Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

After Sao Paulo South America » Brazil
After the visa we were really (and I mean really, really) happy to leave São Paulo. I still can´t understand what 20 million people are doing in that place: breathing CO2, spending hours stuck in traffic to get anywhere, hearing buses and trucks hunking and burning millions of gallons of fuel while painting the sky brown - 24/7. The following two weeks were very relaxing, spending time with my family and speaking some Portuguese with familiar faces. By the way, very relaxing for me, not for Faith. She had to spend time with my family and speak Portuguese with unfamiliar faces. [View Full Entry]

Will in Brazil South America » Brazil
Our eventfull ten days started with an SOS e-mail from Will saying he was stuck in Auckland for a night and when he finally arrived his bag and boards didn´t! So we decided to go to Rio de Janeiro first. We arrived in Copacabana, Rio at 2 o´clock in the morning and frantically tried to find a hotel because Tom was in more dying need of a number 2 than any man in toilet history. Will and I where tired of hearing him winge. No one wanted to accept us at that hour, but after 3 hotels we finally got a [View Full Entry]

Our first few days in Rio did not happen quite as we had imagined. Lying on sunny beaches has had to be postponed for a bit. The clouds and drizzle have not stopped us seeing the Statue of Christ (amazing views all round on the one clear afternoon!) , Sugar Loaf mountain, the Botanical gardens and meeting up with Chris (J´s cousin..ish) and his family. We enjoyed taking the rickety tram up to Santa Teresa. This is an area full of quirky streets with the occasional cafe and souvenir shop. Great view of Rio and the favellas. Have decided to take [View Full Entry]

We arrived yesterday after 4 buses and 20 hours on the road! We were well tired. Great hostel, got hamocks, pool, relaxing area all outside (as it is warm up north) all for 5quid each a night. So we are in Bonito, yes we changed our route, it´s a little town in the middle of no where, near Bolivia (look it up!) There is one main road through it and all the other roads are dirt tracks. Just chilled out last night after checking out the ´town´and booking a tour for tomorrow. Today we were up at 6.50am as we were [View Full Entry]

One of many fish
monkey business

And they´re off!! The start to our trip didn´t go quite as planned, but turned out really well for us. We turned up at Heathrow with all our bags ready to check in and were offered 405 pounds each to take the next days flight. This was too good to pass up, so we found ourselves spending our first night not in a hostel, but in the Heathrow Hilton! This meant an extra day hanging around the airport, but the free food, the indoor pool and the cash did compensate! The flight was fine, apart from being separated. Some couples might [View Full Entry]

The emails begging our parents for extra money so we could stay here an extra month, or 6 failed so we are on our way home this afternoon. Its been an adventure, but its okay because now we are planning our next one. last minute dash We´re in Rio again now but getting here was a bit of a struggle, with less than 10 days to go we suddenly realised that we were in Peru, humm, so a taxi to [View Full Entry]

Big Bobs Forever!
Paraty
Miles and miles of white sand...and even whiter tourists

Brazil. Get me off this ship! The seas have been quite rocky and we are all ready to be on land! (I have yet to get seasick though. .knock on wood!) Thank goodness too the land we found was BRAZIL! The second stop on this voyage around the world and I have already experienced so much. On Monday morning when we arrived in Salvador we put down our anchor and waited to be allowed to dock. We had to have a health inspection because we had just come from Venezuela and then we all had to go through immigration (passport stamped!) [View Full Entry]

After our 20 hours unsuccsessful journey whale watching we have now travelled 16 hours into the middle of Brazil, next to the borders with Paraguay and Argentina to see the massive water falls. We arrived at 8am got a couple of buses to our ´hotel´, looked a bit seedy with the tramps lying next door but had been recommended by the lonely planet guide, had our breakfast (and made our lunch as usual) the room was fine, minus the paint peeling. We went straight out and onto a bus to go to the brazilian side of the falls. Got to the [View Full Entry]

The people you touch, the way you touch them, I hope they touch you too, cause in this life its hard to tell whats false and what is true... The things you see, the way you see them may never be seen again... The thing that's strange is you only live once and never look back again. Im dying to be alive, not trying to just survive, lets not go through our lives without just dying to be alive. - Hanson The journey to Brazil was a long one. We were at sea for about a week and the last couple [View Full Entry]
