After numerous visits to beaches to which I've simply turned up my nose and instantly dismissed, getting to Armacao Beach on Santa Catarina Island in Brazil was a most refreshing surprise. This was an island paradise of the highest order. Everything about the place was just perfect. It was undeveloped enough to preserve an isolated and very laid-back feel, but at the same time had enough good cheap food options to keep me very well fed. Top of the list was the local pizza buffet which had some amazing pizzas, most notably the chocolate pizzas with ice-cream they served for dessert. I'm not normally much of a sweet-tooth but these were absolutely incredible. Upon arrival at Bell's Company Hostel, the first person I met when I walked in was 'Gecko', the bloke who managed the ... read more

Thursday 19th April to Saturday 27th April, 2007. Five days to go, almost time to return to the UK and I´m afraid I cannot say, other than for the most obvious of reasons of seeing family and friends, that I am particularily looking forward to my return. As I write this I am sat alone in the warmth of Stella´s Renault Megane looking out at an angry Atlantic venting it´s fury on nothing but a handful of bored looking seagull´s, a couple of wrapped up and optimistic anglers casting off the rocks and a huge expanse of deserted white sand. Three days of cloudy skies has heralded the onset of Winter for Florianopolis and today is more reminiscent of a chilly and blustery late Autumn day at Cromer than the sun baked beach life to ... read more

okay...and we are back!! thanks for joining us for another installment of "Where have i seen that outfit before??"... yes, yes..a backpacker rarely stresses over what to wear each day....lack of options remedy this...and luckily beach settings don~t warrant much clothing. so, enjoy the pictures of florianopolis which is a southern island of brazil that is actually home to a pretty good size city but more importantly...miles of surrounding beaches. yes, there is a theme to our brazil destinations. outside florianopolis city lies little beach towns that cater to the seasonal tourists but outside of the summer months...only the locals and die hard surfers are around. after our 18 hour bus ride from rio into the city, we decided to chance it with little help out to the little..i mean little town of barra de ... read more

Tuesday 3rd April to Wednesday 18th April 2007. I was feeling perhaps a sense of 'into the unknown´ when I loaded my sack into the boot of Face´s gleaming set of wheels, his newly rented white Fiat Panda and set off for the ten minute drive to my new home, the fourth since my arrival on the island, Stella´s rented colonial style house in Lagoa do Conceciao. She had searched for weeks upon her arrival in Floripa for a suitable place for her and Gabriella and had chosen well. Set over three levels (the ground floor from where wafts of pot smoke will occasionally filter up to the verandha above is rented out to a guy named Junior), the all wooden structure has four bedrooms on the two remaining floors, two bathrooms, an extremely spacious ... read more

Thursday 15th March to "The beaches are beautiful and the girls are even better. The best in Brazil". If I had a pound for each and every time I had heard someone say that in the last six weeks or so I wouldn't find myself in my current unenviable position of penny watching as I am and as it lay one third of the way to my intended destination of Uruguay twelve hours to the south of Sao Paolo I thought that that is where I would head. An announcement over the tannoy at Congohas Airport solely in Portugese re; my flight spellt trouble, especially as boarding time was imminent but fortunately the delay was a minor irritant, just one and a half hours and I arrived in Florianopolis in heavy rainfall as darkness fell. So Stef is off taking her SCUBA course over the next 3 days on Santa Catarina which has then left me to my own devices. I opted to bus back into town and wander for a bit, aka. Trolling for Brazilian men. But being as its another sweltering day I´ve sought air conditioning and hammered out our... Brazilian Top Ten 10. Alright... So Stef and I have slowly been making our way south along the Brazilian coast. Somehow we have managed to island jump the entire route with the expection of Sao Paulo. First we headed to Pararty, a touristy port town that found us living in a treehouse like hostel for 3 nights. We conveniently arrived on the weekend to find all of old town alive with vendors, musicians and outdoor dining. It was a nice switch up from the hustle of Carnaval. From Paraty we headed to Ilhe Grande, home to Brazil´s most beautiful beach...which we actually never got the chance to see. However we did decide to take a 13 kilometer trek over the mountain to the jail on the opposite side of the island. It was brilliant until an hour in we realize ... read more

Well it has been sometime since we have updated our blog and we have since had several experiences that we must share with you - the details may be hazy however as the last week has been a blur of samba, sweat, sun, soccer and skin. We arrived in Rio on the first official day of carinval even though there had been a hype for weeks before. We were met at the airport by wonderful Michael (a collegue from Maribyrnong) who took us to our hotel in Copacabana. The bus ride took longer than usual as we were held up but a block party in our street and our first experience of Copacabana was trying to cross a road with one thousand people and a huge party float between us and the hotel! Once settled in ... read more

Well, Kyrsten put on her brazilian swim suit this morning but the weather didnt care. It turned cold, and we had to take Marcio to the airport at noon. We got him there on time and craig finally met us. Kyrsten changed money and they went shopping at the airport while we talked with marcio. After that we had a Brazilian feast of different fish and shrimp on the beach at praia del sul. And then had a cheap evening in with the rain. Everyone fell asleep early after too many days up late. We woke up around 10.00 pm and watched carnival in Rio for a few hours and went back to bed... read more

Floripa South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » Florian polis By visionarycreatrixFebruary 18th 2007Rissa Florianópolis, also known as Floripa, is a wonderful island off of the state of Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil. I am visiting my godmother who lives in the commercial center. The best thing here are the beautiful beaches that dominate the landscape. Riberão da Ilha, Cameche, Aramção, Inglêses, Santo Antônio de Lisboa are a few of my favorites. Most are small fishing villages that still hold onto the charm of its early histor... read more
