lo que parece un círculo vicioso.
In the rush to pack flats into dense urban areas..oops!
It is not a surprise that foreigners have become quite interested in our country, it is not for nothing that we are ranked fourth in biological diversity following countries like Brazil, Australia and China. That makes me quite proud of muy country! However, what worries me is that there is so much concern about some of the cities catering to the potential needs of so many foreigners coming here, that it looks like that concern triggers the rush to build soulless buildings of plain concrete, without devoting some energy to other vital issues; what a shame that would be, but I guess it will work out in the end. I can not help but thinking about China again.
No es sorpresa que los extranjeros se hayan interesado en nuestro país, por algo, se nos cataloga de cuartos en
diversidad biológica luego de países es como Brazil, Australia y China. Eso me hace sentirme muy orgulloso de mi país! Sin embargo, lo que me preocupa es que haya tanta urgencia por alistarse a las necesidades potenciales de tantos extranjeros radicándose aquí, que parece que esta preocupación se manifiesta en una construcción acelerada de edificios en concreto, abandonando, quizás, algunas necesidades más vitales; lo que no va a quedar muy bonito, pero bueno, parece que va a funcionar al final, supongo. Sin quererlo, me hace pensar en China nuevamente.
Well, somebody might think that these changes demand a better road infrastructure... The downside of this, is that, as I mentioned it on the Floridablanca entry, I gather the government did not plan things carefully and although lots of buildings are being built, the road infrastructures are chaotic, and without wanting to contradict some of the local newspapers, in that respect, we are far behind developed cities by miles. What´s good about this, is that there are some current projects and they are planning to build a bridge, whose intention is to sort out the chaotic transport from La Foscal to the city; I hope
it becomes a reality since currently, it now takes you so long to actually go from one place to the other, lots of traffic jams, I believe that this, together with the lack of cultural places to visit, are being the Achiles heel in this beautiful city. But I am optimistic that it will soon be sorted out.
La desventaja es, que como lo mencioné en el escrito de Floridablanca, creo que el gobierno no planeó las cosas cuidadosamente y aunque se están construyendo muchos edificios, la infraestructura vial está por ahora caótica, y sin querer contradecir algunos periódicos locales, estamos detrás de ciudades desarrolladas, pero por millas. Lo bueno del asunto es que ya hay proyectos para construír un puente que pretende acabar con el caos de transporte cuando se viene de la Foscal a la ciudad, ojalá y se haga realidad, pues por ahora, le toma a uno tanto tiempo para ir de un lugar a otro, muchos trancones, creo que esto, además de la falta de lugares culturales donde ir, son por ahora, el Talón de Aquiles de la Ciudad Bonita. Pero quedo optimista que muy pronto se arreglará esto.

