So my weekends have been pretty fun so far but I am afraid I am spending a bit too much money. Well, when you are a volunteer all money is a bit too much to be spending. Two weeks ago we attended another asado here in Ventanas on Friday and on Saturday of that week we headed out to the campo where Bennett lives to celebrate his host mom's birthday with our 10 gringos and 15 chileans. Because micros (buses) don't run past 9 in the country we were planning on staying the night but I hardly slept since the party went on until 5 am. This included grandma and grandpa. In the end 19 people slpet in a house with 1 bathroom and for this reason I, along with Tang and Chris, got up and ... read more

You may have heard that Charles Darwin sailed on a boat called the HMS Beagle and wound up writing a somewhat controversial book called On the Origin of Species. I once tried reading it and would not recommend it unless you yourself are stuck on a very slow boat sailing across the Atlantic, through the Straits of Magellan, up the coast of South America and then across the Pacific. What is perhaps less well known is that before getting to the celebrated Galapagos, Mr Darwin did a fair amount of putzing around Chile and wondering why there were fossils of ocean critters in the mountains. A few blocks from our house, there is a little hill called Cerro Santa Lucia. Here, Pedro de Valdivia founded the city in the 1500s. The natives would later thank him ... read more

A long, thin country When you look at Chile on a map its strange shape makes no sense. From Arica in the north to Puerto Williams in the south, Chile reaches over 4000km in length. (Interestingly, the official centre of Chile is not just south of Santiago as you might expect, but way down south in Punta Arenas as the official bottom of the country is at the South Pole - Chile takes its Antarctica claims very seriously). This shape makes Chile an ideal country to travel through as you're usually never more than 150 kilometres from the mountains or coast, and when you want to move on you simply head north or south. The Pacific and the Andes are the two constants in this long, thin strip of land containing a variety of landscapes. We've ... read more

After travelling for weeks through relatively rural Chile we found ourselves in Santiago for a few nights. It was quite a culture shock to be in the capital city. We took full advantage of big city delights - cheap internet, going to the cinema and riding the subway! Soon though we were back in another national park (we just can´t get enough of these places) - La Campana, between Santiago and Valparaiso. We were at the park to climb Cerro La Campana (1,980 m), famous as having been climbed by Charles Darwin when he visited in 1834. On our first day at the park the weather seemed to be against us and so we decided to do a different trek hoping for better weather the next day. This was a pleasant hike up through forest and ... read more

Daddy Visits his Girl in South America! South America » Chile » Parque Nacional Campana By ChileOutJune 18th 2007DianaI am a very lucky lass. My wonderful father was able to come down from North Carolina all the way to lil' old Santiago de Chile for a week (NOT enough!) to visit his only daughter. The trip was unforgettably memorable, to say the least (and to be sophisticatedly redundant, yes?). ... read more

At the risk of confusing my readers who are aware that I am currently in the United States I am sending the following entry describing a hike that occurred in Chile during the month of November. Two months ago when I traveled with Simon and Merete to Parque Nacional Campana we hiked halfway to the peak, stopping at La Area de La Mina. We arrived too late in the day to summit so were forced to turn around at that point. I was feeling confident that day, wanting to proceed and make an attempt at the peak. Had I walked around the next bend I may have changed my mind. This time there were no restrictions. As we began the hike it was a cloudy, drizzling day. On a clear day, when you reach the peak, ... read more
