I really feel like chilling out at the moment. The grand island of Chiloé appears to be exactly the right spot to pursue that goal, since it's not hard to get around here, not too touristy, but has lots to offer to keep you interested for a couple of easygoing days. the Chilote culture is very different to Chilean culture, and it's quite unique in a sense that mythology plays a very important role in the life of the islanders. The traditonal folklore involves some strange creatures, like Brujos, warlocks with black-magic powers, who try to corrupt and harm the unsuspecting Chiote people, Cai-Cai Vilú and Ten-Ten Vilú, the Serpent God of the Water and Earth, respectively, struggling against each other for supremacy over the domain, and Trauco, a repugnant yet powerful forest gnome who can ... read more

The Chiloe archipelago is the northernmost part of the frayed edge of Chile, that tattered jumble of islands and fjords that starts south of Puerto Montt and continues for nearly 3,000km down to Cape Horn. The blending of local and Spanish traditions has resulted in an identity different from that of the mainland, with the rural feel and beach-free nature of the islands keeping tourist numbers down. With home for me being in a coastal area of the UK with inclement weather and a fishing industry, it was going to be interesting to see if any other parallels could be drawn. Rain was to be something of a constant during my stay in the archipelago, and indeed it's viewed as part of the appeal of the region. I based myself in Castro, centrally located on the ... read more

Let me start by thanking everyone that was kind enough to remember my birthday. It was an unforgettable event in an incredible locale. I woke up at 5 AM, which is 4 AM by my body clock, on Thursday, April 10th (Happy Birthday, Diane!) to get to the bus station in time for my 6:30 departure. Despite the early arrival of my cab, there were a few moments of tension trying to figure out how to unlock the front door from the inside. In the dark. Without waking up my housemate and la tia, both sleeping in their bedrooms a few feet away. After digging out my house key and discovering the flashlight feature on my cell phone, I made it, and the most difficult part of my adventure was past. The bus to Puerto Montt ... read more

Hola todos, The Island of Chiloe saw us travelling in the company of Christian and Marij for much of the way. Amidst the grey skies we tried our hand at hitch hiking again - this time with much more success. The local chiloteans were very accommodating and gave us quite a few lifts to various corners of the island. Chiloe was quite a different landscape to where we have been used to with few mountains and wide pastures, little towns with wooden churches and lots of shingles on their houses. Throughout our trip across the island we amassed around 50 different shingle photos as somewhat of a collectors habit to amuse ourselves in the sleepy little towns. The towns themselves consisted of usually one of the famous or if your just a small town less famous ... read more

Day 172: Buses, Planes and Boats, and the final destination; well, who knows!? "We've gone on holiday by mistake", Withnail, in 'Withnail and I' So here I am, in a random town called Ancud on the Chiloe islands in the South of Chile. To be honest, I didn't actually mean to come here, but was heading a couple of hours further south. Unfortunately things got a bit delayed earlier in the day, and I didn't fancy arriving too late in Castro (my intended destination further south), since I didn't have a map or lodgings, so I got off the bus in Ancud (without accomodation or a map, but at least it was only eight o'clock). The day had started quite well in Punta Arenas, with a hot shower and a hearty breakfast cooked by the hostel ... read more

Chiloe, an island off the coast of Chile is promoted as being a tranquil, undeveloped and beautiful island with a country feel and a very strong and interesting culture. One of the hostels we were looking forward to staying in was promoted in our lonely plant book, and a travel brochure as being a seaside hostel in a beautiful coastal town (Chonchi) with a friendly host that took you on tours of his seafood farm and occasionally cooked big meals from that day's harvest. He had bikes, boats and fishing gear to rent, centrally heated rooms and hot water. The island lived up to the promotion a little more than the hostel. I was a little let down by the island though and very let down up the hostel. Still, it was still an interesting experience ... read more

I went to the island of Chiloé (Chee-low-ay) hoping to find few tourists, peace, quiet, and time to read, write and meditate. Well, I certainly found it. After a 17 hour bus ride, I arrived to an island with beautiful landscapes and quiet seaside villages. As soon as I got there, I wandered around the city of Castro, Chiloé´s largest city. The island is known for its culture of wooden architecture, especially its churches. I visited Castro´s church and was very impressed how beautiful it was. It was definitely unique. Since I was alone, I had an amazing amount of liberty and was quite indecisive as to what to do. I knew that I wanted to accomplish a little sightseeing while finding places to relax throughout the journey. I decided to head to the least visited ... read more