Si, fuimos a cantar, y me oyeron cantar con mi voz de pote. Ah, y como cosa rara, luego nos echamos tremenda bailadora. just hope, Bucaramanga will never lose some of the beautiful qualifying words used to describe it:
La ciudad de los Parques, la ciudad bonita, etc. However, as the city is located on a plateau which seems to have now reached its building quota, it is worrisome that high buildings continue being built everywhere... I wonder if in some years time, we'll have our New York version of the city. Good or bad, it is up to you to judge. But I don´t want the city to have fewer parks, old houses and more buildings but that's one of the disadvantages of becoming international, the "Ciudad Bonita" shall be called the Vertical City? specially now that there are plans for the country to become one of the most popular destinations in South America, for one, it has been taken off the list of countries not respecting human rights. Well, I am happy about that but I hope the city´s government will soon be prepared. They need to start building roads quite soon or else, we might forecast chaos.
Solo espero que Bucaramanga nunca pierda los adjetivos bonitos que la describían: The Park City, the Pretty City, etc. Sin
embargo, ya que la ciudad se encuentra ubicada en un altiplano que ya ha alcanzado su cuota de edificación, es preocupante que se continúe construyendo edificios altos por todos lados, me pregunto que va a pasar en algunos años, vamos a tener la versión Newyorkina aquí. Bueno o malo? ustedes son los jueces. Pero no quiero que tengamos menos parques, casas viejas y más edificios altos, pero esa es una de las desventajas de volverse internacional, la Ciudad Bonita se llamará entonces la Ciudad Vertical? especialmente, ahora que nuestro país ya fue quitado de la lista de países que no respetan los derechos humanos, como que nos vamos a volver el destino más popular de Sur América. Bien, estoy feliz por eso, y tenemos que prepararnos para ello, sobre todo las autoridades. Necesitan empezar a construir buenas carreteras pronto o si no, podríamos augurar un caos.
Another aspect to work on is the lack of traffic lights, crossing streets is sometimes like an adventure; I can´t tell what´s more crazy, some of the aggressive drivers with their unnecessary horning or their speed while you intend to cross on a pedestrian crossing. My God, people need to learn
to stop in front of those pedestrian crossings but it might seem that this is not taught on the driving courses, otherwise, anybody can get a driving licence without much of a skill exam. How dangerous is that? Well, the other day, I was happy to see some guys wearing costumes trying to teach drivers how to behave on zebras, I liked it
Otra cosa en la que se debe trabajar es en la falta de semáforos, a veces es como una aventura cruzar las calles; no sabría decir qué es peor, los conductores agresivos con su innecesaria pitadera o su velocidad, cuando uno intenta cruzar las zebras. Dios, la gente tiene que aprender a parar enfrente de esas zebras para peatones, pero parece que eso no se enseña en los cursos de conducción, si no, pareciera que cualquiera puede obtener su licencia de conducción sin saber mucho o presentar un examen de competencias, qué peligro. Lo bueno es que hace un mes, cerca a la Uis, vi a unos jóvenes disfrazados tratando de hacer campaña para que la gente aprenda a respetar los pasos peatonales, me gusta!
A sustainable city? Well, install more pedestrian traffic lights and stop cutting trees down
We need the city to be enlightened by futurists who can turn what seems, sometimes, a big town into a modern city. For a start, according to Dilma, the Spanish teacher for foreigners, some French students who lived here two years ago, in the city, there is no respect for its pedestrians. When we walk in most places in Bucaramanga, one cannot help but fearing being run over as the city doesn´t have enough headlights for the pedestrians and let me tell you, most drivers do not stop al the time when a pedestrian is crossing on the zebra crossings, so it seems that the best way to go is just pray and you might be ok.
Necesitamos que Bucaramanga esté iluminada por futuristas que entiendan que lo que parece, a veces, un pueblo grande, se pueda transformar en una verdadera ciudad. Para empezar, de acuerdo a Dilmita, la profe de Español de extranjeros, para algunos estudiantes Franceses que vivieron aquí hace dos años, no hay respeto para los peatones. Cuando caminamos en algunos lugares de Bucaramanga, uno no puede evitar sentir que lo van a
atropellar pues la ciudad no tiene casi semáforos para peatones, y en regla general, a los conductores no se les educó para parar cuando haya un peatón cruzando la calle. Esas zebras aquí, son solamente adornos, pero no se descuide cuando vaya a cruzar, mejor rece para que le vaya bien.
And they are absolutely right; incidentally, I´ve just read on "And", a free newspaper, on its edition of Friday, 13th, June, that out of 1082 traffic lights in Bucaramanga, only 166 include lights for the pedestrians. Thus, you can imagine, the protection devoted to pedestrians who have to adventure crossing some streets and leave their security in the hands of the drivers. The newspaper also talks about a plan that has not been approved yet, which demands for an investment of 45 thousand million pesos to change the whole system of pedestrian safety. To make things worse, they claim that some of existing the traffic lights have been out of service for a long time.
Y tienen toda la razón; a propósito, acabo de leer en And, un periódico que se reparte gratis en la ciudad, en su edición del 13 de Junio
que de los 1082 semáforos que hay en la ciudad, solo 166 dan luz verde para los peatones. Se imaginan entonces, la protección que se le da a los transeúntes de la ciudad, quienes tienen que aventurarse al cruzar las calles y dejar su seguridad en manos de los conductores. El periódico también habla de un plan que no se ha aprobado todavía y que pide una inversión de 45 mil millones de pesas que intenta igualmente cambiar todo el sistema de seguridad para los peatones. Para acabar de complicar las cosas, el periódico argumenta que algunos de los semáforos ya existentes han estado fuera de servicio durante mucho tiempo.
Now, imagine how the handicapped or blind people would feel when crossing the streets. This is something that needs to be tackled soon, which is more important than just cutting down trees to have blocks of flats built. Estación de Metrolínea
I don´t know why there is no planning before investing so much in projects like this, which exacerbated the transport situation in Bucaramanga God! It is not like crossing the street in Ho Chi Minh but hey, we need headlights!
Ahora, imagínense como se sentirán las personas descapacitadas y los invidentes cuando tienen que cruzar las calles. Es algo que necesita ser tratado pronto, que me parece más importante que andar cortando árboles para construír torres de apartamentos. Cuando me bajo del metrolínea para ir a la UIS, me apiado de los pobres estudiantes universitarios, quienes tienen que cruzar las calles para llegar a la universidad, hay muchos carros y se vuelve, a veces, un caos, Dios mío! No tanto como en Ho Chi Minh Vietnam pero hey, necesitamos semáforos!
Transport
Well, that, I must say that it is not as good as it should. The Metro linea has been running since 2010 as the main means of transport but having worked quite well in Bogota, as it is such a huge city, here in Bucaramanga, it didn't add to the betterment of the transport system; which is most unfortunate. Instead, there is actually more chaos in the city, with pile-ups every now and then due sometimes to the anger of drivers; the company has been
sued like 26 times due to road accidents. This type of transport should be used in big areas but here, in a small city like Bucaramanga, the buses were enough to run the city from north to south, and in contrast, it has generated lots of congestion issues.
Bien, eso, debo insistir que no es tan bueno como debería ser. El Metro línea trabaja desde el 2010 y se convirtió en el principal medio de transporte; en Bogotá fue catalogado como un ejemplo innovador para otros países, y además, Bogotá es enorme, pero aquí en Bucaramanga, un tranvía de estos, no mejoró el sistema de transporte. En verdad, como lo había mencionado en mi blog sobre Floridablanca, lo que hizo este metrolínea aquí, fue empeorar las cosas, tenemos las colisiones que ya se han vuelto normales, de vez en cuando; ya han demandado a la compañía que lo trajo como 26 veces debido a accidentes en las carreteras. Este tipo de transporte debería ser utilizado en areas grandes pero aquí, en una ciudad pequeña como Bucaramanga, los buses eran suficientes para recorrer la ciudad de norte a sur, y en contraste, lo que ha generado es mucha
congestión.
I don´t know why, like in other countries, the buses do not have a fixed schedule so that users can know exactly how much is left for their arrival. People do not have the choice for authorities removed the normal buses and now, we are all obliged to take the Metro Linea. I feel so sorry for students, who have to take P3 and P6 to go to Uis and it is such a joke with those buses, they run late, you wait for them like 25 minutes, and out of the blue, they appear like in threes. The company is lucky that apart from the quiet public outcry when people get fed up with waiting, nothing else is said about the bad service of the metrolinea.
No sé por qué, como en otros países, los buses no tienen horario fijo para saber cuanto hay que esperar. Al pueblo pues no le queda más elección que coger el Metrolínea porque quitaron la mayoría de los otros buses. Siento pena con los estudiantes de la Uis, demora uno esperando 25 minutos los P3 y P6 y luego, así de sorpresa, aparecen 3 al mismo
tiempo, qué recocha! De buenas la compañía que, aparte de la protesta callada de la gente, que se desespera al esperar el bus, nada más se dice o se hace con respecto al mal servicio del metro linea.

