Well after day in the national park tayrona we decided to leave on a high so we set of the following day, well evening on the overnight bus to Medellin. Now this city is notorious with the problems Colombia USED to have. There is such an air about Colombia which is over shadowing the true nature of the country. Id say i have felt more comfortable walking about here than i did in Costa rica and Panama. Over travellers we have spoken to have said the same about venezuala!!!
Its time people really opened their eyes to what is here and what the true colombians are like.
Well we arrived at 0800 in Medellin after 16 gruelling hours on the bus which felt like a fridge as the air conditioning is so cold... Even with a fleece and a hat i didnt get much sleep, i´ll take my sleeping bag next time.
We didnt do much apart from chill on the day we arrived as Debbie had been quite ill the previous day, i wont go into details, not too pleasant.
Day two at last we found someone who is organised a norwegian guy who is setting up a tour agency but who is down to eart h and genuine.
As we disappeared into the colombian highlands i had a slight twinge of nervousness whihch soon disappeared. We drove up out of the valley to some 2000 m´s. Did the tourist things of getting a photo for posperity. we then made our way to the guy who works nights house where we sampled a local fresh fruit smoothy and the fruit of a cactus both delicious.
From here we made our way to a trout farm, two small ponds where we fished using bamboo rods and just a hook with a little bread. 15 minutes later we had nine fish, not really fishing but a fun experience all the same. we handed over the fish to a local boy who set about filleting them for us. Now he and his friend can only have been 8 or 9!!!!
Whilst we left them to this we had a stroll through the jungle to a small picturesque waterfall. very pleasant. On our return our fish was served to us with rice, salsa, patacones ( squashed fried plaintains like big bananas) another culinary delight which we have been fortunate to sample on our travels.
Before heading home well our home for the next couple of nights we drove up to a view point where we had another spectacular view down over the different side of the valley, from 2500 meters you could literally see for miles.
On our way back into town, which seemed strange being only 25 minutes drive away, going form one extreme to another we had a spectacular lightning display set out over the mountains. What more can you ask for from one day.
