Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Well I can safely say that the ´delights´of Sao Paulo have been well left behind me! I caught the bus from there to Rio last Sunday. It was a 6 hour ride between the two which actually passed fairly quickly. When we arrived we passed alongside Favelas on the outskirts of the city. They are amazing places, dense with ramshackle brick buildings that these people call home. There were loads of kids on the roofs flying little kites in the sun. On the bus I had met a great-granny from Rio who decided that it was her mission to look after [View Full Entry]

Buzios is a beautiful and chilled out city near Rio de Janeiro - about 3 hours driving. It became famous in the 60's, when Brigitte Bardot spent some time there. In the 70's, Mick Jagger was there for a couple of days. People say he arrived in a limo, and that was the first time that Buzios saw one. The beaches are wonderful. Some are so calm that just doesn't have waves, while others are great for surfing or kite surfing. The colour of the water is also amazing... At night people go to "Rua das Pedras", which means Stones Street. [View Full Entry]

This is Vincent. To be honest the idea of having an entry for friends we made on our way, came from his web site(www.planetvince.com). This friendly Irish guy, with his 40 centimeter beard, is always the central attraction for the locals when walking on the streets!! His Irish accent is almost incomprehensible, but fits very well with his role of a drug dealer in the movie he took part in when he was in India. He is a very funny guy, but he's always complaining about being bored.... hehehe. We first met in Istanbul and then in Olympus, where we started [View Full Entry]

We are always keen to know more locals, specially backpackers that are not on the road. Have nice conversation about traveling and exchanging experiences, everything tasting nice local beers. So, if you would like only to drink a beer with us or even have two crazy Brazilians staying over (following the principle of couchsurf.com or hospitalityclub.org), we would love to be invited...hehehe. We are not area restricted, so you can invite from anywhere in the world. Leave in the comment area of this post your invitation and for sure we will be with you once we arrive in your city/country. We spent several days in Brazil. We stopped in Curitiba, in the state of Parana, in southern Brasil, where we saw Don's former student Sergio Ahrens, his wife Suzanne, and their family. We then moved on to Rio de Janeiro. There, we walked Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, rode the cablecar to the top of Sugarloaf (the famous headland at the entrance to Rio's harbor), and rode the cog train up to to the Christ the Redeemer statue, high atop a mountain overlooking the city and harbor. Rio's setting is spectacularly beautiful. [View Full Entry]

So i took the famous "Death Train" a 22 hour train journey from Santa Cruz to the border of Brazil. The ticket was only 3.50gbp! you couldnt even get a cheap day return to Edinburgh for that! My last couple of days in Santa Cruz were great. I explored the market thoroughly and got lost many many times. I also met alot of really cool people but it was time to move on, Buenas Aires is a long way away and I had a lot of ground to cover to get there in time to meet Laura again. I had to [View Full Entry]

Although Caracas wasn't at all appealing, after some time travelling you start appreciating different things and the usual turist stuff is not that interesting anymore. I think that's why I enjoyed the five days I stayed there, in spite of the ugly place. Eva was still too weak to take care of herself, so I stayed longer than I had originally planned. She was going to fly back to the Netherlands on July 31. We went back to the doctor several times to take more tests and by the time I left, on the 30th, she was a lot better. I [View Full Entry]