UIS This is the university, where I am at present working. Being the best university in the department and one of the 8 best universities in the country, according to the Sapiens Research that measures the best ranked universities. Since 2010, I have been teaching at the Languages School, subjects such as English Intermediate and Advanced, Academic Writing, Principles of Research and Classroom Research. This semestre, I was assigned Applied Methodology, where in the first part, students need to read a lot, which I love and then, I go and observe their lessons in a high school. I love it. It is always a pleasure to teach there as the intrinsic interest of students, as well as their curiosity and desire to learn, make my day every time I visit the premises. I feel that a good rapport is established with my students, just before you can say knife and
I can put it down to he fact that I am teaching future English teachers, so we share a common interest, and it is quite easy to relate to them. I can see myself reflected in their curiosity to learn and that keeps my teaching motivation going.
Esta es la universidad, en la que trabajo. Siendo la mejor universidad en el departamento y una de las 8 mejores en Colombia, de acuerdo a la Sapiens Research que mide las mejores universidades del país. Desde el 2010, he estado enseñando en la Escuela de Idiomas, materias como Inglés Intermedio y Avanzado, Escritura Académica, Principios de Investigación e Investigación en el Aula. Ahora último, me dieron Metodología Aplicada que es una materia, en la que toca leer mucho sobre cómo enseñar, lo que me parece genial y luego, observo las clases de los estudiantes en colegios. Siempre es un placer enseñar allí dado el interés intrínseco de los estudiantes, así como su curiosidad y deseo de aprender, lo que me alegra el día, cada vez que visito las instalaciones. Siento que siempre tenemos una rápida empatía allí y se lo achaco al hecho de que allí enseño a futuros
profesores de Inglés, entonces compartimos un interés común y puedo verme reflejado en su curiosidad para aprender y eso me sube la motivación.

