Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

When my baby smiles at me I go to Rio...de Janeiro......... At the Copa, Copacabana....music and passion were always in fashion.... Yes sad and cheesy but I could not get those songs out of my head on the trip up (even more frustrating I couldn’t remember any more words!!!) they just kept going around and around. So there I was with gorgeous coast line on one side, beautiful rainforest on the other humming/singing away to myself (and to Matt - probably much to his annoyance!) Guess I was excited about Rio.... First impressions weren’t the greatest. It was raining and [View Full Entry]

So, we're finally here! This is our third and final day here so we do have a bit to tell you now! Getting here from snowy Maryland was no easy feat. We left the farm early Thursday morning arrived at BWI and had to wait for the rainstorms to pass through Atlanta before our Atlanta bound flight would take off. This meant that we eventually touched down in Atlanta at the exact same time our Rio flight was boarding...talk about a mad dash through three terminals!! We made it just as the doors were closing...and more surprisingly even our luggage made [View Full Entry]

I would just like to say thank you to everyone who came out and made my various leaving do's (there did seem to be quite a few) so much fun. Thanks for all the presents and good wishes, especially the ipod that everyone put so much work into adding the music to. I have finally arrived in Rio, a little later than i had expected but feeling better for having proven the temporal version of the butterfly effect. Now i know that you my friends that have known me for years will treat the rumours that have been circulating with the [View Full Entry]

Ahh...at last, another iconic moment in the trip...(and another misuse of íconicī)..but still a significant milestone in the journey...to get to the most famous and exotic of Brasilīs places..Rio de Janeiro...and just for starters..its not a bloody river at all..the turkey who first landed..way, way back, thought it was and so named it..the next bozo that came along didnīt have the nouse or the courtesy to re-name it...like Porto de Janeiro, no, he wants the first bugger to have wear the ignomy for all time...anyway... Into the most beautiful city in the world, they say.....across the longest [View Full Entry]

Day 1 We arrived in Rio in the morning after a 13 hour journey, somehow ended up in a taxi that took us to our hotel. Then we crashed out for a couple of hours. We woke up in the early afternoon and went for a wander round Flemengo and along the beach. Later we went for some dinner, where we started to reallise just how foreign we are. Usually in europe you can muddle you way through and I thought I a basic understanding of Portugese, but appartently not. Watching Carly trying to get her way through a family size [View Full Entry]

We had an interesting journey getting to Rio de Janeiro... Arriving about 2 hours early at the airport (as we believed you were supposed to do), we headed for the check-in desk and were a little horrified to be told that our flight had been overbooked and we couldnīt fly until the next day!!! What the!?! So a bit deflated we headed towards another desk where theyīd arrange a hotel for the night and compensation for the inconvenience. Maria did a great job of arguing our case (as she would!) and we were more than surprised when they told us we [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Rio the night before Lorna's birthday and stayed in a truly nasty hostel in Downtown Rio. When we awoke we got out of there very quickly and headed to the posh hotel in Copacabana we had booked as a birthday treat. After exploring the area and enjoying the luxury of the hotel we went for dinner and champagne at a lovely restaurant on Ipanema beach. Lorna had sparklers in her pudding and the waiters sang 'Happy Birthday'. Most of our following time in Rio was spent lazing on the beach and working on our suntans. We were in [View Full Entry]

Its our last day in Rio today. Yesterday we went to the museum of modern art. Thereīs not much to say about it really. There wasnīt a huge amount there and most of what was there looked like it had been taken from a primary school. We werenīt impressed. Today we went to the botanical gardens. It was a lovely hot day, the hottest weīve had. There was lots to see at the Botanical gardens but unfortunately we didnīt have time to see it all as we had to get back to do our packing, (we donīt have much stuff but [View Full Entry]

Today we went on a safari jeep tour into the national park which is all rainforest with lots of waterfalls. There were lots of pretty plants, some of which I recognised from our garden, and we saw some Marmosettes (little monkeys) which were really sweet but unfortunately I didnīt manage to get any photos of them, but we did definitely see them, Iīm not making it up. Our jeep stopped a few times for us to have a bit of a wander through the forest and for us to see the visitors centre, the capela mayrink (a little pink chapel with [View Full Entry]
