Today was the first morning we had to set an alarm as our flights were at 09:30. Michele and I both are early risers, and there was NO way I would miss my flight to Easter Island! wootwoot! Vladimir picked us up for the last time and he and Mauricio drove us to the airport. Chile has not decided if a flight to Easter Island is Domestic or International (go figure) so Vlad came inside with us as checking in for these flights is a challenge. The self check in kiosks didn't work with our tickets, but the agents kept sending us away, so thankfully Vlad helped us out. He was told we would go through international, meaning my bottle of wine (grin) in my carry on could not be brought through security, but we got ... read more

Day 8 - Morning came to another fine chorus of chickens a doole-dooing. Disappointingly our cunning plan to eat as much chicken for breakfast, dinner and tea had not turned out to be as cunning a plan as one of Baldrick's. This was our last morning and Russ had remembered reading something about getting your passport stamped at the post office. So in a quick bid to do a last minute shop and to see if there was any substance behind Russ's claim we packed up our bags before heading off into town. We located the post office and proffered our passports at the girl behind the counter. She showed us a picture of four different stamps, explaining that the plainest of the four was free, and that if we wanted any of the others, it ... read more

Day 7 - Easter Island by bike The day dawned brightly, and it was clearly going to be another hot one. We were surprised we were not more stiff after yesterday's exursions. Armed with our ham and cheese from the fridge, and plenty of sun cream, we gingerly got back on the bikes. We stopped at the mini market for bread and water, and made our way across town to the Museum. We had heard that it housed one of the only examples of a female Moai, so didn't want to miss the opportunity to see it. The museum had a full english translation of all the exhibits and panels of information, and there was quite a lot to see in a small space. As we made our way out towards the coast and Tahai again, ... read more

Day 6 - Easter Island by bike When we woke up to the chicken chorus it was nice to see they'd given us a lie in until around 7.00. The sun was shining and it promised to be a nice day. Over breakfast we formulated our plan for the day before donning our cycling gear and setting off. Whilst there were no helmets provided, they did give us a spare inner tube, pump and tyre lever for emergency repairs. We firstly headed down towards the seafront, and to see Hanga Roa Otai and further along the coast to Tahai where there is a good example of a boat shaped house and the Moai has eyes (the only one on the island). These are not the original eyes but it does give you a good idea what ... read more

Day 5- Our first full day on Easter Island greeted us with the sound of cockral's cock-a-doodle doing , nice you're probably thinking, not at half five in the morning it wasn't. Breakfast was served on our little terrace on a tray around half past eight, and consisted of cheese, ham, hot water for a brew, juice and one of the flat scone/breads they seem to serve with everything. We collected things together and decided to pack jumpers and macs as the weather looked changeable, and walked to the tour company round the corner to pick up the tour. It is also windy a lot of the time on the island, adding to the unpredicatable nature of the weather. We had to go and collect the rest of the group from their hotels which meant a ... read more

Day 4 - Easter Island (Isla de Pascua/Rapa Nui) Our day started early, with the alarm going at 6.30am, which as we only got in after midnight from eating the night before seemed very early. We had a quick breakfast, and packed the rest of the bags. Luckily, the hotel said we could leave some of our luggage with them, so we jetisoned our big jackets, thermals and boots, so we could make some room for purchases! On our way to the airport, we saw someone using a bit of enterprenerial spirit - someone at a junction on a 6ft tall unicycle juggling for tips. At the airport, our guide showed us to the queue we needed, and we checked in. There did not seem to be any limit on the number of bags to be ... read more

Its Groundhog Day!!! We left Auckland at 14.00 Thursday, crossed the dateline, arrived in Papeete for our change over flight to Easter Island and arrived in Easter Island at 8.30am Thursday morning. Gained an entire day and a half! From here on too, if Shane has anything to add (or put a different spin on) he will! Our host, Jerome, met us at the airport and took us back to his B & B where we met a French couple, Sabine and Jean Luc, and we immediately took off on a half day tour. Our bus gingerly made its way up and down the corrugated roads toward the peak of the Rano Kau volcano – its crater lake is a cauldron of reeds. This is where the bird cult rituals were performed. We were dropped back in to town where we paid $20 for the crappiest sandwiches and coffee we have ever had in our lives – it was like they had been sitting on a bench in the open all day. The coffee was just as bad. My “cappuccino” was a black coffee with froth on top! That’s right, let’s go to all the trouble of making froth and not put any milk in it! There is a gorgeous ocean rock face right across the road from Chez Jerome that is so spectacular! The caves are accessible by day, however on sunset the tide comes crashing mercilessly in to shore and fills the caves. The water is the most beautiful aqua colour. I could sit here for hours. It is so loud and yet so tranquil. Shane ... read more
