After breakfast at the cafe down the road from our hostel in Pereira, we prepared for another long day on buses. We took a taxi to the bus terminal, and our taxi driver was a pretty funny guy. He kept razzing other taxi drivers. They didn't find it quite as funny as he (or we) did. We drove past a dog walker with about six dogs, and he shook his head and said, “No no no no no...” Not for any money would he do that job. Well, mayb... no no no no no. Our bus to Medellin was a nice big bus. I slept for about 4.5 out of the 5.5 hours. And there were some windy roads so that was no small feat. I got woken up at rest stop and had to get ... read more

Steve and I have spent most of our adult life living in cities so it makes a nice change to unwind and live for a while in a small town. Travelling also takes its toll so it is nice to stay still for a while. We have taken a volunteering opportunity to teach English with a foundation based in schools throughout Medellin. Our time is split between two schools in the town of El Carmen de Viboral, high up in the mountains outside of the city. Our accommodation is provided by the foundation and we are living with a Colombian family who have been amazing. They have accepted us into their family at the same time as giving us the space and privacy that we need. We are being fed well (the eggs are fresh from ... read more

The Paisa City Now, the chance to visit the Paisa city of Medellin, but why Paisa? the word comes from the Spanish word paisano which means fellow countryman; and that's how they will make you feel there, as if you were one of them, something that you couldn't find in Bucaramanga, for example. As you will notice if you keep reading, Medellin is not only paisa but a worldwide city, in fact, my best friend told me that some French guys state that going to Medellin is like going to Europe as it embraces many cultures and soon, you will realize that the city is quite developed as the inhabitants have a very futurist vision. The bus ticket from Bucaramanga to Medellin costs 90,000 pesos. Medellin or Medallo, as it is popularly called, is the second ... read more

A small village to enjoy In my continued quest to visit more places in the beautiful Antioquia, I arrived in Sopetran, a locality situated in the West of the region. Located at only 59 kilometres, which is about 90 minutes from Medellin, the city is surrounded by some beautiful villages such as Olaya, San Jerónimo, and Santa Fé de Antioquia. The Church Dominating the park, the huge church appears quite inviting given its peace and quitenes. Inside, some European paintings such as la Inmaculada, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and a spectacular Corazon de Jesús embellish the roof of the temple. What´s there for us to enjoy? The tourist will enjoy the attractiveness of a small village, its nature, fruits and agricultural products. They can also stay at one of the huge haciendas and fincahoteles, which... read more

The Road of the Sun and the Fruit Sticking to my Western travel plan, I arrived in San Jerónimo, a nice agricultural village within the Antioquia´s mountains offering a lovely weather and trying to allow its houses and streets to have architectural significance. The village is part of a tourism plan called the Road of the Sun and the Fruit. The plan includes villages like San Jeronimo, Santafé de Antioquia and Sopetrán and takes tourists to some reknown highlights of these regions such as the Western Bridge, some beautiful churches and places that transport you back to the colonial past. Apparently, there are bililngual guides ready to answer all your questions on the spot. Another Antioquia's paradise With excellent roads, getting to the capital only takes one hour from San Jeronimo. The trip includes crossing the ... read more

Hey Friends, Now it is the time to show you one of the most beautiful counties in Colombia, that is Antioquia. The capital, wow, but people do not actually know all the amazing villages around Medellin, that might leave you flabbergasted. Here I start with some of the rural villages of this lovely department. Puerto Berrío makes me think of the big bridge. at only 4 hours from Bucaramanga, it was the right place to start the visits to Antioquia Why Puerto Berrío? Reading on the net, I found that the name belongs to Pedro Justo Berrío, a former governor of Antioquia (1864-1875) who actually led a rebellion against the opposing party and kept Antioquia within the Colombian Union. As it is located near the Magdalena River, the village played an important role as a port ... read more

A Romantic Town After taking the longest South American tunnel whose crossing cost us 12,400 pesos, we were ready to enjoy the beauty of such a famous destination. For me, the quaint colonial Santa Fe is synonymous with spas and swimming pool areas; I don't know whether it was the tropical climate, the nice breeze or the lush green vegetation of the surrounding mountains, but as soon as I got there I longed for swimming and a suntan. That's right, sometimes, I wonder whether I got the Michael Jackson's change of skin color as I am far from the ''negro" they used to call me... anyways, the sun in Santafe is quite killing and to know that the city offers a large array of spas and big hotels with swimming pools to freshen up is like ... read more

Once in Guatapé... Another beautiful destination for a breath of beautiful fresh air within the lovely Eastern Antioquia; El Peñol, in the Guatape's countryside, depicts spectacular views of serpentine alpine lakes sparkling in the bright sun; there you have it, a chance for you to explore the source of 36% of Colombia´s electricity as well as its majestic surroundings of emerald green fields. Although it is near the town, I decided to do a different entry from that of Guatapé so that you learn why El Peñol, that gigantic boulder, is the town's most-visited site. But what's the fuzz about the Peñol or the Rock? Why a national monument? It consists of a 200 meter massive high rock outcropping that towers over the surrounding area. The formation of this granitic batholith, for some reason, reminds me ... read more

Marinilla, Antioquia As I told you in a past entry, Marinilla was not a first choice from the very beginning but I am glad I finally came as I liked walking and admiring some of the houses that are very colourful. I liked eating breakfast at a nice bakery where I had the chance to sit and relax. I also liked the cold beer in the evening that we drank while we listened to some of the Paisa trovas. Some facts about the village According to what I read in Wikipedia, Marinilla played an important role in the Independence from the Spanish rule as it allowed our country to have lots of its sons to fight against the Spanish, and in this, the village set an example for other nearby villages. But apparently, they were not ... read more

Ready to eat the best deserts ever? San Antonio Another village in the East of Antioquia, San Antonio de Arma de Rionegro is synonymous with deserts, there I was like a child ready to taste those delicious deserts, but do not blame me, their breathtaking deserts made with so much patience and expertise are their best showcase Why San Antonio? It seems that a local found a silver medal from Saint Antonio and for that reason, they started building a chapel . The village is constantly visited by a great number of tourists who come here mainly to get those deserts. It was so funny seeing the large queue, everybody struggling to get a desert. Although I was not able to get a desert at the most popular place -the queue discouraged me as I am ... read more
