Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

The past few days have mostly been spent on the beach, sleeping and watching football. This place lives and breaths the game!! There is football on the beach, the streets and every bar you walk past has a game on. No wonder they are bloody good! Last night we went to the Maracanã Stadium to watch Fluminense vs Goais. The atmosphere was brilliant!! Massive flags, flares, drums, the lot! The home team won from a penalty taken the end we were sitting in which was great!! We have a very happy Graham today as we managed to find an English bar [View Full Entry]

Well, I´ve arrived safe and sound in Rio. It´s 7.20am, it´s 20C, the sun is shining and it´s the start of the weekend! I´ve just been dropped off at the house I´ll be staying in for the next 7 weeks and it´s very nice. Rooftop terrace with jacuzzi, views of Corcovado, Sugar Loaf and the bay. It doesn´t get much better - unless I was sitting here with a beer but it´s a little early, even for me. I´m sure I´ll be getting my pasty skin down to the beach later on and tomorrow I´m off to the football at Maracana [View Full Entry]

...... until yesterday anyway ;-) We arrived in the rain and at first glance the airport looked like Heathrow, we thought we had gone full circle!! After fighting our way through the taxi touts we got a bus to Copocabana giving us a good look at the City straight away (it took over an hour as it was rush hour). Rio certainly is 'the city of contrast'. The first thing we notice is Rio is BUSY, always so much going on, its fun! With the beautiful surroundings and diversity between rich and poor in the city our photos won't do it [View Full Entry]

My boogers are still black from that train ride two days ago. Lord knows what my lungs look like. My hands, well, I was finally able to wash them clean once we got back to Rio this afternoon. Previous to that... We checked out of our crappy hotel on the outskirts of town yesterday morning so we could check into a crappy hotel in the thick of the pure awfullery of Vitoria. Our room was tiny, lightless, and already occupied by a twelve-pound cockroach named Thiago. Thiago showed us around a bit - the bathroom, where the light switches were, how [View Full Entry]

I've made it to BRAZIL!!!..... After a sad departure from London I made it into Rio de Janeiro and to a hostel by the name of Stone of a Beach, located a couple streets back from Copacabana. I had a few days to settle into the land of sunshine and skimpy bottomed bathing suits before being joined by a fellow seasoned traveller by the name of Owen. I met Owen about 7 months ago at the Okay guesthouse in Phnom Penh and then again for the celebrations that the Full Moon Party (where he initally made an appearance on the blogsite) [View Full Entry]

i think it's about time to talk about teresa. see...kyle and i signed up at this website called global freeloaders. basically, this webiste has a database of people willing to offer a couch or a bed for travelers, and in exchange, you sign up to do the same. it's a pretty awesome way to meet people of that country. this is how we found teresa. in our first email exchange, teresa informed me that she was hesitant to host us because she had hosted some smelly rude americans in the past. i assured her we smelled good. then she said (upon [View Full Entry]

We discovered the bonde station closed upon our arrival. Bewildering! Later we would learn that the conductors of the trolley to Santa Teresa were on strike. But today, just outside the locked gate, sat we and a small handful of equally bewildered tourists. One woman was crying. She was German, which I could tell both from my innate sense of heritage and from the accent in her weeps. I thought, It is only a trolley, lady. As it turns out, she and her husband had been robbed at knifepoint, in broad daylight, mere moments earlier and mere meters nearby. That the [View Full Entry]

Missed Photo Opportunity #2

heh, i mean...today really is march 31st! i know nothing of the april days 1-5. anyway. so...ahem...*today* was much better than yesterday. i crammed a bunch of portuguese last night and just decided to suck it up and act like an assface if i had to. after all, everyone expects americans to be assfaces! anyway...in one of the more bizarre coincidences, kyle's uncle just happened to be in rio today. and after a little confusion about the buses and taxis, (most things are confusing when you have a working portuguese vocabulary of about 15 words, all pronounced wrong) we met him [View Full Entry]

English With “only” six hours of bus we could reach from São Paolo one of the best attraction we were dreaming of during our trip. However, it took us two days to leave the comfortable Toninelli’s house and the Parmigiano… Rio is called the cidade meravilhosa by the Brazilians for some more than justified reasons. In this city nature and civilization combine together in a dramatic and harmonious setting. Rio is made of contrasts: astonishing beaches and mountains of unusual shape, tropical forests and horrible concrete buildings, luxurious neighborhoods and [View Full Entry]
