Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

So, we“ve finally arrived! I^m writing this on a strange brazilian keyboard so i apologise for any weird punctuation that may occur. Our flight in wasn~t too bad, we got the seats with extra leg room for the long haul flight, having almost not got on because they couldn~t print my boarding pass for the leg from lisbon to rio. Oh, and just to make things nice and easy we arrived in Rio to sweltering heat but our bags did not. we still don~t have them. fantastic. Hopefully they will arrive soon enough, but who knows. Mellow Yellow seems nice enough. [View Full Entry]

Friday night consisted of chilling in the hostel bar drinking giant beers for $2 along with tonnes of water attempting to rehydrate myself. Then I crashed at about 10:30 finally and slept amazing throughout the night until 8:30 on Saturday. I got up and has some of the hostel breakfast (toast, watermelon, pineapple, ham, and some unidentifiable items) with Heidi from Australia then headed down the street and bought the custest green dress along with some water. Then I started recruiting for a trip to the zoo, I sucessfully found Charlotte, a 19 year old Aussie who has been in Brazil [View Full Entry]

After my nine hour flight from Atlanta I landed at Galećo International Airport a little before 10:00 A.M. It was a warm and humid day in Rio. The middle of summer here in the southern hemisphere. The tour guide from Princess Cruises was there to greet me right on time after I had cleared customs. I was taking a 5 day pre-cruise land tour starting here in Rio de Janeiro. There were several of us coming in on this flight, but our group would have 90 people in total. It wasn't exactly a scenic drive to the hotel from the airport [View Full Entry]

So, I am spending 4 months in Brazil - about 2.5 in Rio, learning Portuguese and volunteering in the Rocinha favela, and 1.5 months traveling up the coast to the Northeast. I’m living with 3 Brazilian girls in their early/mid 20s in Apoador, the area between Ipanema and Copacabana. I thought I’d try to get back into diary/blog mode and jot down some of my initial observations and experiences. Language School: I’ve been taking language classes every day for four hours in the morning. The school is in the business district which is a bit of a hike, but a nice [View Full Entry]

We finally made it to Brazil leaving the snow of England behind us for the hot humid 30 degree climate of Rio. It was an epic journey which saw us wait over 2 and a half hours to check in our bags even after checking in online. Getting more nervous as we stood in the never moving line as the time drew nearer to the scheduled departing time of our flight, which left us legging it to passport control only to find out our flight has been delayed, something they couldn“t tell us before security. Finally boarding 5 hrs late we [View Full Entry]

We got home last night so I'm writing this last blog from the chilly UK - a bit of a shock to the system coming from 35 degrees in Rio to freezing temperatures here! Our last blog left us in Sao Paulo where we spent one day and one night - unfortunately that one day was a Sunday so the centre of town was pretty dead (the only other people on the streets were the homeless and the preachers) and all the nice shops in the posh area we were staying in (Jardins) were closed. I'm sure Sao Paulo has a [View Full Entry]

I made it. I still have yet to sleep since the night before I flew out, but who needs sleep, right? After Robbie seeing me off at the airport I became nervous, excited, sad and too many other emotions to put into words. I zipped over to security and wandered over to my gate like an old pro, I can handle the size of the Victoria airport (by the way I feel I represented the west coast well by wearing socks and berkinstocks on the plane, best comfy/warm combo ever!) After the packed flight over to Seattle I grew nervous after [View Full Entry]

To say that I LOVE Rio is an understatement and I know it“s a massive call but after all my travels throughout the world I can easily say that Rio (in my opinion) is the best city on the planet. I always thought New York was the best but this place absolutely kicks over NYC. It“s spectacular, beautiful, alive, friendly, sexy, exciting, exotic, dangerous and absolutely fabulous. Even Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were staying a few doors down from me this week. I think my hostel was full so they had to go to the Copacabana Palace hotel instead. Everything [View Full Entry]

The first entry in my "Lighting Trip" series...more to come. The format will typically be brief, just like the trip itself which likely won't span more than 48 hours on the ground in a given destination. Rio Lightning: 10 hour flight courtesy of United Airlines direct from Dulles. The flight leaves late on Friday and doesn't return until Sunday late night...allowing 36 hours on the ground. Copacabana and Ipanema are THE places to see and be seen in the city, the beaches and people are strikingly beautiful and welcoming. Best local drink, caipirinhas. (crushed lime slices, sugar a [View Full Entry]

Okay, this tour i wasnt so sure about. Prancing around with cameras taking pictures of people less fortunate didnt really appeal to me. It seemed to be some sort of human safari, taking pictures of locals in their natural habitat. We met 2 English lads who did the tour the previous day and highly recommened it. If it wasnt for this recommendation, i dont think i would have gone on the tour. The tour was of Rocinha favela, one of the biggest favelas in Rio de Janerio. The word Rocinha literally translates to small ranch, which gives you an indication of [View Full Entry]
