Marching in honour of a presidential visit to Cartagena
Our overland truck was still not with us with us. It was currently taking a significant detour through the backroads of Colombia, avoiding known blackspots where vehicles have been held up by bandits, and avoiding the areas where guerillas were potentially active. It would catch up with us in a few days time. In the meantime, we took another flight to the city of Cartagena, on the north coast. (To give you an idea of the size of Colombia, the country has almost 2,000 km of coastline!) Cartagena is situated on the Carribean Sea, and was one of Colombia´s first cities [View Full Entry]

Of all the cities that we have visited so far in South America this one we have liked the most. With a history of pirates this town has forts and a Spanish colonial center next to a high rise resort area on a fantastic beach. But it is hot! When we left the plane the hot moist air hit us. Jose met us at the airport. He would be our host during our visit. He explained some history on the short ride to the hotel. We were staying at Hotel El Viajero inside the walls of the old town. Rooms had [View Full Entry]

Cartegena was a fortified city to protect the city from pirates. It was the main port where the treasures which the Spanish had aquired from South America were shiped to Spain.

Nice city
Nice city
this is some nice theatre or church or whatever
Well, I finally got out of Santa Marta. And Cartagena is really nice. The buildings are lovely. Ancient walls and stuff. I had a little wander around but will do more later this afternoon. I saw a demonstration. Power to tha people. And then Rene had a haircut. And you can get fried chicken with a surgical glove to eat it with. And some potatoes. [View Full Entry]

This is Cartagena, A place with a history of pirates, stunning Carribean beaches, Colonial architecture, hot days, humid nights, corner cocaine dealers, and parading prostitutes. This is a place that seems to barrage you with a culture that isn't found outside of Colombia, in a city that still houses forts, barracks, and cannons from ages found now only at the theatre. This is Cartagena! So what am I doing here? I am travelling with my Scottish friend that I met on the 'Ciudad Perdida' trek. His name is Colin (great name). We thought we ought to come back to Cartagena, [View Full Entry]

I arrived in this beautiful city just yesterday. Just checking on the possibility of hiring on a commercial vessel; or the chance of meeting some Canadians or Americans who need an experienced hand of their ship! if not, I'll return to Medellin. [View Full Entry]

Finally made it to Cartegena and to this internet shop I was wanting to see. I haven't really seen the city yet, but me and my friend came straight to the internet first to see what was going on...it's quite the sight to see in cartegena. But really though, they're all kinda the same huh? I'm gunna try to write a proper blog because I think it's been quite a while since I have updated. So...man where did I leave off? Well, we got into colombia, did the hike to the lost city, which was really nice. Then we came back [View Full Entry]

Travelling to Colombia was not in our plan at all, but hey here we are! The initial plan to fly from Caracas to Panama was quickly changed as soon as we heard the price of the ticket as it would have cost us around $1000.00. Sitting on the beach in Santa Fe, we decided to head to Columbia and try to go by boat to Panama. It sounded lovely to sail on a 40 feet boat via the San blas Island - not that any of us has ever been on a sailing boat before. Full of excitement, we took [View Full Entry]
