Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

phase 1 of our adventure is coming to an end as we have now decided that we will be leaving this tropical paridise on Monday! but its been amazing here! The Small Lençois

From Tatajuba we travelled up the coast passing through Camocim (eyesore!) , Parnaiba (nothing there!) and Tutoia (really grim!) and eventually ended up in a small town called Paulinho Neves. We werent really sure what to expect - we knew it was a small fishing town on the banks of a river - but it was much much better than just that !! So from the beauty and tranquility of Lencois we headed off to the city of Fortaleza. I suppose you could call it the Benidorm of Brazil - huge skyscraper hotels right on the waterfront. Even though it wasnt what you would call picturesque - it did have a really pleasent atmosphere with lots of markets along the seafront. We didnt do a great deal there - though we did go out on a schooner for a couple of very relaxing hours. So having had enough of city living - we decided that it was time to leave Fortaleza and head out to Jericoacoara - 4 hours up the coast by a mixture of mini-bus and 4x4. Our guide describes Jeri as a small , tranquil beach villiage - and it is really beautiful with the most amazing stars at night - the only problem being that it did seem to be a bit of a tourist trap with expensive boutiques lining the sandy streets. Landade 09.30. Traeffade en man som hette Hugo paa flyget och pratade med honom. Vi kaende instinktivt att det var bra att kaenna honom. Han aegde en travelagency i Manaus och hade mycket kontakter i Peru. Vi delade taxi fraan flyget och han hjaelpte oss till Policia Federal foer att faa en Exitstamp innan vi aakte vidare foer att ta vaerat "seaplane" som skulle gaa paa eftermiddagen. Vael framme vid agencyn som vi bokat genom (och haft kontakt med via mail) fick vi meddelandet att flyget hade redan gett sig av till Iquitos kl.09.00 paa morgonen denna dag. ...Tuffa besked! Help!
