Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Like the title says...words cannot possibly describe what Rio is like during Carnaval. At first, I didnīt think much of Rio...just as another city with a beach. The city is overwhelming with its contrasts and the people. The first thing that I did was meet up with Hassan at his place. Next day we got our keys and the whole gang met up. Oggie, John and Hassan are the partners in crime here. The next day we went to the travel agency to get ripped off like every freaking GRINGO should. When I talked to the locals, i found out that [View Full Entry]

Carnival!! South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro
Today is officially as far as I know based on all the religious stuff, the last day of Carnival, and also the last stat holiday here so Mukuda will finally stop complaining about his laundry woes. First off I want to apologize for the lack of Carnival pictures, Blair was our photographer because his camera is much smaller than mine and we actually have several CD's full of the various Carnival activities we have engaged in over the last several days. I have a few pics I will post but the good ones will have to wait until later. We did [View Full Entry]

Aaaahhhh.......... dunno whether weīre getting paranoid or wat? But we met with a little incident again today. We were walking along the familiar way to the subway station when a shabby looking black woman suddenly pounce onto OSM, trying to beg for money we guess. But in tt split second and us being very sensitive oredi, she hit her hand that was holding on to a bottle of vodka and the vodka was splashed all over her. Not knowing what to do, we screamed and ran, our faces turned white and limbs turned jelly. In fact, now that we think back, [View Full Entry]

Left Foz for the big drive up to Rio for Carnaval, via Curitiba and Bertioga, long truck days and torrential rain at one campsite... one slightly bizarre highlight was a stop at a petrol station where they had a set of drums in the corner and a kid of about 7 sat and played some excellent rhythms for us as we queued for the toilets! Definitely helped get us in the mood for Carnaval a bit..! Finally got to Paraty, which is a lovely town by the sea, all cobbled streets and colourful shops, restaurants and bars. We thought there were [View Full Entry]

Carnaval Friday: After living out of a bag for ten weeks we were as much looking forward to hanging up our clothes for 5 whole days as we were Carnaval. We were over the moon with our hotel with roof-top pool and bar one block from Ipanema beach. This was to be expected however as we had booked the hotel when we were both working and money had less value. What we spent on the hotel for 5 days accommodation alone is our current budget for 2 whole weeks total spend - but it turned out to be worth it. We [View Full Entry]

I took a flight from Salvador to Rio, as I was planning to see the winners parade there. I booked a hostel called King George, which is run by Israelies, and there were recomendations for it in the Lametayel site. I have no pictures of this hostel, but let me tell ya' that the conditions I had in 'Tironut' were better. There was no free room in other hostels for the next day, so I treated myself with a hotel, spent the next day searching for a hostel, and found a great one! It's called Che Lagarto, located in an Ipanema [View Full Entry]

OMG! They did it again!!!! Why us why us?!?! We were ready to board a bus (yes bus again) when 3 locals directed us to take the bus behind instead to get to the subway station. Thinking they were good samaritans, we took their advice and boarded the bus behind. OSM and I boarded first and CJ was sandwiched between those 3 fellows. We didnīt know why one of them took so long to buy the tix. It was actually one of them blocking the way, while the other one tried to use a pen to pry open the zip and [View Full Entry]

Hello all, just a quick entry today as thought i would upload my photos from iggassu falls and give you a bit of an update on Carnival. Have been recovering today as it has bee a mad couple of days. Travelled from Paraty to Rio on Friday and left the dragoman group as we were doing our own thing for carnival. So to say goodbye, had a few too many vodkas and went to the red and black ball which is to celebrate football fever-the big brazilian football team flamengo whos colours are black and red. Had an excellent night (no [View Full Entry]

The plane ride was long and a little stressed, one cause I couldnīt sleep on the plane and the other because once I got to Sao Paulo the airport was super crowded and I almost missed my flight to Rio. However, after surviving a talker on the plane, I made it to Rio and had a whole welcoming party came to greet me. That was great and made me feel at home. We went directly to the apartment I am staying at in Copacaban, literally 1 block from the beach! It has been in the upper 80s during the day and [View Full Entry]
