Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Well Rio was a bit of a flying visit just two days and nights. Upon arrival from Isle Grande there was a great atmosphere and vibe around the place. Everybody in Brazil lives for Carnival, it's bigger than Christmas here, so it was all Carnival talk non stop. Buses, in the street, taxi's everywhere all you heard was Carnival, Carnival, Carnival. Strange then you might think...Why did we only stay two days and then leave the day before Carnival starts. Well because we had an apartment lined up for another city three hours away that supposedly is more the 'real carnival' [View Full Entry]

Day 693 (20.02.09) Carnaval, billed as the biggest party in the world, occurs at the same time all across Brazil with Rio being the most famous place to fiesta. Today was the official start to the proceedings and we decided we needed some colourful and crazy things to wear. With Drew, Nick and Mark from our dorm we got the metro out to Centro and the area outside Uruguiana station which we'd heard was great for the sort of thing we required. It turned out to perfect as we joined throngs of others gearing up for carnaval. The market and surrounding [View Full Entry]

Day 694 (21.02.09) Wanting to experience one of South Americas biggest passions, we joined a group from our hostel and our norwegian mates hostel to go out to the Maracana stadium (once famed to have the biggest capacity of any stadium in the world when it was all standing) to watch Flamengo play. As we arrived at the stadium we joined the steady flow of the crowd and stopped for a quick piccie at the sign announcing that the stadium will be used for the 2014 world cup final. We found some seats in and amongst the most passionate fans we [View Full Entry]

Day 695 (22.02.09) Today was the day for us to experience all the colour, grandeur and true spectacle of the Carnaval in Rio as we had tickets to the main parade in the Sambadromo. But before we could make it out for the start at 9pm, we still had to drag ourselves out of bed following our previous Carnaval celebrations. Making it up for a spot of brekkie before falling back into bed for a couple of hours we eventually made it outside for a trip to the hippy market in Ipanema where amongst the local artists dsiplaying their work we [View Full Entry]

HereŽs some pictures Ive taken recently...some are from the other night in the Sambodromo parade. I was lucky to dance in the parade as my hosts here happened to be doing it, and invited me along. Its not all that uncommon for a tourist to do it...but I probably wouldnt have if I wasnt invited. And it was such a blast! Basically there are local Samba Schools from most neighboorhoods in Rio, and the parade is a competition with its own sort of stadium. The neighboorhood that my hosts, Rod, Luiz and Andrea, and myself danced with was Rocinha (Ho-see-nya). Its [View Full Entry]

Day 2 So after am pretty much uninterrupted nights sleep we both wake up at 7.30. After making our way downstairs and chilling in the lounge for while the cook brings out an assortment of brekkie, ham, cheese, fresh rolls, coffee, cake and some very odd tasting fruit juice! It finally gets to around 9am and we decide to hit the beach early. We leave the hostel and start walking... Everything is closed with shutters down. This seems a bit odd being carnival and everything? So we get to Botafogo beach and start walking over the beach, as i approach the [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone - We are alive in Rio, and just learned that weŽll get a taste of Carnaval this Friday so we are very excited. The beaches are gorgeous and the people very nice, though we are surprised that the people know more English than they do Spanish, and even the English speakers are few and far between. We spent last night in Copacabana and ate at a Churrascaria that we stumbled upon while looking for an ATM - yes I (Holly) even had a taste of the red meat from DanŽs plate, though I stuck to chicken, pork, and side [View Full Entry]
