Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

28.05.05 Irgendein idiotischer Angestellter weckte mich schon um 04.30 Uhr. Er machte auch die Gebaerdensprache wie der andere Typ. Ich dachte ich muesste schon fruehstuecken, doch es schliefen noch alle. Ich sagte ihm das, doch er weckte mich zwei Minuten spaeter nochmals auf die gleiche Weise. Das etwa viermal. Ich fragte ihn, ob er ein bisschen durchgeknallt sei, dann zischte er ab. Natuerlich konnte ich nicht mehr richtig schlafen. Toll, nun konnte ich bis 06.30 Uhr warten aufs Fruehstueck. Greetings to my family, friends, and colleagues. This is my/our last night in Sao Paulo before flying to Salvador, Bahia in the morning. I am exhausted mentally and physically but so exhilirated at the same time. Woke up not knowing the time, but the sun was up so headed out. Headed straight back when I saw it was 5:45 am! Bugger! Back to sleep. 21.05.05 Nach dem Fruehstueck vertrieb ich die Wartezeit noch mit lesen, aber die abgemachte Zeit um 09.00 Uhr war schon laengst vorbei. Um 09.30 Uhr fragte ich mal an, wo das Auto blieb. Der eine Typ lief mit mir im Zentrum umher um nachzufragen. Irgendwann hiess es, dass sie mich gegen 11.30 Uhr in der Posada abholen wuerden. Ich ging nochmals schlafen, das Personal weckte mich, als das Auto ankam. Wir fuhren mit einem 4WD zuerst etwa zwei Stunden bis nach Rio Novo. 14.05.05 Ich wachte schon frueh auf, ging ja schliesslich auch frueh ins Bett. Nach dem Fruehstueck lief ich gleich zum Miramar, denn Philippe meinte, ich solle doch um etwa 08.30 Uhr dort sein fuer den Bootstrip. Ich war schon ein bisschen frueher dort und wartete. Ich dachte, ein Bootstrip hat feste Zeiten und dass sie diesmal puenktlich sind. Doch als ich um 08.45 Uhr Philippe wecken liess, meinte er nur, dass er kein Fruehstueck wolle und dass er nicht rauskomme. Mann, das machte mich nun echt sauer, Anstand gleich null! 07.05.05 Wir kamen frueher als erwartet in Salvador an, bereits um 05.45 Uhr. Ich verabschiedete mich von Sebastian und Anval. Dann lief ich durch das halbe Busterminal, um etwas abzuklaeren. Das Touristoffice hatte leider noch nicht offen, deshalb hatte ich auch keine Ahnung wo ich genau bin und wohin ich muss. Ich fragte jemanden, wo ich den Bus zum Barrio Graça nehmen koenne, das klappte schon mal. Aber die genannte Strasse kannte leider niemand im Bus.
