Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Hi all, Here is an entry to say that im here safely after a very long and draining plane ride. I eventually got to Rio where i was met by a driver called Claudio who is notorious around Rio for having the craziest cab interior! Everything was yellow and brightly coloured and it even had gameboys in te back to amuse yourselves! He also had Elton John blaring loudly which comforted me strangely! I then met up with Judi, the lady im staying with who is amazing! At this point I had been awake for about 24 hours and was feeling [View Full Entry]

Today, I left for Rio de Janerio, excited, tired and ready for the best time of my life. After staying in the Yo hotel in Heathrow, which was pretty crazy, I embarked on a 12 hour flights, only to be accompanied by a charming Great British Athlete, so the flight was quite interesting!! Tom meet me in the airport we waited for Eanna and Fiona to arrive and we all headed to our hostel walk on the beach in Copacabana. We meet Nadav(Israel) and Sharon(Holland) and Ryan(Belfast) and all went into Lapa till the small hours to check out some Samba [View Full Entry]

Continuing our travels in South America, our next stop was Sao Paulo, Brazil. This city has the 5th largest population in the world (Brazil is the 5th largest country). One night spent in this huge metropolis was enough. Our memory of Sao Paulo will be of having the best meal of the trip so far - shrimp, the size of lobster prepared for us table side. The following morning we hired a driver. He was supposed to speak English. No English but a real sweet guy! The plan was to drive from Sao Paulo to Parati so we could view the [View Full Entry]

Rio....football, samba, beaches, crime, pollution, beauty, traffic jams, poverty, wealth: it's Buenos Aires on crack, New York in a bikini, Vancouver on speed, Istanbul on illi. All superlatives apply. I went to a football game in the world's largest stadium, able to hold 200 000 people, to watch Botafogo and Flamengo battle it out to a draw. I hung out on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches where bikinis and silicone rule, where buff guys swagger and pose. I went to pre-Carnaval beach parties where everyone wandered along the street drinking beer as girls and boys kissed passionately, th [View Full Entry]

Me 'n Rio

Shopping in Leblon was cool - sort of like an upmarket shopping mall at home. But everything was far too expensive. We sampled our first “Bob’s” burger for lunch (pretty much the same as BK) - even that was expensive at R$19 (about £6)! We went to the cinema to see Duvida (some Meryl Streep film about a priest - it's called Doubt in English) I liked it but I think Clare thought it was pretty boring. But it gave us something to do to avoid the rain. Clare had fallen asleep by 11pm and although I was tired I didn’t [View Full Entry]

now then. so, im still alive and so far have managed to avoid malaria, typhoid and that fish that swims up your willy. before i start, have this song playing in the background as you read this, cos was in my head the whole time i was in rio! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKsVhyiISY8&feature=related arrived in brazil nearly 2 weeks ago now and spent the first few days in rio de janeiro. rio is possibly the most fun and exciting city ive ever been to. however, first impressions were a little sketchy, accidently finding myself in the gay section of ipanema beach. that was exciting! It's still raining.....after lunch we tried to find something to do (Rio is quite a boring place when the sun isn't shining believe it or not). We contemplated shopping but then it started pissing it down (again) so we stayed in our dorm (how cool are we?! lol). Most of the guys at the hostel seemed to be going to a street party in Lapa (a dodgy area near a notorious favela) and then on to a Samba club. We drank caiprihana’s at the hostel bar and got chatting to a few people (or rather, a few models - well ok, [View Full Entry]
