Background: Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians inhabited central and southern Chile; the latter were not completely subjugated until the early 1880s. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-84), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern lands. A three-year-old Marxist government of Salvador ALLENDE was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto PINOCHET, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.

Cruising

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt

Eilisiltana lahdin viela kaymaan lahibaarissa enka paassyt sen pidemmalle. Yhdessa poydassa pelattiin shakkia. Jain katsomaan pelia ja paasin sitten itsekin pelaamaan. Voitin useimmat pelini. Eilen olin pohtinut sita olisinko ostanut 12000 pesolla pakettimatkan kansallispuistoon. En ostanut. Tuli nukuttua pitkaan ja vasta klo 12:n jalkeen paasin bussiasemalle. Klo 12.30 lahti bussi kansallispuistoon Cucaon lahelle. Ostin lipun siihen.

Kahvia tuli juotua taas tana aamuna. Eilisiltana oli hyva tilaisuus taas tarkkailla etelaista tahtitaivasta. Tunnistan jo Etelan Ristin, Kentaurin, Kölin ja Purjeen tahdistot. Vein pyykit pesulaan. Poikkesin puukirkossa. Tulin katsomaan nettiini chilelaisliittymani saldoa. Nakojaan ulkomaan viestit ovatkin kalliita, joten enpa enaa lahettele niita. Soin runsaan lounaan ja hain pyykit pesulasta, hintaa tuli 2400 pesoa, siis [View Full Entry]

Saaressa

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Chiloé Island
Sattumalta paikallinen kirjasto tuli vastaan [View Full Entry]

Fri 2/15/08 I can’t believe this trip is all but over. It’s been as good if not better than I expected and though I originally thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip I’m pretty sure I’ll be back if I’m able to in a few years. There’s just so much worth seeing again and lots of things I didn’t have time for in one trip. Antarctica was of course spectacular and my main reason for the trip but South America was much more of a surprise. Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay are not the third world countries most of us expected and [View Full Entry]

Järven rannalla

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas
Marcelo lahti toihin. Macarena lahti kayttamaan minua Puerto Varasissa.

Ilta vietettiin sitten Alercen lahiossa. Alerce on suomeksi lehtikuusi. Alue muistutti vahan Tampereen asevelikylaa, siella oli pientaloja toisensa peraan. [View Full Entry]

Volcan Osorno
Volcan Osorno
Puerto Varas
I arrived in Puerto Montt mid afternoon and catch a bus straight to the small town of Puerto Varas about 30min away. Every summer, this staid and manicured former German colony is besieged by visitors (international backpakers and chilians alike). This quant little town is set on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, and on a clear day you have arresting lake views of Volcan Osorno. While the town is rapidly growing and there are possibilities to hike, kayak, fish and ski, it still remains a sleeply little town, and has a long way to go to match Argentina´s Bariloche. I only [View Full Entry]

Fire! Fire!
Fire! Fire!
As everyone was treating the fire like a spectator sport, I didn't feel bad about taking photos
My next stop was Ancud, on the island of Chiloe. The island itself is very different from mainland Chile, geographically anyway - the website for one of the hostels I've stayed at described the landscape as being like that of the Shire in Lord of the Rings. The main industry in the island is fishing, and where there's fishing there are usually lots of seafood restaurants...so I admit my reasons for visting were motivated by my stomach as much as anything else! One the first day I was there, I just spent the day wandering the town and the surrounds. Slightly [View Full Entry]

As of February the 8th, I officially have the disease! Travel Fever, Mile High Addict, Perpetual Motion Sickness, call it what you want....I have it! I had a very early morning flight from BA to Santiago, Chile and when I landed a too few two hours later, I had absolutely no idea how I wanted to spend my 7 days in Chile. I knew that i had to come back to Santiago at the end of my trip (in order to fly back to LA) so my only idea was....go north or south. I glanced through the Chilean guidebook at the [View Full Entry]
