Volcan Osorno

Not a bad view for breakfast.
I was up early (I think mainly thanks to the large bag of dried fruits I ate last night) and had a scrummy breakfast enjoying the views out the dining room window to Volcan Osorno which looms above the town.

I was off on the bike by around 8.30am and it was a pleasant mornings ride to Puerto Varas, 46km away. Passed a group of about 15 cyclists strung out over a kilometer or two as I was coming into Puerto Varas. They all had the latest cycling gear and these nice small handle bar bags with their gear for the day. Somebody else must have been carting all their other gear. Lucky things.

I found Chrisite at Casa Azul, a very cool hostel, we had Pizza for lunch, and headed off to Puerto Montt by bus to check out the ferry schedules. Turns out that Navimag no longer runs ferry´s to Chaiten, however another compnay now runs a ferry there from Puerto Montt 2 or 3 times a week, and also one from Quellon, at the Southern end of Chiloe, twice a week ... Wednesday and Sunday at noon. The cost was the same for both 16000 pesos

for a person, and 7000 pesos each for the bikes.

We decided to take our luck with turning up in Quellon and buying our tickets with the general aim of spending a lazy week meandering down to Quellon for the Sunday ferry allowing Christie's knee to recover.

We ate in for a change, chatted to lots of interesting people in the hostel and generally had a very mellow evening. We somehow managed to get the only room on the third floor ... this is becoming a bad habit.

I´m Tasmanian and that probably explains a lot. I also love to travel, particularly by bike ... I´ve somehow survived cycling through England, Scotland, Ireland (though someone did steal my bike in Sligo which put an end to that), New Zealand, South Africa, South America and even Vietnam. OK, Vietnam was a cycling story without a bike and a clear demonstration of why, if you should ever be tempted, you shouldn't play touch football on an icy oval 30 minutes before the sun rises on a cold Tasmanian morning two days before heading off on an overseas holiday. So this time's it's Europe... full info
