Voordat we vandaag uitchecken uit ons hotel Australis, Puerto Natales, komt de man van het autoverhuurbedrijf Southland onze auto brengen. Nadat alle papieren getekend zijn gaan we op pad: onze eerste stop is bij Cueva del Milodon. Dit is een diepe grot waar men resten van een onbekende/uitgestorven diersoort hebben gevonden: de Milodon, hebben ze hem gedoopt. Dan rijden we door naar Nationaal Park Torres del Paine, maar helaas voor ons… we moeten omrijden want ze zijn met een stuk van de weg bezig. Vanochtend eerst uitslapen (in ieder geval Silvia: na zo’n rum-domino avond…) en rond 10 uur meren we af in Puerto Natales, het eindpunt van onze ‘cruise’ met Navimag. We hebben weer vaste grond onder onze voeten! Na het inchecken in ons hotel Australis (met uitzicht op de boot) verkennen we een beetje het stadje Puerto Natales. En omdat iedereen van de boot hier ook blijft overnachten (verspreidt over diverse hostals) komen we in het stadje bijna iedereen tegen. Vannacht de Pacifistische Oceaan achter ons gelaten en via de Golfo de Penas varen we het Canal Mesier binnen. Rond 10 uur varen we langs Isla Van Der Meulen om rond middaguur langs het Cotopaxi wrak te varen. Ergens in de 1800e eeuw is er een schip gestrand op de ondiepte van Canal Mesier. In de jaren 1970 dacht een Griekse kapitein dit ook te doen, maar dan om verzekeringsgeld op te strijken à het Griekse Cotopaxi wrak. After a long bus ride to Rio Gallegos from Puerto Madryn, then after a quick trip to the town, another bus to Punta Arenas. We split from ben so we could do some penguin spotting before seeing some glaciers, and he had plenty of time because he´s taking a boat back up to Puerto Montt. After finding a great hostel (hostel independencia) we headed to the Zona Franca, which is like a massive duty free mall, this port being one of the southernmost in the world so a stopping point for boats not taking the panama canal. Nach den Tagen auf unserem knallroten Navimag-Boot erkunden wir nun Patagonien auch auf dem Land - leider nur teilweise im gewohnten Dreier-Team, da Sandras Knie noch keine grossen Wandertouren zulaesst. Nichtsdestotrotz warten auf alle von uns einige erlebnisreiche Tage in Chiles schoenstem Nationalpark Torres del Paine, den wir zu Fuss und mit dem Jeep erkunden. Am Samstag machen wir uns - noch zu viert, denn Judith muss erst am Sonntag zurueck nach Santiago fliegen - auf zu den Torres, dem Wahrzeichen des Parks. Nach zwei Tagen auf der Isla Chiloe kehren wir nach Puerto Montt aufs Festland zurueck - doch nur fuer kurze Zeit, denn bereits einige Stunden spaeter geht es los auf grosse Fahrt: Mit dem Schiff quer durch Patagonien!!! Da sich die Abfahrt um einige Stunden verzoegert, statten wir dem kleinen Staedtchen - insbeondere dem Fischmarkt - einen kurzen Besuch ab, sonnen uns am Nachmittag auf dem Deck des Schiffes und geniessen die Aussicht auf die Bucht von Puerto Montt. We spend our first aftenoon in Peurto Natales, Chile, trying to sort out excursions and things to do for the next couple of days. We are hoping to catch a ferry on the 1st July that will take us up the coast of Chile, navigating its way through glaciers and icebergs, so once again time is a bit of an issue. Or perhaps not. It only took us about 4 hours to get to El Calafate….getting us there around 9pm. We checked into a hostel and then gathered some dinner and snacks for the next day. We met some people at the hostel that had rented a car for the next day and had room for 1 person….we decided that for a 1 hour drive….we could sit on one another’s lap in the car in order to make a cheap drive.
