On saturday I went to Zapallar, a small beach town about 2 hours north of Viņa. It is a ritzier town and the beach was amazingly beautiful. I went with some of the girls here: Carina (my roommate), Amanda and her roommate Jenny and the other girl in my spanish class Autumn. We figured out the correct micro (the small buses we take everywhere) and after a quick stop to buy glue-like sunscreen, wandered our way through town to find the beach finally. Jenny and I got up the courage to brave the frigid ocean and within three minutes we were both numb from the cold. We goofed around with the cameras, laid out in the sun...it was so relaxing and nice to get out of Viņa for the day. During our late lunch at a beachside restaurant we realized we looked like misfits who had stumbled upon a 1950's resort advertisment. All the men and women were dining dressed in old society elegance: huge hats, dainty gloves, gigantic sunglasses and jewelry, jewelry, jewelry. And then there was us...clearly tourists. After lunch we made our way back through town to the bus stop where we ended up waiting over an hour
for the correct micro to pass by. We returned home that night at about 9, a little sun burnt but ready to start the pre-party at our apartment. Unfortunately, I got a bit drunk on the wine we had and didnīt end up going to the club with everyone else later that night (a special thanks to Carina btw:).
Sunday I woke up on the wrong side of my bed on the floor. Everything was just too much and I was really irritated. All I wanted was to go home, just for the day, to get away from it all. I got an offer to go to Santiago for the night and probably should have gone. Everything just sucked: our apartment that never feels clean, the fleas, my broken bed, some cell phone drama from the night before, the construction noise...I donīt want to give anyone the wrong impression, I really do love it here and most every other day make the best of everything and have a really positive attitude. Sunday I just couldnīt. Sarah was feeling somewhat the same way so we started listing off all the things here we loved and eventually decided what would make
us feel better was an american dinner so we made lasagna from scratch. It tasted like home and was exactly what I needed. So by the end of the night I was able to look up at the stars from my balcony and feel thankful to be here and to have such amazing roommates.
Amanda, one of the other girls here has a laptop with her and so I am going over to her place this week to download a bunch of photos finally. She is from Austin, Texas and we have really clicked so I have a friend now to visit in Texas too!
I miss everyone and hope things are going well for you all!!
