Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Well, I had my leaving party with the kids yesterday. Tears were shed (not just mine) and it was very sad. Trying to explain that I had to go back to work was a little difficult as they figured that I should just stay with them as they didn´t want me to go home. I got a lot of messages written in my book and they´re all really touching - in fact, every time I read them it makes me want to cry again! I´ve promised to visit next year - so I guess I´ll need to start saving now. There´s [View Full Entry]

After a 12 hour flight from Heathrow sitting next to the smelliest guy on the plane, Gurth and I eventually arrived in Rio heading for the Copacabana Mellow Yellow Hostel where we had planned to meet our friends Matt, Wash and Sam. We arrived about 8:30am and woke up the boys, the confused look on Washy's face said it all. Once the boys were up we headed straight down to the Copacabana beach, 4.5km stretch of sand and sea. It wasn't long before the Popcorn Filled Chimney Sweeps AFC 5-a-side team were in action playing against 4 other lads from our [View Full Entry]

Cariocas Arrived in Rio after a rather long flight, i think it was 14 hours including the stop off in Sao Paulo, which luckily we didnt have to leave the plane for. We also had the good fortune to be upgraded on the flight to ´world traveller plus´ which afforded us an extra 7 inches of leg room, which doesnt sound much, but when you are attempting to sleep for as much of it as possible its very much a welcome addition. After leaving the plane experienced our first ripping off of the trip in the shape of an over charged [View Full Entry]

Our journey to Rio was a little delayed as we were scheduled to depart at 4:50pm, the only problem was the Brazil - Germany match kicked off at 4:00pm, the result, our plane was delayed until half time. The agony on the Brazilian fans faces as they boarded the plane without being able to watch the 2nd half was priceless.........not as funny as their faces when we arrived in Rio to a 1-0 defeat - Ooooooooops! We must admit, prior to boarding we both looked at purchasing Brazil jerseys, and I indeed was able to find one - not much use [View Full Entry]

So England were out, it was raining and due to our predictable laziness the bus we wanted to get to Rio was sold out, not a great start to our final day in Salvador. Anyway after booking a later bus we split up to contemplate the loss and basically potter about. The night before we had met some French girls and boys and after meeting them after Englands demise i thought the best way to avoid the dwelling of the defeat was to get involved in the next game. After returning to the square where we watched the prior Brazil game [View Full Entry]

We’ve arrived at our first destination - Rio de Janeiro and have been staying in a small guest house called ´chez Michel´run by, you guessed it, a French guy called Michel! It´s very laid back and friendly. Just the kind of place we need to get ourselves sorted out before we get started on the bikes. The culture shock arriving in Rio was nothing compared to our last trip when we arrived in Madras and nearly took the next plane home in a state of shock. Walking around Rio you could imagine being in a kind of European city really, obviously [View Full Entry]

Today was habibi's birthday and we went with a friend of ours to a dance party called B.I.T.C.H which is on every three months or so. It used to be at an amusement park until some queen fell out of the rollercoaster so now it is at some kind of pool/spa complex by the lagoon. The venue wasn't great but the music and atmosphere was good. It's true what they say though 'Rio is all about the day...and Sao Paulo is all about the night'. The parties and clubs here are nowhere as good as in Sao Paulo....but then again the [View Full Entry]

Sorry it’s been so long since my last blog, am sure everyone is waiting in anticipation for the next exciting instalment! We have been in South America for about 5 weeks now and having incredible time! Sen and I were really sad to leave New Zealand and team consumption, especially the Great Danes (missing you both loads!!!), not so bothered about Simon and old WHJ (for those of you who don’t know WHJ stands for Wandering hands Jackson - I feel Phil’s new nickname needs no more explanation than that!) since they were following us to Chile a few days later.
