Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Hi friends and family! This is my first trip to South America and I have been here for about 5 days. One word can't describe it, but what comes to mind is Incredible! Where do I begin?! Flight was actaully fine considering that I had to take a zillion anti-nausea pills. The crew...Scott(Mr. brazil)...could not have survived without this guy...absolutely a must have kind of guy for such trips...a walking stud who is resourceful. "Crash" would not have been here because of him....LOVE the guy...Truly "a Brother from another mother". He loves the conference here..is actually learning stuff a [View Full Entry]

So it's been an eventful last few days. The last entry, I believe, was just before we went to the Parade of Champions, the winners of the formal Parading of the Samba Schools. To sum up, there are no words that come close to appropriately describing the event. (I seem to be saying that alot lately). We arrived at 2100hrs, to see the Sambadrome, the site of the event. This is a really long structure, made entirely of concrete. It was constructed by the famous Oscar Neimayer, the same architect who designed the city of Brasilia. To get an idea of [View Full Entry]

The Carnaval in Rio is a competition between 14 samba schools from all over Brazil, 10 of which are from Rio. It is much more commercialized than the carnaval in Salvador, but still amazing in many ways. The Carnaval takes place in the Sumbodromo, which is a huge stadium that was built especially for the Carnavals. Each school has something like 2,000 - 3,000 dancers. A school starts the preparation for the carnaval a year in advance: first it chooses a theme, than draws a competition to compose a song for it, and at last invents different customs and samba dances [View Full Entry]

Hello to all back on home turf! I am writing this from the lounge of our hotel, the “Intercontinental Rio” in the district of Sao Conrado in Rio de Janeiro. Out my window, I can see the beach with waves rolling in, and lots of locals running and swimming in the warm water. I just finished tanning by the poolside at the hotel, where we were entertained by a group of men playing “Pagode” music. For lunch I had a skewer of fish and I drank a couple ice cold Guarana Antarticas. We were interrupted briefly by the arrival of a [View Full Entry]

At sunset I went to the Sugar Loaf - a mountain that oversees Rio, and the view from there was great. It amended the clouded view I had a few days ago from Corcobado. Sugar Loaf & Corcobado are the 2 high points from which you can have the best view of the city. [View Full Entry]

Favelas are regions of big cities in Brazil, where the poorest population leaves, and considered the most dangerous places to be in. Local bands control the favela, and the police is usually afraid to enter a favela, and if it does enter it - only in big forces. My hostel organized a tour to one of the favelas in Rio, with a local guide. This is absolutely safe, as he has an agreement of protection with the locals, and the locals are interested for tourist to come in. I was at first concerned about it, but when I heard from everyone [View Full Entry]

by tim After six and a half weeks we finally arrived in Rio. Nine Dragoman/Encounter trucks carrying 120 people had descended from all over South America on the Hotel Paysandu. Our first night there was the Red and Black ball. This we had been pre-warned was an event which saw several thousand people dressed in Red and Black converge on a nightclub called the Scala club. The point of it was fairly obscure apart from the fact that the woman generally got mauled by the local bloke's. I was'nt really looking forward to it but it was just one of those [View Full Entry]

I went at evening to a football game in the Maracana stadium. It's one of the biggest football stadiums in the world. When it was first built, it contained 200,000 places, but there was a problem with it's foundation so they added chairs, which lowered it's capacity by half. Unfortunately the stadium goes threw a renovation, so the lower floor is closed and the stadium contains only 55,000 seats now. The game we went to was a minor one - it was in the middle of the week, Flamengo is one of the best teams in Brazil and Madureira team is [View Full Entry]
