Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Itīs the start of my 4th week - I still canīt believe Iīve only been here for 3 weeks. My Portuguese is improving but I still understand more than I can speak which is a bit frustrating. However, I can get the odd sentence out that makes sense! My teaching week was pretty quiet (apart from a visit from the police and their rifles on Thursday). It was Motherīs Day here on Sunday so all the kids made cards and I translated their soppy messages into English. All the tough boys are just big softies at heart - it was really [View Full Entry]

For some reason I seem to have made an arse of my typing up my first week. The pictures are back to front and I typed a whole load more and Iīve no idea what happened to it. I canīt remember what I had typed either! Anyway, to continue................. Iīm working in a favela called Prazeres. Itīs only a 10 minute walk from the house so itīs pretty good. My first day of teaching was ok. I had two girls fighting and rolling around on the floor with handfulls of each otherīs hair. We also had the police come calling which [View Full Entry]

Here I am again trying to remember what I did last week. Monday was a holiday so there was no school. Tuesday, the guy that runs my project decided to change the timetable and put the kids into 4 different groups. It should work out that I have 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon throughout the week. However, none of them seem to stick to their groups and I end up with some coming to class both morning and afternoon. It doesnīt help with my lesson planning. Anyway, Tuesday I had a class in the morning which was [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Rio 9am local time after a gruelling 13 hour flight from Heathrow via Sao Paulo. As soon as weīd dropped our bags at the hostel, we headed down town for our first taste of the world famous Copacabana beach. After a stroll down the 3km of golden sands, it was time to relax at a beach side cafe serving the ultimate refreshment, a near ripe coconut straight from the freezer, top hacked off with a machette and a straw to lap up the chilled milk inside. Heaven on a hot (31 degrees!) day. Although we were shattered from [View Full Entry]

Our final destination in South America then. We had decided to stay in Ipanema, a beach neighbourhood of Rio, which is the next beach along from Copacabana. Rio was expensive, in fact, our hotel was the most expensive of the whole trip, so the night we arrived we stayed at a budget place and then moved into our place a couple of blocks away overlooking the beach the next morning. Maybe we have been travelling too long, but we saved a few quid this way. We headed down to Ipanema beach that afternoon and chilled out. The beach was lovely with [View Full Entry]

I canīt belive Iīve only been here a week, it feels like ages. The most important thing is the weather is great - hot and sunny every day. Have managed not to get burnt so far but I guess thereīs plenty of time for that. Eventually started work at my placement this week. Monday was orientation day but the guy that runs my project wasnīt there so he was going to pick me up on Tuesday at 9am. Being on Brazil time this eventually changed to 11am, 1pm and then 3pm. Needless to say he didnīt turn up at 3 either! [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Rio safely, to be greeted by rain, arrrgghh! It wasn't the best of starts as we got rail roaded into taking a taxi from the airport (the bus station was supposed to be 'not too safe' in Rio) and we were still jet lagged. As we drove through the streets we tried to explain to the driver in our limited Portuguese (one phrase book) that we wanted to go to a street and then find a hostel from there. He couldnīt understand that we didn't have a reservation. After arriving in the street we wanted we paid and got [View Full Entry]

Glorious weather in Rio!?!
So made it to the airport and caught the plane to Rio De Janeiro, Arrived Monday 17th April and caught an extortionately priced radio cab to Ipanema.... Gary lost his wallet in the taxi and we got caught in a monsoon looking for a hostel..... Not the best of starts!! After 24 hours of rain things did improve.... Tuesday took the cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain, but unfortunately it was overcast..... Wednesday went to Corcovado to see JC and took the cog train up the mountain.... definately the best views in Rio and timing was excellent as the cloud broke [View Full Entry]
