Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Carol, Giselle and I arrived in Rio around 11:00. The first thing I noticed was the number of people with shirts that read estacionamento- Portuguese for parking. They seemed to be all over the place, and I wondered why there were “so many parking cops.” It turns out they are the humane parking meters of Brazil. When you are parking they guide you into the space, if it is sunny they cover your window with an old piece of cardboard, and when you leave they help you get out of the spot. Nothing in life is free, and the services [View Full Entry]

Catedral de S. Sebastiao
Catedral de S. Sebastiao
Also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral, I think it looks pretty hideous from the outside.
This is our first day in Rio , we arrived yesterday after, so we decided to go for a wander around downtown. There´s a walking tour route suggested in my Lonely Planet Guide that we roughly followed, we altered it slightly but we saw all the main sights. We found one of the ugliest cathedrals in the world - the Catedral de S. Sebastiao. Well I thought it was, Matt liked it. U can look at the photo and judge for yourself. On the map it was shown as being in the middle of a park, it was in fact in [View Full Entry]

Fighting Guinea Squirrel

Arrived at the Botafogo Easy Hostel, set two blocks from the beach. Looked like a proper hostel with lots of people coming in and out of the place, and a bar and mini pool. Went up to Santa Teresa for a proper visit after our Corcovado trip cut our previous visit short. Lin was all smiles on the Tram ride both up and down. Some people are easy to please! We walked through the cobbled streets taking in views of the Favelahs below. Saw the film Á Virgin at 40´ . Gave us alot of laughs and the Portugese subtitles must [View Full Entry]

Corcovado
Corcovado
The big guy in the sky!
Our first few days in Rio did not happen quite as we had imagined. Lying on sunny beaches has had to be postponed for a bit. The clouds and drizzle have not stopped us seeing the Statue of Christ (amazing views all round on the one clear afternoon!) , Sugar Loaf mountain, the Botanical gardens and meeting up with Chris (J´s cousin..ish) and his family. We enjoyed taking the rickety tram up to Santa Teresa. This is an area full of quirky streets with the occasional cafe and souvenir shop. Great view of Rio and the favellas. Have decided to take [View Full Entry]

Visiting Rio de Janeiro is always an amazing experience. It was Erik’s first visit and we spend 3 days there. We visited the usual stuff such as the Sugar Loaf, Redeemer Christ, Botanic Garden, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and other nice spots. A shame that the weather wasn’t good but it was really hot and humid. Rio at night is an amazing experience. The Lagoa da Conceicao is such a stunning place. As Erik say, no doubt that Rio is among the most beautiful cities in the world. We haven’t taken nice photos this time but we promise next time we’ll [View Full Entry]
