Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

phase 1 of our adventure is coming to an end as we have now decided that we will be leaving this tropical paridise on Monday! but its been amazing here! Here are our diaries from the last few days 12th July - Dom´s We wake up early and robby fixes us breakfast. He offers a number of outings for set prices, and we take him up on a tour of the city for 70R$ (1 R$ is 24p). We walk to the local beach and buy coconuts, drinking the milk straight from the coconut, as Robby tells us about his life [View Full Entry]

From Tatajuba we travelled up the coast passing through Camocim (eyesore!) , Parnaiba (nothing there!) and Tutoia (really grim!) and eventually ended up in a small town called Paulinho Neves. We werent really sure what to expect - we knew it was a small fishing town on the banks of a river - but it was much much better than just that !! Paulinho Neves is the entrance to the small Lencois sand dunes - the difference from the grand lencois - is that the small dunes have vast green areas next to them making them look even more beautiful. 1) make a new party on copacobana beach! 2) in doing so annoy the promoters of the stupidly rediculous party beside you! 3) encourage all to toss their havainianas into the previously excavated hole in the sand! 4) nominate a leming and will him to close hes eyes to surreptitiously select a flip flop! 5) goade, bully, shame and convince said person to kiss the owner of the selected foot attire 6) laugh like children and repeat with reluctant newcomers! oh, and i hang-glided over rio today! Rio begins, and God help me. I am here with these two Danish guys, and they swear they are broke. I think that they think that if they keep up this line of chat up, they can pull a whore for free. I told them that they have no chance. They ignored me. They shouldnt have. I think like a whore. Sorry thats a lie, I just like the smell of money and I am a sucker for Richard Gere. This place is in turns arousing, condescending, intriguing and disgusting. An average guy, walking into a nightclub, always reckons that there [View Full Entry]

" Out there with these natives it must be temptaion to be God. 'Cause there's a conflict in every human heart between the rational, the irrational, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. " The best thing about Austins predilection for ordering wine is the speed and ferocity with which he accomplishes it. "Bring me wine!", he screamed at the waiter who dared to offer us a menu or two. "Anything from the bottom of the shelf." "In fact, bring me your cheapest and worst wine. And Goddamnit if they are not the same, bring me both bottles!" [View Full Entry]

Fortaleza South America » Brazil » Ceará » Fortaleza
So from the beauty and tranquility of Lencois we headed off to the city of Fortaleza. I suppose you could call it the Benidorm of Brazil - huge skyscraper hotels right on the waterfront. Even though it wasnt what you would call picturesque - it did have a really pleasent atmosphere with lots of markets along the seafront. We didnt do a great deal there - though we did go out on a schooner for a couple of very relaxing hours. And Gina even managed to hunt down one the most exclusive hair salons in town for a hair cut - [View Full Entry]

Relaxing !!

So having had enough of city living - we decided that it was time to leave Fortaleza and head out to Jericoacoara - 4 hours up the coast by a mixture of mini-bus and 4x4. Our guide describes Jeri as a small , tranquil beach villiage - and it is really beautiful with the most amazing stars at night - the only problem being that it did seem to be a bit of a tourist trap with expensive boutiques lining the sandy streets. Having said that it shouldnt take away the beauty of the place - huge sand dunes (amazing for [View Full Entry]
