So I have arrived safe and sound despite a long bumpy flight with no sleep. The hostel is nice, its located in a square called Plaza de Armas. I have related it to George square, it has important buildings around it, museums, Presidencial building around the corner and many people come to visit but if you one or blocks in one direction you are not in the best of areas. The first day I arrived I went on a walk to see the Cerro San Cristóbal, a religous statue of a women with her arms open wide. I was told the gondola was there to take me......no it wasn´t working. I ended up going on a pretty intense hike for about 1 hour. When you get to the top and you see the city and the Andes, it´s pretty amazing. Those mountains are sooo big. Because I dont speak Spanish I find it hard to order stuff, yesterday all i wanted was a cup of tea.... I couldn´t find one anywhere. I wasn´t happy as you can imagine (some of you know what i am like when i am hungry). I then found a Cafe in the mall and I found what I thought was tea on the menu, the only other thing I could understand was brownie a la mode.....once I ate that, the world was a better place. After my new mood arrived I went on a hop on hop off bus and it took me all around Santiago. There are some really nice areas out there (I found Starbucks). Last night I went to a Salsa club with some people I met here at the hostel. it was fun and amazing to see so many men dancing, just becuase they wanted to dance. When we walked in I thought it was something out of dirty dancing, they were all doing the same dance at the same time. It didn´t happen again as I wanted to to get it on video. Its Monday morning and I am going to check out the orphanage this afternoon so i am excited about that.

hi G, glad to hear all is okay, Hiking and Salsa club already - very cool - it sounds so exciting - men dirty dancing - ooooo I mean The Andes! Looking forward to the next installment, Thinking of you. Jx
Hope it all went well at the orphanage today. Great to hear you are having a good time, Salsa, dancing men, brownies? I wish i was there ive been checking out things to do in Chile, looks like you need to stay at least another month to do them all. Do want me to send teabags... I can send them if you get desperate.
keep us all updated, love Aimx
just an fyi, chile is the leading tea consuming country in the western hemisphere. chileans drink tea at home all the time, and 5pm is "once" (elevenses, or tea time for chileans). chile is the only country with a tea time, so i'm shocked you were unable to find tea since it's a standard beverage. for future reference "té" is tea in spanish (it's cha in portuguese). enjoy your time in santiago and chile. i recommend you try "paila marina" (a seafood stew), "pastel de choclo" (like a shepherds pie, but with corn instead of potato), and empanadas (turnovers).
¡cheers!
.....Robbie doesn't believe men want to dance together....so he is calling Bull puckey on the salsa club. "All we want to do is dance"....says John Lightfoot!....
We all say hi and blow you kisses...hope things are going well.
I think of you frequently and your amazing experience!
Take care of yourself and don't forget to wash your hands.
Lots of love, Jennifer
Glad to hear your safe. i know that was a cheapshot about the men dancing(apparently they don't here). Miss you lots. Have fun and be careful.Don't drink as much as your aunt Linda.
Hi Gillian,
Sounds like it's been good so far. Please write a bit about the orphanage now that you have seen it. What do you think you'll be doing day to day? What beautiful things have you seen with the children or staff? Do you feel welcomed? My good thoughts are with you.
Suzanne
Your comment "you might have fallen in love today" is UNACCEPTABLE. You can't make a comment like that and leave us all hanging on.
How is the orphanage. You are due to give us an update.......
