1st day on Navimag, we checked in at 9pm we all got herded to the ship, rooms got sorted out and an orientation in the lounge room then off to bed,my roomies are David from Switzerland and British docotor,Simon who just volunteered for Doctors without borders in Chad and Niger.
The next morning woke up to use the toilet see some beautiful colors in the sky, nice sunrise i thought, went back to bed when i got up it was gloomy and rain is starting, windy as well. breakfast was ok and lunch we had salmon. chicken for dinner ,not bad . Documentaries and occasional movies keeps us entertained. weather has not been perfect but we tried to make the most of it. made lots of friends, most from the Torres del Paine trek.Truckloads of cattle in the boat, that explains the loads of hay we saw on the night we checked in.
On our 2nd night played cards with Corey, Chris, Simon and a Chileno, played poker til past midnight then off to bed.Watched a few documentaries and some movies. Weather is not good again, rain and lots of wind so spent most of the day talking to people. had
my 1st shower in the boat nice hot water. We got drunk that night and the conversation got ugly Chris and Coreyand Simon were hilarious I cant talk about what transpired that night too controversial.Jo the irish dude tried to fix the virus in my computer with no luck.
Then the next morning weather is bad, raining hard then improved a bit later we went outside and took a photo of the cattle in the front of the boat, so in case we get aground we wont starve to death. we visited the captain's deck, quite interesting, we will get to the exposed part of the journey we got out to sea and they expect a swell of 4 meters, not bad, everyone was warned to take motion sickness tablets so I did, and after lunch the boat started rocking we are in the open sea, got worse and worse and at dinner only a handful turned up. Chris and I were the 1st in the queue, he finished his meal and went back to his cabin while I stuck around with Corey for a bit to digest the spaghetti I just ate, Corey was in bad shape and
trying not to to throw up. Went to bed and had the best sleep in a long long time, dramamine helped as it made me drowsy. It stopped rocking about 1amish and we all slept well.
Gloomy again today but not raining, everyone turned up for breakfast.
Our last night on the boat was bingo night, i struggled to the lounge for dinner, the boat started rocking again earlier and i took another dramamine so i am a bit drowsy, after a good meal of fish(salmon) the fun begins, we have to buy the bingo cards at roughly $1.50 each, the game was fun but did not win in the end, good thing because when you collect your price you have to dance in front of everyone! The prices include souvenir hats and wine. Good to fuel some more our drinking. I begged off after a quite a few cups of wine courtesy of Simon and the crazy American boys, Corey and Christian stayed much later to finish the whisky and then some more from the other table, i left them past midnite. The Japanese dude who was drinking with us fell asleep while sat with us and Corey
took a photo with my camera as he has his hands down his pants passed out, quite funny.Struggled to sleep it was too hot in the cabin.
The boat arrived in Puerto Montt 5am and we had breakfast at 7:30am after that began the process of disembarkation. We left our backpacks in the Navimag office and decided to walk the town for half day and get to Puerto Varas after lunch. We said goodbyes to our fellow Navimag passengers, and saw off in their bikes the hilarious duo of Christian and Corey. We went to the bus station to check on bus schedules to Varas and strolled around and found an internet then tried to find the fish market , there is a cruise ship anchored so the town is a bit busy, but at the fish market there hardly was anyone so we got harassed by people forcing us to eat at their restaurants, we kept saying "mas tarde" . We checked out the array of seafood on sale, quite a big variety that got me so excited for lunch, Luke and I waited for Simon but he did not turn up so we went upstairs on
the 2nd floor and tried to find a decent place to eat. We sat at a little cozy corner and not 1 minute later the trio of Simon, Christian and Corey turned up as if knowing where we were and indeed they asked around for an Asian guy(me) and they got pointed to our direction.
I had steamed mussels and crab entry, the mussels were so so but the crab was good, i was thinking of trying the sea urchins as we saw them being prepared in the market but chickened out in the end. We saw also fish being scaled and prepared fillets off from, they work very quickly quite impressive to watch them work. Had coffee/tea to kill time and then walked to the Navimag office to pick up our backpacks, the reception is busy as the boat leaves for Natales at 2:30pm. We walked to the bus station and soon we are on our way to Varas, said our(hopefully) final goodbye to Chris and Corey who saw us off. Half an hour later we are in Varas and found a place to stay called Margouya, nice cool place next to the waterfront but they only have
room for us tonite tomorrow is fully booked so we thought of going to another place tomorrow. We met Jo the Irish dude who was trying to fix the virus in my computer, he is staying there as well. We all decided to head to Pucon tomorrow as we have seen much of the town in one afternoon, nice and pleasant i can stay for more but since I need to move accomodations i decided to go with Simon and Jo to Pucon. Luke will head slowly to Bariloche. Went to shop for dinner a to go with the crab legs i bought at Puerto Montt fish market for $12 huge pile of crab legs, I am in heaven!! I cant finish it so I gave it to the boys, well served them dinner because Luke and Jo were trying to fix the virus in my computer. Not as cold here as in Natales cloudy but no rain and we saw a glimpse of Volcan Osorno briefly, hopefully tomorrow early am we can see the top before we depart for Pucon, hoping for the best.
Luke got locked out of his room and took ages to open his door
and reception is gone. Our roomie a grumpy middle aged English man kept asking me to turn the lights off in the room, shut the door, please be quiet, maybe he should have not stayed in a dorm. the next morning we saw bunch of high school American kids in the hostel, they were the ones who booked the place for the weekend, goodluck to the grumpy English lad.
