Magical Valpo Colorful, wonderful and wild--I was in love with this amazing city! Artful murals cover walls that accompany miles of stairs and occasional funiculars that rise vertiginously from the chaotic waterfront plain of the business district to the city's ubiquitous, peaceful, painted hills. Art is everywhere from the murals, house colors and fluttering laundry to musicians and mimes on street corners and theater groups and puppeteers in the parks. The city was a visual feast, and I took lots of photos on the gloriously sunny and Santa Barbara-like,winter-warm days. However, Valpo, as its known, is also a somewhat dangerous port city. Fortunately, unlike several friends, I was never pickpocketed or scammed, which of course, led to me love the city much more than they. I was there most of June and participated in street ... read more

Classes were supposed to start next Monday but schools all across the country are "en toma" by the Chilean students. They are demanding free education (educar no lucrar). If students in the states tried to do this they would be laughed at. It's not just my university PUCV but schools all across the country including high schools now. So I'm only going to be taking one or two classes with other international students until some sort of diplomacy is reached between the students and the government. Unfortunately the president now is the first right winged president since the dictator Pinochet and although the government is negotiating terms with the students it's unlikely they will reach a mutual agreement. I was assured my classes would start by late August but who knows... I love Viña del Mar ... read more

South America is great!!! I arrived in Chile and and explored (after 1 day jetleg) Santiago. Now I am in Valparaiso (a very cool city) - very colourful, beautiful views and nice/interesting people! The people are very relaxed and enjoy the moment. Today we were on a demonstration against a project of the government, which would destroy a lot of nature. It was crazy - police and military tried to stop the people with water and tear gas, but they/we restisted! Well done! Afterwards I was walking around with my new friends and enjoyed the warm weather. We also had some nice parties and meals together in the last days. Today I was with my friends at the sand dunes ; ) It was so much fun - we were rolling and jumping down the dunes ... read more

Although it´s only on the other side of the andes, chile is surprisingly different to Argentina. It´s infrastructure is really developed and the terrain varies massively from south to north. It ranges from glaciers in the south, to rolling hills covered in cactuses, eventually ending in desert in the north. The people are so much shorter here, I actually feel tall for once. One of our Israeli friends said it actually reminded him of home. Santiago Despite the bad reviews, I felt like I couldn´t visit Chile without a trip to the capital. Admittedly when I first arrived it was everything I´d been told it was. It is far from being the best looking city in the world and it does feel very dodgy. As soon as I got off the bus a lady told me ... read more

Hello All, A quick update from Santigo. Day 1 we took stock of the city. It's vast but one of those places that does not seem to register on on consciousness in the UK. I knew next to nothing about it... We decided that, as we only had a couple of jet lagged days, we'd better get out and do a proverbial sight seing tour on an open topped bus. This actually worked out quite well but just going around the circuit of sights took well over two hours so it was a case of deciding what we wanted to explore more on foot. While there are lots of points of interest, lets be honest, Santiago is not Paris although parts of it could pass for Paris - i.e. the Metro. Built in the 70's, and ... read more

After leaving Santiago i cycled the 120km to Valparaiso and got to the Hostel quite late to meet up with Jake. I cycled part of the way with a Chilian guy who was cycling to Vina del Mar, a few kilometers from Valparaiso, who was telling me about the city. Valparaiso is built into the hillside so has really steep streets with old buildings dotted everywhere. There's also loads of street art everywhere, on the buildings and in the doorways which gives it a really cool vibe and lots of bars/clubs to go to. On my first night there we went to an absinthe bar with some Aussies. It was painted green with green lights and the bar staff show you the technique for drinking absinth with setting the sugar cube on fire and mixing it ... read more

Valparaiso was like they took the good bits of Melbourne, added some excellent street art and stray dogs, took away some hipsters and moody posers in black (leaving enough so there's someone to make the coffee), and stuck it all up and down some steep hills. From cool cats, camouflaged amongst the graffiti, to trendy students, to randoms carrying an obviously scavenged couch up a steep street, hemmed in by brightly coloured row houses. Every alley, every stairway offered some more street art, and the art was of consistently high quality. It's the way of street art, graffiti – whatever you want to call it. Places which try to rub it out inevitably end up with shitty tags and ugly scrawls. In places which let it happen, or even encourage it, the art eventually reaches a ... read more

Valparaiso is a pretty coastal town in east Chile, about an hour and a half from the capital of Santiago. Sarah and I made the journey from Mendoza, through the Andes and arrived in ‘Valpo’ one early afternoon. The city is still one of the most important seaports in Chile, and is increasing in cultural and touristic importance. We spent a few days wandering about the town. The town of Valparaiso is built into and around a series of Cerros, or hills. There are over 40 cerros many of which were equipped with special escalators to help residents move up and down. Today, about 15 historic escalators are still in use – which helped us take a few nice shots of the area. I managed to run up and down a few of the hills as ... read more

This past weekend I went to Valparaíso with a group of students from my university. I needed to get the heck outta Dodge (Santiago) and desperately wanted to see the coast. Valpo, as it's known locally, is beautiful. It's an old port city and the hills are covered with colorful homes. The trip was fine, we left Santiago in the morning and arrived at the coast around noon. After a "typical Chilean" lunch, we visited the home of Pablo Neruda, a famous Chilean poet/diplomat. Neruda's home was truly the highlight of the visit. He purchased it for its views of the city and the harbor. The sea's influence in his life is apparent in his home, and in his work. Neruda has three homes in Chile; in Valparaiso, Santiago and La Isla Negra (which is rumored ... read more
