Puerto Varas and Area
View from our Hotel bedroom window in PV of Lake Llanquihue PV has been our base for a couple of days, but apart from the views of the mountains and Lake Llanquihue it is really only a staging post for the trips through the lakes and the mountains and volcanos. There is nothing else remarkable about it although it presents itself as the tourist centre of Patagonia north.
At breakfast in the hotel we bumped into our ex GP from Ponteland - Dr Anthony Kay plus wife who were on a Patagonian tour. Double takes all round
Having 'done 'the Town in a couple of hours we invested €1 on one of the many local mini buses for the 20km trip to Puerto Montt. This turns out to be the staging post for the cruise ship market and their trips to the mountains, lakes and volcanoes too. It has a strong German influence with a German Club and many restaurants and shops offering a German style menu.
So another €1 was invested for a local bus trip to Frutillar on Lake LLanquihue. This is an absolute peach of a little lakeside town - almost all German in character from the buildings to the restaurants and shops. It is a

The sea front at Puerto Montt picture postcard location and a boasts a theatre and an excellent shoreside beach. This called for a cafe and kuchen occasion - not an unwelcome treat!
Having mastered the local buses we pressed on to see some other lakeside towns before heading back to PV - a great day but ended up a bit frazzled by the sunshine.
Next stop is Santiago de Chile
