Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Banda Ipanema Drag Queens
There are many facets to Carnaval, it is not like Notting Hill Carnival where there is one procession down a determined route. Things are not organised in Brazil not even the time always makes sense. (Look out for later update.) The main parts are the Blocos and The Sambodrome Parade. There are many Blocos that parade around various parts of the city. The Blocos have a name and a theme such as Banda De Ipanema. Ipanema is a predominantly gay area so the Banda De Ipanema Bloco has a gay and transvestite theme. The Bloco consists of a few musicians playing [View Full Entry]

In Rio now after a long but surprisingly awesome bus ride. Although I could not understand the movies, they were constantly playing, and the company provided a few treats and water for the ride along with a blanket and head phones. Aside from the baby that decided to scream at 4am (I have no way to confirm because I donīt have a watch), it went by really quickly. The apartment that we have in Rio is on the 8th floor with three bedrooms and three bathrooms conveniently. The shower is the best shower that I have had on the trip so [View Full Entry]

Post 9- The Happening Spot
Post 9 is the best area on Ipanema beach with music, plenty of vendors, safety and beach parties at night.
Rio is that beautiful woman you saw in the distance and finally approached. She is most of what you dreamt of when you saw her but she’s lived through a sorted past and accepts the failings of a society most only catch a glimpse of. Ahhh, Rio......... Such as beautiful yet unsettling place at times. I feel like I have spent more than 11 days there because of all the different experiences I had there. I rented a flat there as well and the manager, Mariana, was a tremendous help the entire time. I stayed in Ipanema, the pristine beach area [View Full Entry]

Well, if I can start by trying to remember what day it actually is today I can count back to my last blog update and try to figure out what I did since then, but instead since I don't think I can actually do that, I'm just going to list all the highlights of Rio so far. Jacky came to visit me! As many of you know, she planned to come down here for Carnival and she did just that. It was quite the heartwarming reunion and we have had a lot of catching up to do. I actually arrived in [View Full Entry]

After the traumatic journey to Rio, with countless layovers and a slight losing of my way in Houston airport leading to passing through security twice... I finally arrived in Copacabana beach in Rio. The Mellow Yellow hostel is fantastic, 5 floors of fun (the stairs are a killer) with loads of great people. The first night had a pub quiz, which my team (all Brits, Katy, Rachel and Terry the hostel owner) did not do to well at, the highest score was less than 20 out of 40 though, followed by a search for a salsa club which ended quickly when [View Full Entry]

Rio
Unfortunetly, a cloudy day
We received our bags, and things started to improve. I decided to leave that apartment and spoiled myself with a 4 star hotel, and I even had a private Jacuzzi in my room! I think that it was my best experience until that moment. We also went to see the Corcobado, which is a statue of Jesus that oversees the entire city, and the view (although cloudy) was amazing from over there! I discovered that the language barrel is a serious one, as almost no one knows English or even Spanish in Brazil. The next day I was to fly to [View Full Entry]

The views from the top of the Corcovado were pretty good though.
So Brazil. Turns out the Spanish and the Portuguese dreamt up some line of longitude to separate their New World empires. Then they discovered Brazil. Or something like that. Long and short of that is they don't even bother speaking Spanish here. Well that's no bloody good, is it?! Anyways, four months of lazily travelling far too slowly meant so far I'd cut short my stay in Costa Rica from three weeks to two days, scrubbed around Panama altogether and put Cuba off until later. So far so good. Flying into Sao Paulo late January was a bit of a shock [View Full Entry]

Who's this cheeky fella, eh?
Nice picture, eh?
The Stones.

As we (especially Ran, my flight partner) wanted to 'lizrom' and make as little plans as possible, we did a reservation only for the first night. What we didnīt know, was that on the following day there was going to be a free concert by the Rolling Stones in Rio, so all the hostels / hotels / pausads were overbooked. After some time we finally managed to find a really lousy apartment, and the owner made us pay for 2 nights. We rented it with a couple of israeli girls, and Tom from England, who has been traveling for 2 years. [View Full Entry]

An intimate moment with my mochila
The start of my trip was really left footed. Why was it left footed, you ask? Well, for starters we had a really great flight: Our plane from Tel Aviv to Madrid was late by an hour, so we had 15 minutes to catch our connection to Rio De Janeiro. When we came running to the terminal, we discovered that our plane to Rio was going to be late by another one and a half hours. Then when we finally had landed in Rio, we went to take our baggage, but of course, it hadn't arrived. Apparently the Iberia people has [View Full Entry]
