Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Well, here I am back in Rio - 4 days ahead of schedule!! Salvador was definitely not my kind of place. Too many tourists, too much hassle - just too much in general..... We spent our second day there on the beach. We thought it would be good to get out of town and get a bit of peace and quiet. No such luck! I made the error of sitting up on my chair to buy a drink - big mistake. Some bloke ended up with my foot in his hands trying to give me a massage and would not take [View Full Entry]

Thanks to Ryan, an american guy who rented our spare room for a few days, we finally did some sightseeing. Went downtown to check out the huge and strange looking Metrolpolitan Church before catching the old (and a bit scary) mountain trolly up to Santa Teresa. Santa Teresa is a small town up on the mountain just 15 minutes from down town Rio. According to legend it started out as a refuge for escaped slaves back in the days when Rio was the main slave port of South America and later people moved here to escape a yellow fever epedemic. Have been in Rio a few days now and its like a holiday from our holiday. Staying in a nice apartment in Ipanema which by total fluke is only two blocks from the gay beach...need to work on my tan before I go there though. Weather is nice and warm and we have spent most of our time on the beach so far. Hopefully we will get motivated to see some of the sights eventually... Congrats on the job Eva! [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Rio on April 9th pretty late and, getting a bus because the airport taxis were very overpriced, it seemed really exciting, a new country, a new language, arriving in the middle of the night. We’d booked ourselves a nice hotel online. $100 for the room was well over budget but nice for the first few days in a place like Rio, and only a block from the famous Copacabana beach. For the next three days we walked around the beachside neighbourhood, sitting on the beach in the day, and checking out the stalls selling gear to tourists and [View Full Entry]

Not much to report. Been living pretty quietly the past few weeks and this is my last week of teaching. Bingo has been going well................ Was invited to the theatre last Friday with the kids. They were really excited and were all washed and dressed in their best clothes ready to go. However, the bus didn´t turn up and we didn´t get there. They were all gutted. I felt really sorry for them especially Alan as it was his birthday. They were all really sweet though. As we were walking down for the bus they were fighting over who was going [View Full Entry]
