We survived the Bogota traffic jam and made it back to our hostel safely. Fortunately our bags were still at the hostel and with all their contents! We were again told that we would be staying in an apartment rather than the main hostel building. We were led to the same building, but this time up to the fourth floor and into a large two bedroom apartment – not bad for 30AUD per night! It would have been even better if the hot water worked…
I spent the next few hours on the phone to approximately a million people at our airline trying to sort out our flight home which they decided to change to a day later without telling us. Eventually we decided to give up trying to get any sense out of the call centre staff and deal with it at the airport the following day…not before I’d planned the very painful deaths of a number of the people I’d spoken to…
For our last dinner in Colombia we decided to go to a restaurant we’d had our eyes on since we entered the country – Wok! Wok is a South East Asian chain restaurant which we
assumed would be similar to a casual noodle box type restaurant. However, when we walked in wearing our polar fleece and hiking boots we felt incredibly underdressed in comparison to the middle class Colombians who were out for a fancy dinner and wearing their nice (clean!) clothes. We ordered a ridiculous amount of food in order to satisfy our craving for garlic, ginger, chilli and flavour in general. Everything (spring rolls, Sichuan chicken, five spice chicken and noodles, Thai red curry and various fruit juices) was delicious and we left feeling incredibly full but very happy.
The following morning we headed back to La Puerta Falsa for chocolate complete (hot chocolate with cheese, bread and a biscuit) for breakfast. The hot chocolate would have been much nicer if it had milk in it and Scott was not very keen on the cheese in it. After breakfast we headed back to Mueso del Oro to take some photos as we didn’t have our camera with us the first time we went. We made our way around the museum very quickly and I’m sure all the staff thought we were very strange as we weren’t really reading anything, just snapping away.
After the museum we found a hairdresser and managed to communicate that Scott wanted a haircut. Fortunately it worked out and we left about 45 minutes later; Scott had an acceptable amount of hair left and I had my nails painted – all for about 7AUD.
After packing up our stuff and checking out of our hotel, we made our way back to Wok for another delicious meal. They hadn’t opened for lunch yet when we arrived so we joined the queue (yep, the queue) and waited impatiently for about 10 minutes. It was lucky that we got there so early, if we’d been much later we wouldn’t have been able to get a seat and I would have had to put up with Scott crying for the rest of the day, if not the rest of the trip. We had another delicious meal and again left feeling very full.
After lunch we decided to visit the Museo Nacional which was just next to Wok. The museum was a mixed bag of historical artefacts (pre-Hispanic and Hispanic), art as well as some mummies. There was also an exhibition of ancient Greek pottery on loan from the Louvre.
Neither of us enjoyed this museum as much as Museo del Oro, but it was a good way of spending a few hours before we had to catch a taxi to the airport for the first leg of our journey back home to Australia – the flight from Bogota to Lima.
We both really enjoyed our time in Colombia. I wish we’d had more time so we could explore other areas of the country…next time perhaps!
