23rd July, Parque Tayrona, Colombia
After a night of broken sleep, we woke up at 6am and thankfully had no bites! Getting to te communal showers was like an assault course. You had to balance yourself across pipes, over sewage with insects below.. All this while being attacked by mosquitos.
We had heard about a local Panaderia (bakery) which was supposed to be delicious. We arrived just as he was taking the bread out of the oven. You could choose from cheese, arequipe (caramel) or chocolate!!!!!! The chocolate one was huge and unlike english donuts where you just get a tiny squeeze of jam, these ones were oooozing out! Yummy! We stayed on Arrecifes beach after breakfast but annoyingly it was really overcast. We made our way along the beach and then through a short bit of jungle to the next beach, la piscina where it is safe to swim. Jake was amused by all the crabs that kept popping out of their holes and at one point he camped out next to a crab hole teasing it to come out so he could take a picture!
We relaxed on the beach which was quiet because of the weather until midday when it cleared and out came the screaming, whinging, crying kids that gave me a headache! Not eating very much and feeling dehydrated was making me feel irritable!
That evening we treated ourselves to a cheap meal (we only eat one meal a day now to save cash for the states!) of rice and vegetables with chips which filled a hole. That night at the campsite was like benig on Noahs ark!! Chickens were running around all over the place squawking while being chased by cats, frogs dropped around the tables, lizards were running up the trees, horses grazed near the toilets and a bat was flying around the roof of our hut! Alot of the chickens seemed to like our hammocks, as we found them sitting on he bug nets jumping from one hammock to another!
Hungry, bored, tired and irritated by all the mosquitos we thought we would hide from the bugs under the bugnets of our hammocks and go to sleep! (it was only 8pm!!!!)
