Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto Pinochet, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

We took the 2000 peso (it sounds expensive, but the chilean peso is 575 to the dollar) ride from arica to putre, at the entrance to lauca national park. this park is a unesco world heritage site and it is entirely over 4000m (about 13,000ft.) above sea level. the pictures looked really beautiful, so we had to give it a try. we were glad we did. its cooler than a polar bear{s toenail there. we took a 10,000 peso cab from putre to parinacota, a town of literally 17 people. there we got a room with one of the families and [View Full Entry]

After a tiring, but beautiful, hike of the colca canyon, tom and i shared some large beers together atop an arequipa bar and pondered life. i{ll go off on a tangent here, so if you dont{ want to read my meanderings continue on to the next paragraph. I really dig latin america and moreover latin culture. i just feel so at home here. the people of peru and chile have been incredibly kind and helpful to us - further reinforcing my desire to stay in the latin america. so, not only have we seen some beautiful sights, we have met some [View Full Entry]

Before showing you some of the photos I took while at Torres del Paine in Chile, I´ve included a couple a last minute shots of the art market in downtown Coyhaiqie. The weather in Parque Nacional Las Torres del Paine was miserabñe the first two days so I don´t have much in the way of photos. I hope you enjoy the ones that did come out somewhat OK. 15.01.05 Die Nacht im Bus war diesmal nicht so schlimm und wir kamen puenktlich in El Chaltén an.

Carretera Austral South America » Chile
The Carretera Austral is a dirt road that extends for more than 500 miles from Chaiten to Coyhaique. The scenery is stunning and the region some of the wildest countryside I´ve ever passed through. I wish I had been able to stop and take better photos. I took most of these while the van I was riding in was moving. Magnificent Miles! [View Full Entry]

Puerto Montt South America » Chile
Puerto Montt is an important port city in the south of Chile. Although I didn´t take many photos here, I did catch the sun setting on Volcano Villarica. Puerto Montt is the hub for the exportation of the south of Chile´s contraversial salmon farming industry. Below is a discussion of the salmon farming industry by our neighbors from British Columbia. If you bought a salmon fillet in the supermarket recently or ordered one in a restaurant, chances are it was born in a plastic tray in Port McNeill or a place just like it. Instead of streaking through the ocean or [View Full Entry]

Valparaiso is a port city that begs you to explore its winding and hilly streets. The backstreets are filled with the small-town spirit of days gone by. I spent one afternoon just roaming the hills. I was impressed by the friendliness of the people. In these backstreets and hills lies a charm only found in small towns. People actually say hello to you in passing. I stopped to talk with artisits, gals in bakeries and old ladies. Here is a brief history of the city of Valparaiso with photos I took during my stay on January 14th, 2005.
