Los Lagos Travel Blogs

Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador ALLENDE was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto PINOCHET, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

Puerto Eden
Puerto Eden
A remote settlement amongst the fjords and inlets of Southern Patagonia
Cruising the Chilean Fjords The first weekend of the New Year found us crusing Chilean fjords on a 3 day, 1500 km journey from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. North of Puerto Natales the road runs out as Chilean Patagonia becomes an impenetrable mix of fjords, glaciers and mountains. We had to choose between flying from Punta Arenas, going by bus via Argentina or sailing through the hundreds of fjords and islands that make up this part of Chile. An easy choice! We boarded in Natales at midnight on a Friday night, 3 hours late, giving us 3 hours to play [View Full Entry]

Now that we are about half way through this trip we can honestly say that we are enjoying blundering our way through Chile!!!! (It is possible that this is due to the fact that our transportation woes have not been as great as they were at the beginning of the trip!!). We have the next several hundred miles of transport booked and barring the possibility that I got tickets for the wrong day or the wrong time we should be back in Chillan on Monday morning. Wow we had a whole day today without a bus!! Wow usually we are on [View Full Entry]

A clear day in Pucon!!!!
Today we head to Puerto Montt. That will be new territory for both of us. Pucon has been fine but we both have this feeling that it is like the "Jackson Hole" of Chile. There are plenty of fine places close at hand but the town itself is a little too touristy for us. So as it turns out our tickets are for 15:45 pm, so that means we will have to hang out a little longer here. So we got sweet cherries and humitas (I think humitas must be sort of the Chilean equivalent of lutefisk!!!! they are like a [View Full Entry]

Please refer to the last blog (Santiago) as we have added pictures to it, finally! We left Santiago on the 18th and took a short flight to Puerto Montt (South of Santiago), then a short bus trip to a small village on Lake Llanquihue. Our hotel over looked the lake with a view of two snow capped volcanoes. The following morning we were picked up by bus to start our Andean Lake Crossing tour to get to our next destination in Argentina. We crossed through the Andes from the Pacific Coast to the interior of Argentina. It took three bus rides [View Full Entry]

Once we arrived in Puerto Montt we headed out to find some tucker and ended up in a fishing village called Angelmo. All these ladies come up to you and try to convince you to eat at their restuarant. So we followed this lady who promised us a traditional Chilean meal of gurante (not sure on the spelling sorry). It has all different meats in it and is cooked in a stew with potatoe and mussels. It was quite delicious and to top it off, the restuarant (which can fit 10 people max) was situated on the waterfront and we got [View Full Entry]

Summary in English: There is also a volcan Osorno in the Chile, not just a town Osorno. So we decided to have a closer look at this volcano as well. We travelled through Puerto Varas to a small village Petrohue situated just next to this volcano. It is a beautiful place on the lake. There are very nice waterfalls Petrohue as well with wonderful view on the volcano. We spent there a night in a family camp and had a nice smoked trout for a dinner :) Kedze sme tolko casu stravili v Osorne, tak sme sa rozhodli pozriet si aj [View Full Entry]

What a beauty!
I spent more time in Lake Country, Argentina than planned. Now I am faced with yet another decision. And I hate decisions! Do I drive to Chile even though I will only have 3 days, 3 nights or chill more here in Lake Country, Argentina. It is only one hour over the border, but then I will have nothing new to see. To go somewhere cool and different, I am getting mixed reviews from the locals as to the length of time to drive, sounds like 6-7 hours to Puerto Varras or Puerto Montt, then 5-6 hours back to Bariloche to [View Full Entry]

We found a nice accomodation with TV in Osorno, bought pack of red wine and watched TV until midnight. After that we made a trip trough deep south american rainforest to a place called Thermas de Callao, but it was rainy the whole day we stayed there, so we spent the time in the tent. Termas de Callao are two small wooden bathtubs, which are locked behind a door of a small shed. The key for that shed is 40 minutes away (after having a bath you maybe have to return the keys the same way :). On the way back [View Full Entry]

Summary in English: We arrived in Osorno, small town, but lots of small markets and lots of people. We moved after few hours to a camp about 90 km away in mountains. There we were all alone :) Next day we made a nice (but L O N G) trip to the place called Pampa Frutilla - a very nice spot. We pitched our tent on a snow (very good experience) and had a beautiful morning. Z Puconu sme prisli do Osorna. Osorno vyzera skor ako velky trh, vsade stanky, clovek aby sa prebijal ked chce prejst. No a kde je [View Full Entry]