This is the first private university certified in the region. Here I worked for 4 years as an English teacher in the main headquarters in Terrasas and from my blog in Floridablanca, you can see about my work as coordinator of the English Nursing programme. It was a pleasure to work with a good group of colleagues, contribute greatly to the English department reform, as I had the chance to meet some good heads of department, who are very interested in the good work of the department, and I also helped out in the translation of the web site of the university. My best friend, Dilma continues working there, I have great memories of the research done with her, María Mercedes and Luz Mary, and under the guidance of Victor Manuel and the popular Jorgito, we did some interesting research. I love their Philharmonic Orchestra, which I listened to once, I am glad the orchestra have such a great director.
Esta es la primera universidad privada
certificada en la región. aquí trabajé durante 4 años como profesor de Inglés en Terrasas y desde mi blog sobre Floridablanca, pueden ver sobre mi trabajo como coordinador del programa de Inglés de Enfermería. Fue un placer trabajar con un grupo bueno de colegas, contribuir a la reforma del departamento de Inglés, pues tuve la oportunidad de conocer algunos decanos interesados en un buen desempeño del departamento, que están y ayudar en la traducción del sitio web de la universidad. Mi mejor amiga, Dilma continúa trabajando allí, con quien y junto con María Mercedes y Luz Mary, y guiados Victor Manuel y el popular Jorgito, hicimos una investigación interesante. Adoro la orquesta filarmónica, y estoy contento de que la orquesta tenga tan buen director.
SANTO TOMAS UNIVERSITY The department of languages at this university is undergoing changes which are promising. For what I know, I can put it down to the energy and desire to change things that the director and some of the teachers of the department, have managed to infect in both teachers and students. Kudos for them. I have recently invigilated a CAE exam (level C1 from the European Framework)
from Cambridge taken by most of my excolleagues from San Toto, which shows that the university is really committed towards the good formation of its teachers. My niece Lisette is studying Dentistry there and I am glad that her teacher is the popular Mao, one of my previous colleagues in both San Toto and UDES.
El departamento de Lenguas en esta universidad está pasando por algunos cambios que son promisorios. Por lo que sé, creo que se debe a la energía y deseo de cambiar cosas que la directora y algunos de los profesores del departamento, han logrado contagiar tanto en profesores como estudiantes. Bien hecho! Recientemente, tuve que vigilar uno de los exámenes de Cambridge, CAE tomado por la mayoría de mis excolegas de la San Toto, lo que muestra que la universidad está realmente comprometida hacia la buena formación de los profesores. Mi sobrina Lisette está estudiando Odontología allí y estoy contento que su profesor sea el popular Mao, uno de mis anteriores colegas en la San Toto y la UDES.

CECAM I loved the IELTS classes there, you teach very small classes, mine were between 4 and 7, ideal for teaching IELTS. Here again, I was very motivated given the interest of students, who were quite needy of the international certificate to be able to travel to other English speaking countries and know they have to work hard. I am very thankful to Leidy who was most helpful to put me in the picture as to how things worked there. There was such a good environment in
the classes that I went out a couple of times for a beer with the students after the class. There, we spoke English all the time and I hope it helped them improve their speaking ability.
Me gustaron las clases de IELTS allí, se enseñan a pequeños grupos, los míos eran 4 y 7, ideal para enseñar un curso de IELTS. Aquí nuevamente, estuve muy motivado dado el interés de los estudiantes, quienes sintiendo la necesidad de obtener el certificado internacional para poder viajar a otros países de habla inglesa, saben que tiene que meterla duro. Me gustó trabajar con Leidy, quién me orientó sobre la forma de hacer los cursos allí. Había un buen ambiente en las clases y salimos con algunos grupos a tomarnos una cervecita luego de las clases, ahí en el parque las Palmas. Allí, hablamos inglés todo el tiempo y espero que esa práctica les haya ayudado.

Yeah, that's what a taxi driver told me once. Well, I like talking to taxi drivers as they might be interesting sometimes. The one I talked to told me that people in Bucaramanga are highly
gifted when it comes to learn German. The reasons he gave were that the first German who arrived in Colombia got first to Bucaramanga. He said that people here have adopted their manners and that you notice that whenever you get into a store as they greet you with a "Buenos Dias" with a German accent; I haven't noticed that but I will pay attention now as it seems that that's the way it is. And he even added that this is something the tourists need to know so that they do not get offended.

