Greetings everyone! It's our last day in Florianopolis and I am finally feeling A LOT better. I just had breakfast with Par. He is coughing and a little feverish so I sent him back to the room for some rest before we take our final walk on the Canasvieres beach. Our flight leaves at 15.00 so we have to be ready and packed for the shuttle at 12noon. Today we head back to Sao Paulo where we will be met by a driver who will bring us to Jundiai. This is where Lena's friend and Conti colleague Karina lives. Ca~n't wait to see her again, it's been almost 4 years since we met at a training course in Hannover, Germany. Well, gotta go pack. Hope everyone is doing well! Hugs!... read more

He did it! 12 hours and 37 minutes....which isn't close to what he was hoping for, but still great. He had a fever in the morning, sore throat and barely slept at all, so I'm very impressed. After he finished he apparently seemed a bit wobbly, because they hooked him up to an IV and gave him a shot of something. He said he felt a lot better after that. We tried going to breakfast this morning (Monday) but I was feeling really, really dizzy and had to be almost carried by Par back to the room (which thank god is on the first floor!!) There I passed out, right by the door. But only for a few seconds. To make a long story short, I barely ate anything the day before so I was probably ... read more

Today is race day. The start was at 7 am this morning and judging from pictures it was a beautiful sunrise, a little chilly but it has warmed up. I am spending the day in the hotelroom due to a nasty fever/cold/sore throat combination that makes me feel a bit weak and I don't want to get anyone else sick. Par had a slight fever this morning so I hope he has enough energy to finish the race. He has some of great grandma Ida's skorpor in his special needs bag. :-) Yesterday we went on a leisurely boat tour which was great. We caught some sun (!) however the trip back was a bit windy which I'm sure didn't help us feel better. We were on an old wooden sailboat (but no sailing) and went ... read more

Our trip here was fairly uneventful. Par and I met up in Miami - where he just managed to walk up behind me without knowing where I was at.... :-( Som minor baggage issues (when are there NOT baggage issues????) and we were ready. But wait, doesn't Gustaf live in Miami - Par's roommate from Georgetown and also Swedish - so we called mom who called him and all of a sudden he calls and is on his way to pick us up. We went down to Coral Beach and caught up on some gossip and met Rat Bastard (small white teacup maltese) and Selma (large black some kind of terrier) and had a good time. Ett skafferi, flera skafferåd, eller hur var det nu? At 9:45pm, we boarded our flight and took off for Sao ... read more

Florianopolis, Brazil (March 12-21) Having had several friends visit and swear by it, I had to make a visit to the beautiful beach resort of Florianopolis, located south of San Paolo on the island of Santa Catarina off the coast with some 40 beaches. I had struggled for some days on whether to hit the beach life of Brazil again or do more cultural tourism through Argentina and Bolivia... I guess one last week on teh beach sounded appealing and several of my friends have claimed it´s close to paradise. After arriving late Tuesday, I spent the next morning negotiating a cheap car for the week and driving some of the island to figure out where to stay. The northern beaches of Ingleses and Santinho looked nice but filled with families. I got lost, well kinda ... read more

If anyone wants me to bring back some chicken, let me know. The big story here is that a few Eastern European and Middle Eastern Countries cut off imports of chicken from Brazil using bird flu as a pretext (despite there being no bird flu in Brazil). Most of the chicken in Brazil is raised in the state of Florianopolis, so the supermarkets are overstocked and sellling packs of chicken with Arabic writing for about US$0.25 a pound. I am also taking orders for Viagra and Cialis, which are sold in big display cases by the checkouts in pharmacies. No prescription needed. What Am I Doing? Who am I kidding? The weather is pretty nasty today, and I already used up two rainy days exploring the center of the city. So, I am catching up on ... read more

30 hours after leaving Campo Grande, I arrived in Florianopolis. A bizarre town with an attached island. The island is amazing beaches with a lake in the centre. I tried to get a taxi to the hostel as it was 10pm and I was shattered but got confused again. The taxi driver kept trying to point me to it and I was trying to say, I don't care if it's close I want to pay. Then it finally clicked he was saying it was too dangerous and I have to take a taxi! Got to the HI hostel, worst hostel so far. The room stank of piss and had 3 very loud German girls in my room. They didn't seem to know the hostel rule where you don't turn the light on if someone is sleeping. ... read more

This week is all about deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeceleration. I packed a lot into the first 10 days of my trip in Chile and Argentina. For this week and the next three, I am in Florianopolis, taking Portuguese lessons. Florianopolis is an island in the south of Brazil, and capital of the Santa Catarina province. The island is big - about 42 km north to south, and maybe 20 km east to west at its widest. There are about 370,000 people who lived on the island, but the population doubles in the summer. The island has 43 beaches, and mountains. It is beautiful. My life here is very, very difficult. I am living with a host family in the Santa Monica neighborhood. The house is large and impeccable - everything is white and spotless, granite stairs, walk-in showers. I´ll ... read more

Greetings Mortals, So here I am in famous Floripa. Well that is the nickname anyway. From what I have been told I should have been here in January. The place is really beautiful. Just went swimming in a lagoon yesterday. It is always sunny here. Today we might rent a car and go check out other beaches. The ladies are absolutely stunning and my neck muscles are getting really strong from all that turning from side to side. One problem however, I am not sure if I ever met least friendly people or snobby/narrow minded.com. Once they find out you do not speak portugese it is over before it even began. Even in the nighclubs...it is beginning to remind me of Calgary except the eye candy is way and the Russ means WAYYYY better here. I ... read more

Hi friends and family, I finally managed to get some photos downloaded. Enjoy. Hope everyone is well. I´ve made my way up to Brazil and had no problems crossing the border thanks to my UK passport. I am leaving Florinopolis today and heading to the Foz de Igazu. Will give everyone a better update then. Take care, Richard... read more
