I took the bus as usual... it departured from tiete at 6 pm when I was near the airport the bus stopped suddenly then I heard a huge noise... and an explosion... the bus was crowded so I wasn't able to see much of what was happening in the other side of the bus.... but people started to panic it was awful lots of people from the other side of the bus crying "we are going to die!!!" and a lot of people jumped from the bus through the windows... some were even crazier and got out through the door which was in front of the fire (as I figured when part of the crowd had left ... read more

Spent last weekend in São Paulo with my buddy Marcos and his family. I met Marcos last year in Italy on the train from Pisa to Rome. We were the only two people on the train and both only had backpacks with us. We started chatting and ended up hanging out in Rome and have stayed in touch ever since. He is a great friend and his family’s hospitality was more than I could of asked for. The weekend was exactly what I needed, not much touristy stuff just chilling with Marcos, his family and friends. On Friday we went to the pre-graduation party of a friend of Marcos’s. They don’t play around here, it was a month before the actual graduation and they started partying hard at 12:30 in the afternoon. The band was ... read more

Asleep on the flight from Toronto, I was woken up after midnight by the flight attendant loudly asking: CHICKEN OR BEEF? I requested veggie, but as the flight attendant informed me, the veggie has to be pre-ordered. So I settled back to drift in and out of plane slumber and dream of my future experiences in Brazil. My heart pounded faster with excitement at the thought of the unknown. As the plane landed flew over São Paulo, I started to wonder just how I was going to make my way around the massive city. Knowing very little Portuguese the thought was intimidating considering that the greater São Paulo metropolitan area has almost 20 million inhabitants making it the fifth most populous metropolitan area in the world! Luckily, the guy I was sitting next to on ... read more

Now the first view I had of Sao Paulo at night from the airplane was a city that just didn´t end. It was massive. From the plane it was difficult to determine where the centre of the city actually was because there were massive clusters of sky scrapers everywhere. For those travellers who only venture to Rio here and Iguazu, this is nothing like the rest of Brazil, nothing like it. It´s a pretty clean young and well organised city with the most efficient subway system I´ve ever seen. You have to wait less than a minute between trains and the lines are nice and close together. We arrived late and took an over-priced bus into the centre and stayed with the formula 1 hotel chain - was $10 reals more than a hostel - avoid ... read more

So after spending the past week with butterflies about coming to Brazil and arriving in Sao Paolo which is apparantly quite dangerous, I have arrived and have fallen in love with this place within 24 hours. Arriving at the airport a little late because the plane was delayed I attach myself to a couple of English girls who are going to the same hostel, it´s always better to be in a group. Thinking of catching a taxi which is very expensive because was unsure of whether to catch public transport late in the afternoon, but once I speak with the lady at the information booth she assures me that it´s safe and especially so today because the pope is in town. Thanking the catholics now as it saved me around $30. So off we go ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo March 12th 2007

Thursday 8th March to Thursday 15th March, 2007. At 13.40 and at the fourth attempt I finally departed Paraty for the six hour bus ride south to Sao Paulo, the world´s second biggest city and home to 22 million Paulistans, 22 million and one if you included my brother in law Russell who had arrived on business 36 hours earlier. My seat was at the very front and I immediately made my self comfortable in the hope of sleeping through the trip but the heat within the still stationery bus made that impossible and so I sat back and waited for the air conditioning to kick in. Initially I thought it was just me, that my body was handing out what it considered to be justly deserved punishment for staying up late and consuming copious amounts ... read more