Casa de Bolívar Here, at the current headquarters of the Academy of History of Santander, you can experience some of what our liberator lived for 70 days in 1828, where he stayed while expecting the big decisions leading to one of the most important events in our history: the formation of the Gran Colombia. According to the guide who took Dilmita and me on a guide tour, the house keeps some of Bolívar´s most cherished possessions such as as his coffee strainer, an ink dryer, his treasure chest, a silver goblet, and something which found quite weird, they still keep a blanket and a comb from a lady who danced with him. They also keep garments and letters of the aide-de-camps who accompanied Bolívar; they were mainly generals, colonels and lieutenants. They also keep objects of worship (incense, robes, etc.) of Father Eloy Valenzuela, a former priest of
the church of Dolores in Giron, who would later be killed. He and Luis Peru De LaCroix, the main Bolivar´s aide-de-camp wrote the first newspaper of Bucaramanga.

There I learned that Bolívar was an engaging devotee of the Holy Trinity, the Virgin of Chiquinquirá and San Francisco, that´s why, to make his stay more pleasant, they brought the two big pictures that still remain in the House. There are also other adjacent rooms such as Santander´s Academy of presidents from 1929 to 2006, the Guane room, where you can see objects, such as ceramics, that somehow allow us to reconstruct some of the experiences of this indigenous community.

The Water Park Built in 2001, the park came up from the idea of using Morrorico's reservoirs and it is there where the Metropolitan Aqueduct of Bucaramanga is located. The park has received several prizes and it attracts lots of tourists, specially during Christmas as people adorn it with different colourful lights that work as in a theme park. You can visit it from 9 am to 7 pm.

There were also music shows for everybody: boleros, Alci Acosta, salsa: Eddie Herrera, Pop: Gali Galiano and I am quite surprised that people from B/manga like vallenatos so much, it is surprising as this is not the coast. They brought Peter Manjarrés, Oscar Celedon and Jorge Oñate. I heard Silvestre Dangon was very taken aback by the rain of that day, and decided on the spot to change the venue. I felt a bit sympathetic for those who
had bought the tickets as they had to rush to the now free entry venue.
El festival más viejo de la ciudad. La Feria Ganadera #61 tuvo lugar del 15 al 19 de septiembre en Cenfer. También hubo shows de música para todos: boleros, Alci Acosta, en salsa: Eddie Herrera, Pop: Gali Galiano y estoy super sorprendido que a la gente de Bucaramanga les guste tanto el vallenato, la sorpresa viene de que no estamos en la costa. Trajeron a Peter Manjarrés, Oscar Celedon y Jorge Oñate. Oí que Silvestre Dangón se sorprendió harto de la lluvia ese día, y decidió de una cambiar el lugar de presentación. Pobres aquellos que habían comprado los tiquetes y les tocó correr al nuevo sitio de concierto donde la entrada era gratis.
Concert at UNAB There was a beautiful Christmas concert on Dec 11th by UNAB'S Symphonic Orchestra in the restaured auditorium. The concert offered different Christmas carols and a set of traditional songs. I particularly loved the arrangements they made to "Mi burrito Sabanero". The director of the orchestra had a French look, he's from Bucaramanga and has played in different worldwide orchestras,
notably in Rome and Germany. It was quite nice to see some of my and Dilma´s previous students playing at the orchestra, thanks to Ivan Pedraza who was playing the violin, I was able to get some tickets for my parents and my best friend.
Hubo un concierto bonito de Navidad el 11 de diciembre dado por la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Unab en el auditorio que se acababa de restaurar. Se ofrecieron diferentes villancicos y un set de canciones tradicionales. Me gustó particularmente los arreglos que se le hicieron a "Mi burrito Sabanero". El director de orquesta tenía un look muy francés, es de B/manga y ha tocado en diferentes orquestas mundiales, notablemente en Roma y Alemania. Fue agradable ver a algunos de mis estudiantes y de Dilma tocando en la orquesta, gracias a Ivan Pedraza que tocaba el violín, pude conseguir esos tiquetes para mis papás y mi mejor amiga.

By the way, the National Federacion de Cafeteros, who are the creators of the Coffee Belt Park, which I have here on my blog, should learn from Juan Valdez's owners; they have shown that through a simple leaflet, you can learn tons of things. At the Coffee Belt, they might make people's visit more worthwhile by giving visitors the chance to learn about our coffee while they have fun at the theme park; please, people need more signs and good explanations, or call me and I'll be pleased to discuss some creative ideas.
