Well we left London in driving rain but were soon above the clouds in glorious sunshine. What a trip. AS you know we cashed in a bucket of airmiles and upgraded to the front of the plane. Lindsay always turns left anyway, but was escorted to her seat and given a class of champagne. However for some reason there was no one else in the front of the plane. Just the two of us and of course 2 cabin crew fighting over us. Was in the BO or should someone have mentioned something to us. Well Lindsay said it was marvelous and why had we not done this before - gulp - this could be the start of something expensive. Anyway it was a nice way to pass the 12 hour trip and in no time ... read more

We emerged at dawn to look round the noisy city, found a great breakfast coffee shop called Bella Paulista set a block back from the famous main drag called Avenida Paulista. The coffee bar had a huge mural with a picture from the 1930's showing the large houses and gardens on the tree lined streets. Now is different with the financial centre and the Arts. There is a picture here for Tommy - things don't look too good for City Group here! We went on a trip round the City taking in all the sights. I would not say SP is a tourist haven but we had a really great time taking in the city culture! The central market was a great experience and the shopping in the boutique district was pretty spectacular. We were recommended ... read more

The past few days have been a bit more low key. Travelling in South America proves to be a more difficult expereince when booking bus rides and hostels. As it is the busy season here everything fills up fast and it seems that the rule is to try and book things 24 hours in advance. Of course nobody speaks english and websites are often all in portugese and using the phone is really out of the question unless you speak the jive. Fortunatley in the hostels we have been staying in, nearly all the people speak english, and the one we stayed in last night the people spoke native UK englsih. Also working for them was a girl who was able to get on the phone and speak in portugese to help us reserve tickets. Paraty ... read more

I had read about Sao Paulo before I arrived and it wasn´t entirely reassuring: 10 years ago the murder rate was up to 700 a month and it is legal to drive through red lights at night in case someone tries to rob you. Stepping out of Praca da Arvore Metro station (the nearest to my hostel) didn´t reassure me either as the place looked pretty dodgy at 11 pm on New Years Day. I got a taxi straight away, checked in and went to bed. In fairness, Sao Paulo is far nicer than its reputation suggests and my local area was quiet and safe. Ok, it is not as pretty as Rio and, if you are not a city person, then you might not be that fond of it. I am though and hence I ... read more

So a brief update on the last few days. After a few days resting in Cusco we flew to Lima for Christmas. We stayed at a four star hotel, that had cable TV, a bath, hairdryer and bar. It´s amazing the things you miss when you stay in hostels. We spent Christmas Eve wrapping presents and Mandy and I also made Christmas crackers. Mandy also had her hair cut. I am still managing to cut my own. Christmas Day we phoned home and spoke to everyone. It was great to hear from all on my side of the family. Jason remember the next few months are very important - I want to hear that you got great GCSE results when I come home. Hayley continue working hard (?) at Uni and Stacey enjoy management, be a ... read more

We spent 3 nights in Cusco after the Inca Trail to give our legs time to recover. Miles was still not well & we had to get a doctor to him too. He had the same as me, but Tina recovered quickly¨& was ok. I think hers was food poisoning. We flew back to Lima xmas eve lunch time & booked into our lovely hotel (Tina´s birthday treat). I got my hair cut (still a mess). Wish it was still straight! Tina¨& I made xmas crackers¨& we wrapped our secret santa presents up. I phoned home & spoke to my mum, dad, sister & nephew. Very emotional to be so many miles away from them all. Everything closed early xmas eve as this is the Peruvians special time. Apparently they eat xmas dinner at midnight. We ... read more

After a 12-hour flight from Frankfurt (Lufthansa are great!) I finally made it to São Paulo.... I'm officially in Brazil and on another continent...hehe I arrived at 7am Brazilian time (10am Malta time), which meant I had the whole day ahead me. I must admit I was quite tired after the journey, but being in a foreign country gives you unexpected energy, and the sun was shining and it was so warm ... I love this weather! Karene, my friend from SP was at the airport to welcome me, which was great, since I haven't seen here since last July. Put my stuff down at her apartment, took a shower and then she asked me if I minded to join her and her twin sister,Tamires, in looking for an apartment to rent, as they would like ... read more

Wow...I know I say this all the time but I really don´t know where to start!! So sorry I´ve been so distant recently, really have been just mega mega busy and don´t really have any other excuse hehe!! Ok, think I´ll start with my last week of Alegría, since that´s as far back as I can remember! What a week and a half!! The weeks before it were also really busy, since all the kids had exams (well the older ones anyways) which was a lot of hard work for both us and them! Then they had parent/teacher interviews which was scary cos I was left to take the class a lot of the time, at least it was just Christmassy stuff they were doing so I could manage fine =) Then on Wednesday 28th November ... read more

Brazil I love you! The first thing we did when we got off the plane in South America was run outside to feel the warmth. That’s when Takashi started screaming, “I love you Brazil!” at the top of his lungs. We were surprised with 2 Smirnoff buses, branded, telling the world what we were doing. As I put my head out the window to feel the warm breeze, people were looking me, knowing I was a Smirnoff Ten member- and it felt good. The first couple of days in Brazil were a little hectic, however I enjoyed every minute of it. We first went to a hotel in the heart of Sao Paulo. What amazed me was my window view: I had my own gateway to about 200 apartments. Every time I would look outside ... read more

14/12-15/12/07 What can I say about Sao Paulo..... Well there are apparently 17 million people living there. Thats about it.... We arrived about 6 in the morning and had stupidly not booked any accomodation thinking it would be easy to find at this time when people are checking out. haha! We jumped on the metro and headed to a highly recommended hostel, only to be turned away as they were full. They were very good though in letting us dump our gear to allow us to find somewhere which we attempted to do. Paul set off into the streets to find another recommended hostel only to return unsuccessful. We eventually found the Samba Hostel which isn't actually called that but is in the LP but actually called Pousada dos Franceses. We got our fingers to do ... read more
