A quote from my travel journal for today:
'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step´

We have had only two days for Rio but it´s been enough.
Yesterday Corcovado and statue of Cristo Redentor, Maracana stadium (which was closed unfortunately) and sunset on the top of Sugar Loaf mountain (Pao de Açucar) which gave us the biggest thrill!!! it´s hard to put down in words how stunning the view was!
I haven´t seen a city with such an amazing landscape!!!!!!!!

We had a pretty incredible experience today as we met Mr Selaron carrying out his work on, now called with his name, Selaron Stairway (Escadaria Selaron).
Since 1990 the Chilean-born Selaron has been adding more and more original tiles onto steps between Santa Tereza and Lapa in Rio. Initialy the tiles were in blue, green and yellow colours as a tribute to the Brazilian people but then he started adding tiles from all over the world. He´s now collected tiles from 97 countries but not a single one from Poland!!! He either brings them from countries he visits or he asks visitors to post him tile(s) from their countries. You can imagine how interested he

was to find out we were Poles. Unfortunately neither Karolina nor I will be in Poland in the nearest future.
(Selarion´s address - just in case one of you comes across some Polish tiles:
Selaron (Pintor Chileno), Escadaria Selaron, no 24 (atras da Sala Cecilia Meireles), CEP: 20241-120, Santa Tereza, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil).

To sum up, with no doubt the best things I´ve experienced in Rio:
- sunset from the top of the Sugar Loaf mountain
- encounter with Mr Selaron
- fighting with waves on Copacabana

Those two days have been wonderful. Very much satisfied with what we´ve seen we are heading to Salvador tomorrow.
