Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Ola! A quick update: Almost didn't make it to Heathrow as my Mum's car decided to overheat. But that didn't stop us from getting there and making our way to the BA bag drop desk in good time. The BA lady was really nice and looked very happy whilst telling us we had been upgraded.....to Economy plus. She seemed surprised by our lack of enthusiasm to this. My response was "is there space in Business?" she told us there was but there was no chance of us being upgraded twice. We then headed for the shops - Terminal 5 has soooooooo [View Full Entry]

Confeitaria Colombo
Confeitaria Colombo
A wonderful cafe - built in 1894.
South America Cruise #5~ Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: On this port day Larry had to work a lot, however, we were still able to wander off the ship for a little while in the morning. Shortly after, we stumbled upon a little market where we bought Havianas (Brazilian flip-flops) for some family members back home. When Larry had to get back on the ship, I thought I would show Nicole the café that we went to last time, Colombo Confeitaria. We had a lovely lunch there and then did a little shopping before heading back onboard. Buenos Aires, Argentina - Day [View Full Entry]

What is the first thing you should do after arriving in Rio after a sleepless 24 hour bus journey? Yeah, that’s right; head down to Ipanema beach for a few beers in a pre carnival parade and then go to a samba school until 4 in the morning. We flung ourselves into Rio and it didn’t really stop for the next 5 days. It didn’t really start too well. We got there mid afternoon after spending 24 hours on the hottest bus ever (the only way to deal with it was not to move - seriously!), to find that the hostel [View Full Entry]

Ushuia from above
Ushuia from above
The world's southernmost city from about 3000ft up in a VW with wings.
After travelling alone for a few weeks we arrived in Ushuia, the southernmost city in the world (big country town really) to rejoin Carmen and the other truck passengers. We grabbed a few extra days in non-tent accomodation though, which was a double bonus as after the countries we have been in we found Argentina quite expensive and elected to forgo the many resteraunts in town and cook in out our little kitchenette! It was here we said goodbye to Nancy as she was lucky enough to secure a berth on her preferred ship to Antartica at a good saving. After [View Full Entry]

So, we´ve finally arrived! I^m writing this on a strange brazilian keyboard so i apologise for any weird punctuation that may occur. Our flight in wasn~t too bad, we got the seats with extra leg room for the long haul flight, having almost not got on because they couldn~t print my boarding pass for the leg from lisbon to rio. Oh, and just to make things nice and easy we arrived in Rio to sweltering heat but our bags did not. we still don~t have them. fantastic. Hopefully they will arrive soon enough, but who knows. Mellow Yellow seems nice enough. [View Full Entry]

On Tuesday morning we started an eight hour tour of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with our tour director, Zeca. Zeca was from Rio and would be with us all five days and did an outstanding job. Our first stop was at Corcovado where we rode the train to the top of the mountain. Atop the mountain stands the inspiring Christ the Redeemer statue. Unfortunately visability on top of the mountain was very poor and we did not get to see much of the famous view. It was nice a sunny on top but there were clouds below us [View Full Entry]
