Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

I can´t believe I´m here in the legendary city of Rio De Janeiro staying at the legendary beach of Copacabana. It´s been a pretty cruisy few days here with late nights out on the town and slow wanders around town. Unfortunately the weather has been a little off and so haven´t seen the legendary G-string encased brown bums! I arrived about 2 AM on Sunday morning due to my flights from Lima being delayed. Coming out of the airport saw some serious road blocks with the local police armed with machine guns and were checking cars. It made me concerned whether [View Full Entry]

After the excitement of the Pantanal, we headed back for a quick night and day stop in a place called Bonito (which means beautiful in Spanish, hence the clever title!). It´s a tiny place but with some of the most amazing scenery. You are able to snorkel down this amazing river. I´m not sure on all the chemistry of it, but there are chemicals in the water that hold the sediment at the bottom so that it´s perfectly clear. It was just like swimming in an aquarium and absolutely teeming with fish (strangely!). Hopefully some of the snaps do it justice. [View Full Entry]

Women dont they just love markets and shopping, but in Brazil it can be excused cos today we went round a traditional Brazilian market and town,it made Denaby market look like Harrods!!!bought some flip flops and some beads so we look like proper travellers! We got there using the metro which is nicer than the underground in London and so cheap! We are so good at travelling round Rio. The market was cool but it was so busy that we were always on gaurd thinking everyone is going to nick our stuff!! Went in a couple of nice churches and lit a [View Full Entry]

We´ve seen it on the photos but now we have seen it for real!!WOW what a view, and guess what I could see the pub from up there! Its the biggest pile of soil we have ever been up,Bigger than belle vue hill (the cobbled road that leads to Andys mums house)and she would still manage to carry 8 big shopping bags up it No problem! The views were wicked and we got some really good photos (going to try and put them on here!) After that we went to Ipanema beach. This is where on a Sunday all the locals go there [View Full Entry]

Well we made it here to Rio after the longest flight in the world and with stop at Sau Paulo. Arrived at the airport expecting to be picked up by our hostel (El Misti). This was to be the first hurdle to overcome! They did not turn up!!! Loads of taxis and hostels hounding us and trying to drag us off! Andy dealt with this very well! (I was a little worried!) Eventually spoke to hostel who told us to get a taxi and would reinburse us. Anyway to cut a long story short we got taken to our hostel by [View Full Entry]

I Saw A Jaguar! South America » Brazil » Pantanal
Hi at home. I know it's been a while since I managed to get a new blog loaded and I have loads to tell you about since the last time! OK, first up is the Pantanal. It's an area in southern Brzail that has large plains in the dry season and is covered completely in the wet season. I flew down from Salvador and then via about three buses made it to meet up with the Aussie guy Pat that I was with on Isla Grande. Day 1 was a boat trip along the river for 3 hours where we saw [View Full Entry]

Geez, people are nice here. Really frickin’ small town wave and nod and say good morning and give you the restroom key at the gas station before you ask and joke around with you when you bump into them on the sidewalk nice. In one of the biggest cities in the world. Amazing. How do they do it? Its especially interesting b\c people in Rio are so markedly not nice... (i have a theory about that - i think it has to do with the way the cities are laid out.) [View Full Entry]

São Paolo: Social Observations Part I: The Museum. (NB this entry is long) Bruno’s anxiety over his VISA interview had been growing steadily over the month of August but reached its peak in São Paolo. He spent a lot of time staring off into the distance and even said at times that he wasn’t hungry (!!!!). Yes, a true rarity for the Brumaster. So what could we do to distract him? We went to a museum about São Paolo and Brazil in the nineteenth century. It’s housed in a building that was supposed to replicate the palace at Versailles, but they [View Full Entry]

As I write to you, I am sat in an internet cafe with a very sore head after the Salvador street party last night. This was something that was always on my list of things to do ever since I dreamed up this trip at home. Thanks to Shauna's mate (Hello!) I headed here for what promised to be a great party, and it pretty much lived up to expectations! It was another 8 hour bus trip from Itacare and we arrived at about 7.30 to a bustling station. Salvador has got a bit of a bad reputation amongst the travellers [View Full Entry]

Tuesday it was still raining tropical style. i went to hospital and we ended up talking about where all the transvestites in BA loiter. I went to my other placement, but the bus broke down (very common here) and i had to walk in torrential rain for three blocks. Sat for two hours sodden and cold. Had a good lesson tho. It degenerated into teaching her swear words (its ok, shes 18 and she needs to know these things) and comparing animal sounds. Found myself mooing and woofing a lot, in fits of giggles. Tuesday night, we stayed in with a [View Full Entry]
