Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Rio has been an awesome place to spend time, and you could easily spend a lot longer there (Mehalah spent 2 months and needs more time). There is a massive variety of things to do and the people are very friendly. It is hard to grasp quite how big rio is, it follows the coast for miles and miles, sorounded by by mountains and lush forests. This means that pretty much where ever you are you are not far from an amazing sandy beach, backed by cycle paths and beach sellers. These beaches are pretty amazing especialy considering the fact that [View Full Entry]

Well, I seem to end up in a place for a few days, sometimes a few weeks, but eventually it is time to move on. I booked a bus ticket this morning. The bus will take me to Porto Alegre tomorrow. From there I will jump on a bus to Montevideo and spend a few days in the Uraguay Capital, before getting a boat accross the bay to Buenos Aries. I have a flight booked out of Buenos for a weeks time, bound for Ushuaia in Torre De Fuego. I have spent about 10 days in Rio de Janeiro. I spent [View Full Entry]

A quick project I had in mind

Happy New Year, everyone! We arrived in Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil after a couple hours of layover in São Paulo (another crazy town) several days ago. Unfortunately we didn't see any Rio landmark our first night due to our late arrival. We went directly to our hostel in Botafogo neighborhood, which located only twenty minutes walking from Copacabana and Ipanema beach, sitting next to the Corcovado with the Cristo Redentor statue on top. Eating fruits in Botafogo, visiting favela (Rio's famous slums), riding cable car to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain, swimming [View Full Entry]

Friday 30th December 2005 What a fantastic day! If only I could put up my pictures right now!! Even though they wouldn´t come close to doing it justice, still no words would be necessary! I went up to see the big man, JC, on top of his rocky outcrop. I don´t have a sufficiently flowery vocabulary to desribe effectively how absolutely stunningly spectacular the views are from up there. There is a heaven, and if you come to Rio, it´s real easy to find, just look up, and do whatever it takes to get there. It really is something every single [View Full Entry]

The view up top

Thursday 29th December 2005 So... the boat party. I have to say we were all a little disappointed. We left really late for starters. And then the boat was full of gringos. Drunk gringos by the end of things. We could´ve been in Ibiza or something. Oh, and it just went to 1 beach in the end, and the water was absolutely filthy. But the location was spectacular so we made the most of it. Oh, and on the gringos note, I seem to have found myself in a hostel where everyone has a similar dislike for the traditional English tourist! [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 27th December Sat in the departure lounge waiting for my flight to Rio de Janeiro. It´s sat outside, a beautiful big jumbo. And what an ordeal just getting this far! First, BA had to prove how British they are by having the longest queue in the world... ever, volume 3, disc 2... Then, the ´plane is at gate 25, the very last, farthest gate in all of terminal 4. Nice. Ah well, hopefully soon we´ll be up, up and away! Wednesday 28th December On the way to Rio the ´plane stops to drop some people off in Sao Paulo. On [View Full Entry]

Oi. Am currently avoiding packing by doing anything else I can think of. Rio is great, I dont want to leave, hence I dont want to pack. As Bo said - the flight here was exciting. The minibus we booked to pick us up at 5am showed up half an hour late and we were scared we would miss out on more Lan Chile ham and cheese sandwich goodness. Luckily, we had plenty of time, and Lan Chile gave us the choice of sandwiches or omelletes. Brilliant. We got to our hostel by about 4pm and immediately left for a walk [View Full Entry]

So we left Argentina and Paraguay behind us and caught an overnight bus to Sao Paulo - largest city in South America and usually jostling for 4th/5th place in the biggest cities in the world rankings. Half way through the journey (just before 'lights out' one of the passengers came round and collected the equivalent of GBP4 from each person. We had no idea what it was for; nobody else on the bus spoke English and we did'nt know the Portuguese translation for "what's all this about then, pal?" Anyway, we paid up and could only assume what it was for.... [View Full Entry]

True to my word I got up at 10 the next day, blasting Amin awake with the fan pointed at his head. We re-grouped and actually made it to Ipanema by 11am! It was crowded at that time, and by the time we left there wasnt a free patch of sand anywhere. It was a brilliant day, not a cloud in the sky, and the sun beating down and frying us all to a crisp. Thousands of people go up and down the beach selling things, you cant go 5 seconds without someone coming up to you. But then there were [View Full Entry]

I got to the hostel, Mellow Yellow. Its pretty new but is already very popular just through word of mouth. Its right next to Copacabana beach, on 7 floors with loads and loads of dorms, one with 24 beds! It also comes complete with jacussi and bar, and chill out room. Its absolutely massive. I dumped my stuff and headed to the beach, had one of those reality check moments stepping onto the sand, as in ´oh my god, im on probably the most famous beach in the world´. It was so beautiful, with the hills surrounding, sugar loaf peeping through [View Full Entry]
