Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

My god Iguazo Falls defid the imagination wth heat and humidity. Must have been close to 100% with temps around the mid 30´s. It was exhausting just getting up! We spent 2 nights there and was a nice town, small and easy to get around. The falls were magnificent, we took a train round the park, a boat ride doen the river and then the jet boat into the falls. I did take photos while we were in the falls but to be honest even I´m having difficulty working out what they are of! Cant download any phtos as there are [View Full Entry]

Day 691 (18.02.09) Why is it that when you need a bus to arrive on time it rarely does? On the way to Rio from Florianopolis we had to change buses in Sao Paulo and when we booked the tickets we were due to arrive at 7.30am giving us plenty of time for the transfer. However, after a big struggle though the craziness of Sao Paulo rush hour, we finally pulled into the bus station at around 8.55am. This left us with approximately 5 minutes before our bus to Rio was to leave. "Oh well" we thought, buses from the same [View Full Entry]

So we are in a taxi on the way to get our Brazil entry stamps and the taxi driver went down a street, slammed on his breaks, hurriedly reversed and went down a different street. He goes police and flashbacks of Peru came back to me and I thought not again, but we got there without further problems. The immigration guy went to stamp on my observations page and I said, kinda loudly cos it panicked me, NO and he looked at me and I said not that page. So he flipped though my passport looking for a blank page and [View Full Entry]

Today a few of us headed for the famous statue, Christo Redentor. This was spectular and a sight I never imagined that I would be lucky enough to see ; ) Tom, Fiona, Eanna, Ryan and myself all headed up Corocova. With crystal blue skies we had an amazing view of the spectacular city. That evening we went for a Buffet dinner with traditional Brazilan food. We headed into some street parties in Lapa which left us slightly drunk after all the Caperinihas ; ) [View Full Entry]

As soon as we got into Rio, Boucs and I went straight to Carretao Churrascarria in Ipanema. We were later joined by our good friend Adriana, who took us into Lapa for some parting. We absolutely loved Rio. Ipanema beach is probably the best beach there, however its very wavy and Copacapan is even worse for waves. Absoultely loved all the different fruits and acai, fresh fruit juices, coconuts on the beach, little meat skewers, cheese skewers in fact pretty much all the street food was amazing. We accomplished quite a bit in Rio. Saw a few blocos as it was [View Full Entry]
