Well, I have sucessfully made it to Viña Del Mar! My group and I spent last weekend in Santiago and on Sunday we took a bus ride of only about an hour and a half to Valparaíso, the city adjoining Viña del Mar. That day I met my first host family. They were very nice, but it became clear early on that it was not going to work out. Thankfully, the university I will be attending (which is also in charge of placing students with host families) and the director of my program were very helpful in finding me another host family. I now live in a neighborhood called called "recreo" and it has been a wonderful place to live so far! I have about a 2 minute walk to a great ocean lookout, and maybe ... read more

With changes to the start of our adventure, now well in hand, because of restricted access over the Andes between Chile and Argentina, due to construction work on the Paso Redenter, we will head South to Curico, Chile, for a night and cross over the Andes through Paso Vergara, into Argentina, the next day with our first night in Argentina staying in Malargue. The next day we will ride up to Uspallata, then onto Los Flores and we should be back on schedule. I have made two maps, one heading out of Vina del Mar and getting us up to Machu Picchu in Peru. The other map shows the return route from Cusco back down to Vina del Mar, Chile and the end of the adventure. I hope these work for you, if only one map ... read more

Pažada ... read more

Well more about Sharon’s special memorable greeting by some natives upon arriving in Valparaiso a bit later. Today’s story begins with breakfast at Eurotel, which offered us an ample buffet spread, including scrambled eggs, an egg and sausage soufflé, and very tasty tiny polish style sausages. There was also the typical continental fare, including meats, cheeses, breads and cakes, fruit and cereals. We filled our bellies, having been warned by Yosthon of much walking ahead of us (even more than yesterday). Yesterday would have warranted at least a 3-walker warning on Holland America’s (HAL’s) tour disclosures, so that would mean HAL wouldn’t have a symbol for what was facing us today! Yosthon arrived promptly at ten, along with Hector, our driver for the day. Later we passed Santiago’s Central Station… I’m pretty sure Yosthon mentioned this ... read more

After a couple of days in transit in Santiago we headed down to Vina del Mar to celebrate New Years. Due to an indecisive member of our party we had booked our apartment quite late and therefore the choices were not the best. What we thought was an absolute find for a 2 bedroom apartment a 10 min walk from the beach with ocean views that would comfortably sleep 5 turned out to be a mass of false advertising. Let's just say that we learnt to appreciate our views of the hills and Jonathan and Rommel didn't mind practically sleeping on top of each other THAT much. Although in my head I had pictured a week of relaxing on the beach and our rooftop pool, a thick fog meant that there was no chance of that ... read more

As we had left Bolivia earlier than planned, there was time for some more exploring around Santiago. So we planned a little trip to Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. We decided to sleep, eat and relax in Viña del Mar, a popular somewhat upscale beach town, and visit Valparaiso, port town said to be Chile's cultural capital, on a day trip from there.... read more

Three years today (Nov 11) Coebbie and I have been in love. Unfortunately though I woke feeling less than average but there was no use in sitting in a cave feeling sorry for myself, especially considering how perfect the day was. So we gathered ourselves and caught the metro to Vina Del Mar (or so we thought). There was so much rubbish on the beach and the water was ice cold but Coebbie could not be deterred from taking a quick dip. We spotted something along the beach that people were milling around to take photos of. Sea Lions we think relaxing in the sun underneath an industrial wharf. I was shaking as I took a thousand photos. They were humungous but it was the deep hollow octaves of their bark that really terrified me. There ... read more

We Made it!! and what an adventure and a challenge for all of us and our little 2CV's it turned out to be. We travelled exactly 9,000 kms in our cars and 1,571 kms in the rental van before it got wrecked it in the motorway crash, so we did a total of 10,571 kms. During our two night stay in La Rioja, we met up with a few interesting people that also owned 2CV's, as they are still popular in Argentina. A local dentist named Mauricio, organised the local paper and the local radio to meet with us at 8.00am for interviews and photos. Paul took the cue, and chatted live on their breakfast program, with Mauricio translating as fast as he could, while others chatted with the news paper reporter and posed for photos. ... read more

Yesterday was Easter (Día de Pascua). I went to church with my host family. I was very excited to be able to spend that special day with them. One thing I was NOT looking forward to was the epically long church service. Oh man!! I know I'm an adult with an attention span but I cannot handle it! Church starts at 10:00 and doesn't get out until 2:30!! That's 4 and a half hours!! I'm not used to that. I love going to church. Love it. It's a time for me to hear what God wants to say to me and bond with others in the Body. It's usually such a joy. In the states, I go to this great bible based church. I'm accustomed to having a church service for an hour and a half. ... read more

So here we are in Vina del Mar which was supposed to be the starting point of our adventure, but due to the container arriving a week late, we picked up a rental van and headed North from Santiago up to Tongoy. We then took a day after our stay at Distante in the Pisco Valley and drove up to the Chile/Argentina boarder, as the rental company would not let us cross into Argentina, so we came back and spent the night in an old hotel in Vicuña. The next day we returned to the picturesque fishing village of Tongoy, via Andacolla. On Sunday we did the long drag back down to Vina de Mar. While returning the Van to Santiago, I was involved in a nose to tail smash on the motorway where everyone is ... read more
