I can't believe that I finally made my way to Easter Island after dreaming about it for almost 10 years...
Even though I booked my flight about a month before taking off it was not so sure whether this flight was going to happen or not. The first news I heard after the fatal terremoto was that the whole island had been evacuated because of the tsunami danger. At this moment I was pretty sure that I had to cancel my Easter Island dream - at least for this time.
The news two days later were better: Apparently they had not evacuated the island but only the coastline...but Santiago airport was damaged and nobody knew if and which flights would be operated. And one week before my flight came the big release: My connection from Santiago to Easter Island was going to happen but I was given an extra day on the island as LAN changed my backflight from March 17th to March 18th. YIPPIIIIIIIIEEEEEE!!!
But what happened two days before my final take-off was another earthquake (I was actually standing on top of the Villarica volcano when it happened...) and I buried my dream for the second
time. Okay, no Easter Island for me this time.
However, one day before the take-off I got the news that my flight was still on despite the earthquake the previous day. And the unbelievable thing happened: Finally I was sitting in the plane and we left Santiago behind...to go to the most wonderful island in the world: Rapa Nui!
And it was even better than my sweetest dreams could have been.
